All Your Favorite Celebs Just Went Makeup-Free for This Legendary Calendar
If you’re not yet familiar with the annual Pirelli calendar, it’s time to get acquainted. The iconic Italian motorsport’s calendar has been around since 1963. It’s notoriously hard to get your hands on, as it’s reserved only for VIP clients. And until last year, it was famous for featuring mostly nude shots of supermodels.
The release of the 2016 calendar took a different turn, thanks to famed photog Annie Leibovitz. She chose to feature not just supermodels, but a variety of inspirational women like Serena Williams and Tavi Gevinson. It was an artful nude of Amy Schumer that caused the most commotion last year.
For the 2017 edition, the brand went with a new photographer but took a similar girl power kind of stance. This year’s calendar was shot by Peter Lindbergh, for his third edition of the annual project. The theme for 2017: no makeup. Lindbergh recruited some of Hollywood’s finest actresses and stripped them of their normal cosmetic enhancements.
Included in the pages of this year’s calendar are actresses Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Lea Seydoux, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright and Zhang Ziyi.
All the photos are striking portraits in black and white, as is standard of the iconic photographer’s style. The theme for 2017 is “Emotional,” which feels fitting as we attempt to push past the tumultuous year that is 2016.
The photographs are a refreshing break from the over-edited photos that we’re faced with on the daily, but folks have been quick to point out Pirelli failed to include something many other fashion faves have finally embraced this year: curves. Nowhere in the cal is a plus-size woman. Is it just us, or would someone like Ashley Graham, Gabourey Sidibe or Rebel Wilson have made for a welcome addition to this project? Here’s to hoping 2018 brings us just as much natural beauty but with some added body positive flair.
