4 Movies for Everyone Super Stoked About Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast drops tomorrow (or today if you’re a superfan and headed to an early release)! If your life leading up to the release has been all things BATB-themed, like tea sets and backpacks and Disney cruises, you’ll want to queue up these movies for before the flick drops or watch ’em after the last note of “Tale As Old As Time” ends.
IF YOU LIKE STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS, WATCH PRINCESS MONONOKE
Hayao Miyazaki is famous for films like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, but one of our favorites is a gem that features a strong female lead. San, who calls herself Princess Mononoke (a Japanese word meaning “spirit” or “monster”), is a woman who was raised by wolves and hates humankind, especially the humans who destroy the forest and use weapons to create demons and attempt to kill the Forest Spirit. San is a woman who fights for what she believes in, much like Belle and the women we look up to and aspire to be today. How’s that for empowering? Get it on Amazon. (Photo via Studio Ghibli)
IF YOU LIKE CLASSIC FAIRY TALES WITH A TWIST, WATCH ENCHANTED
Giselle is a beautiful princess who lives in the fantastical land of Andalasia. A prince rescues her from a troll set on her by one of the evil queen’s henchmen, and her animal friends watch as she is carried off into the sunset on the prince’s horse. End of story, happily ever after, right? Wrong. On her wedding day, she gets pushed into a fountain that sends her to a place where there are no happily ever afters — Earth. Watch it on Amazon. IF YOU LIKE LOVE IN A HOPELESS (-LY MAGICAL PLACE), WATCH STARDUST
The film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel tells the story of Tristan Thorn, a man hopelessly in love with the wrong woman. She got him fired from his job and is engaged to an insufferable, pompous man. In order to get Victoria’s hand in marriage, Tristan must fetch her a fallen star. He ventures into the neighboring magical kingdom to do just that, but realizes the fallen star is a woman. Hilarity and thrills ensue as both witches and fratricidal princes chase them. But will Tristan still want to deliver the star to Victoria after all they’ve been through together? Watch it on Amazon. (Photo via Paramount Pictures)
If You Like THE ORIGINAL, Watch BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Of Course)
We hardly think this one needs an explanation — it’s a tale as old as time, after all. But whether you’ve never seen it before or you’ve seen it too many times to count, you should watch it in order to really appreciate the live-action version. Be our guest and get it on Amazon. (Photo via Disney)
