Ohm K Will Make You LOL During Your Next Yoga Class
January’s post-holidays rush and beyond, yoga is one of the most popular ways to exercise. According to a survey from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease and Prevention from 2012, nearly 10 percent of US adults have done yoga, and that number is likely even higher now. But if you thought yoga was only about focusing on your breath and quiet meditation, you thought wrong. Now, there is cat yoga, beer yoga and a yoga clothing brand that wants to keep you laughing.
The best part about Ohm K is that everything is sustainably sourced and they work with local artists to create the designs. For example, $1 from all sales of “The Julie” tank ($36) goes to Exhale to Inhale, a non-profit that provides yoga and meditation opportunities to women who have been victims of domestic violence.
Company co-founder Katie Vohwinkel Lucas notes: “Especially in the yoga world, you’ll find many products that claim to be eco friendly, recycled, organic, but they don’t explicitly say where they make their fabric, how and where they produce. We live in a culture where transparency is becoming incredibly important to the consumer. We want to know where are products come from, who they support and how they impact the Earth. We want to be leading the change in 100% brand transparency and continue our efforts to produce ethical and sustainable products.”
And don’t ask the designers to pick just one piece. “This feels like Sophie’s Choice!” Lucas says. “It’s hard to choose one simply because each design takes us back to a moment of joking around, an idea from the Ohm K community, a brainstorming session with a local Brooklyn artist and connects us to the amazing organizations that our designs support. These crop tops and pants were a labor of love and took us all of 2015 to create.”
Laughter is the best medicine, after all.
