Remix This Brit Kit for a Thoughtful DIY Mother’s Day Gift
Nothing beats a homemade gift, but tackling a DIY project with the expectation of gifting it away can be a wee bit overwhelming. Nevertheless, what they say about the “thought that counts” is definitely true, and you should start a tradition of DIY Mother’s Day gifts (even when you’re genuinely considering resorting to macaroni art as an adult…) this year. We’ll show you three different ways to remix our Marbled Jewelry Tray Kit for Mother’s Day. Plus, these trays are all so easy to make that it’s impossible to mess up. So put that macaroni and glue away and let’s dive right into some serious DIY (JK, macaroni art is the grandaddy of crafts and should not be ridiculed).
There’s a design for every flavor of mom out there.

This is a classic jewelry dish that any mom will love.
I <3 MOM
Soften about half of a block of Sculpey in your hands and roll it into a two-inch diameter ball.
To start forming the tray, press your thumbs into the center of the ball and work your way around the edges. Continue pressing until you have a bowl about four inches in diameter.
Make a heart out of the white Sculpey and press it into place onto the bowl. Bake the Sculpey at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
Allow the clay to cool off before adding your gold pen detail.
If your mom is the preppy type, this “Stuff” catchall is the perfect gift for her. Switch up the text to a funny soap pun and gift this with a bar from her favorite soap shop.
STUFF
Roll white Sculpey out to 1/8 inch thickness and cut out an 8 x 4-inch rectangle.
Pinch and squeeze the corner in to create a creased effect. Gently pinch along the base of the dish to create a rectangular footprint. Bake the Sculpey at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
Allow the clay to cool off before adding your gold pen detail.
Maybe your mom is more of a hip, modern mom. This speckled triangular tray may be more her style.
SPECKLED TRIANGLE
Work the pink Sculpey into a ball and flatten it slightly. Tear small pieces of the white Sculpey and arrange them on top of the pink Sculpey. The more randomly scattered the pieces are, the more beautiful the speckling will be! Roll the Sculpey out to about 1/8-inch thickness.
We chose to cut a rough triangle out of the clay. Don’t worry about cutting out a perfect one! The irregular shapes add to the charm of these dishes.
Roll the white Sculpey into a rod about 1/4 inch in diameter. Flatten the rod with a rolling pin, and then align the newly rolled-out panel along the edge of your triangle to make the sides of your tray. Once the sides of the tray are in place, gently pinch along the edges of the tray to combine the two pieces of clay together. Bake the Sculpey at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes.
To make the gold splatter marks, press the nib of the paint pen down until the ink begins pooling, then lift the pen up. Gently blow on the pool of ink to create a more dramatic splatter effect.
A place for everything and everything in its place.
