In the month since WWE superstars John Cena and Nikki Bella ended their engagement, both parties have had their share of difficulties navigating the surprise split. But there may be hope for a reconciliation, if these recent interviews are any indication.
During an appearance on NBC’s Today on Monday, Cena said in no uncertain terms that he would like to reconcile with his ex. “I still love Nicole. I would still love to marry Nicole. I still would love to have a family with Nicole,” he told hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.
It was rumored that Cena’s resistance to having children was one of the reasons for the split, and while the Blockers actor admitted on Today that he had been selfish and stubborn on the matter in the past, he now says things have changed. Bella, when asked by Us Weekly about her ex-fiancé’s interview, admitted that she was “speechless.”
The Total Divas star also told ET that she has hope for their relationship. “John is such an amazing man. He really is the love of my life,” she said. “I truly hope one day that we can work it out and get back together. I think there is hope.”
In any case, Cena told Today he understands his ex’s decision and will continue to stand behind her. “I love Nicole, and I’m really trying to support her in her trying to find whatever it is that she wanted that made this fall apart in the first place,” he said. “And, in doing so, I’m also just trying to live. I don’t have any other hopes, other than maybe, one day, we can work it out.”
