‘Life Is Beautiful’ Is Coming to Netflix on April 1
April Fools‘ is creeping closer, which means that you’ll need to prepare yourself for pranks, jokes, and more than a little bit of silliness. But we’re not foolin’ when we tell you that Life Is Beautiful is coming to Netflix on April 1.
Roberto Benigni directed, co-wrote, and starred in the 1997 film as Guido, a Jewish Italian father who dreams up creative and silly ways of distracting his son from the bleak reality of life in a concentration camp.
Despite facing criticism for its use of comedy to tell a story about such a dark chapter of modern history, the film was much beloved by both audiences and critics alike.
The movie is a heartwarming testament to the human spirit and was a major hit. It also led to one of the most memorable moments in Academy Awards history when Benigni, who co-wrote the story with Vincenzo Cerami, won the 71st Oscar for Best Actor for his leading role.
Elated by his win — which saw his role earn the award over stunning performances by acting giants like Tom Hanks (for Saving Private Ryan), Ian McKellen (for Gods and Monsters), and Edward Norton (for American History X) — Benigni ran up and down the prestigious theater’s aisle, shaking hands and beaming out a joyful smile. He then climbed over chairs AND CELEBS to take the stage where it became even more clear how much the Oscar meant to him.
