DIY This Tiered Anthro Skirt for Half the Cost
Trust me when I say this Rails Tiered Patchwork Skirt ($138) from Anthropologie is a breeze to DIY. I’ll break it down for you — three pieces of fabric, six lines of stitching, and one set of elastic. Yes, that’s all that it is. What makes this skirt cute vs. dated is its length and the proportion of the tiered fabric. Follow along below to learn how to make the perfect knee-length skirt to transition you from summer into fall.
Materials and Tools:
Let’s get started!
Measure your waist and then the length from your waist to your knee. Jot these two measurements down. Our measurements were 34 inches for the waist and 26 inches for the length.
Now it’s time to cut your three pieces of fabric. We cut a 16 x 44-inch rectangle from chambray fabric, 6.5 x 64-inch rectangle from navy seersucker fabric, and a 7.5 x 99-inch rectangle from white cotton fabric.
Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch setting and setting 1 for tension. Sew a straight line down the long edge of the seersucker and white fabric.
Grab the top and bottom string of the stitching and pull to create ruffles in the fabric.
Pin the seersucker ruffled edge onto the bottom edge of the chambray fabric and then sew. Make sure you change your sewing machine back to the correct stitch length and tension before sewing.
Repeat for the white cotton.
Sew a 1/2-inch hem on the bottom edge of the white fabric.
Pin and sew the edges of the tiered fabric together to create a circle shape.
Fold the top edge of the skirt over to create a one-inch waist band. Pin and sew.
Cut two small holes in the front of the waist band for the elastic cord and cotton cord. Feed a piece of elastic cord through the waist band that is two inches shorter than your waist measurement. Tie in a knot and feed the knot into the waist band so it is hidden.
Cut a piece of cotton cord that is twice the measurement of your waist. Feed one end through the first hole and then out the second hole to create a drawstring.
Pair this layered skirt with a stacked heel and a trendy off-the-shoulder top.
This lightweight, knee-length skirt is the perfect piece to carry you right into fall.
