WTF: Washing Your Hair With *This* Is the Newest Beauty Trend from Japan

Our quest for beauty has led us to many far-flung places. We’ve spent a lot of time trying to age (and dress) like Parisian women and shop up Korean beauty products any chance we get — sheet masks, BB, CC and DD creams = beauty musts. The latest beauty craze has us turning our attention to Japan to add some life to our limp strands using “hair water.” Wait, what? Yup, you read that right. Hair water.

Well, “hair water” is a bit of a misnomer. The water used is actually rice water, which contains protein (as well as other vitamins, minerals and antioxidants) and helps repair hair and make it shinier. While this beauty secret is new to us, it’s not so new in Japan, where it’s been used since 2800 BCE under the name Yu-Su-Ru.

How do we tap into this beauty treatment and get the enviable healthy, glossy hair we might after a visit to a salon in Japan? You can buy rice water on Etsy — like this Rice Water Hair Milk ($23) from Ash & Nectar — or you can go the DIY route, and make it yourself.

Here’s how to DIY your way to gorgeous tresses: Cook the rice as you usually do, but add a bit more water than normal. When the rice is cooked, drain the water (not into the sink — save it!), let it cool and voilà! You now have rice water. Wash your hair and rinse thoroughly, then apply the rice water to your hair and let it sit for two to three minutes and rinse well.
