Katy Perry Says All of the Awards She’s Won “Are Fake”

Katy Perry’s live-streamed Witness weekend seems to have sparked all kinds of revelations for the singer, from attempting to end her feud with Taylor Swift (with an apology, no less) to addressing her cultural appropriation, her identity struggles, and her past lovers. But even before all of that, Perry gave an interview to The New York Times, where she claimed that all of the awards she’s won “are fake.” Say what?!

“All the awards shows are fake, and all the awards that I’ve won are fake,” the 32-year-old “Swish Swish” singer insisted.

Perry is the winner of one Teen Choice Award, three MTV Video Music Awards, three Kids’ Choice Awards, and four People’s Choice Awards. She’s also been nominated for a Grammy seven times. Seems pretty impressive, TBH.

@katyperry, who released her fourth major label album, “Witness,” last week, stands as one of the biggest successes in the industry, alongside @madonna, @beyoncé and her wildly famous rival, @taylorswift. @katyperry has sold 6.5 million albums and nearly 71 million digital songs in the U.S., notched 14 Top 10 @billboard Hot 100 hits; performed at the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show; and landed a gig as a judge on the revamped @americanidol. But thanks to @madonna’s restlessness, female pop stars are expected to reinvent themselves every few years. And for @katyperry, the stakes couldn’t be higher: She believes she’s now revealing her true self. “The old Katy Perry wasn’t a construct and she isn’t dead,” the 32-year-old pop star said. “I didn’t kill her, because I love her, and she is exactly what I had to do then.” She added: “I’m not a con artist, I didn’t con people, like, that was just me. However, Perry says that the awards aren’t really valid since, in her opinion, they in no way reflect the fans at home. And those are the people she really cares about. She added that the awards are “constructs” (a pretty bold thing to say since she has a new album that will soon be up for the same awards she’s currently claiming are irrelevant).

Though this goes along with her honest vibe, Perry says that her current behavior is “a departure, and it’s a necessary evolution that I have to take.” She explained, “I know that sometimes it feels publicly like I’m dragging cement blocks, but like, the pyramids were made out of cement blocks — or not cement. But do you know what I’m trying to say? I’m gonna get there.”
