Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have celebrated some pretty traditional milestones — first date, meeting the parents, moving in together — but they've also had some unique markers on their romantic journey. First Date: As they recounted in their post-engagement interview with the BBC, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend in July 2016. "I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her," Harry recalled. "I was like, 'Okay, I'm really going to have to up my game.'" (Photo via Alastair Grant/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
First Trip: For their third date, Prince Harry took Meghan Markle somewhere very special to him: Botswana, Africa. "We met once and then twice, back-to-back, two dates in London last July, and then it was, I think, about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana, and we camped out with each other under the stars," Harry recalled in their post-engagement interview with the BBC. "She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic." (Photo via Owen Humphreys/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Meeting the Parents: Prince Harry reportedly met Meghan Markle's mother, Doria Ragland, soon after they started dating in the summer of 2016. Markle's turn came a bit later, reportedly that fall, on a trip to Prince Charles' Birkhall hunting lodge on the grounds of the Balmoral estate. According to reports, the former actress was there to help celebrate Prince Harry's 32nd birthday. She and her fiancé have since had "a handful of teas and meetings and all sorts of gatherings" with his father. (Photo via Scott Barbour/Getty Images)
Going Public: After months of rumors, Prince Harry confirmed his relationship with Meghan Markle in an official statement from Kensington Palace on November 8, 2016. Unfortunately, the reason for his message was not a happy one. In the statement, which referred to Markle as his "girlfriend," he criticized the "racist undertones" of press coverage of their relationship and called for an end to the "harassment currently being experienced by Meghan Markle and her family." First Holiday Season: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in a holly-jolly mood in December 2016, when they popped out to buy their first Christmas tree together. According to reports, they spent the week before December 25 in London before the actress flew home to be with her family. Harry, of course, celebrated with the rest of the royals at Sandringham, then reunited with Markle to ring in the new year. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
First Public Event: By May 2017, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were ready to attend their first public event together. The actress cheered on her boyfriend as he played in the Audi Polo Challenge at Coworth Park Polo Club in Ascot, England. Afterward, they were photographed sharing an affectionate goodbye in the parking lot. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
First Family Wedding: Meghan Markle previously accompanied Prince Harry to the wedding of his best friend, Tom Inskip, in Jamaica, but her first family wedding was that of Duchess Kate's sister Pippa Middleton to James Matthews. While Markle wasn't invited to attend the actual ceremony, Harry reportedly drove 100 miles round trip just to pick up his girlfriend for the reception. First Public Appearance: Though they attended their first public event together in May 2017, their first big appearance as a couple was at the Invictus Games in September. The two made their debut at a wheelchair tennis event in Toronto, where they were photographed holding hands and laughing while sitting front and center for all to see. Meeting the Queen: Meeting your significant other's extended family can be intimidating even under normal circumstances, but it's a different matter entirely when your boyfriend's grandmother just happens to be the queen of England. It's not clear exactly when Meghan Markle first met Queen Elizabeth II — reports suggest it was sometime in September or October of 2017 — but it went swimmingly. She even won over the corgis, according to Prince Harry.
"It's incredible, I think, you know, to be able to meet her through his lens," Markle said of Queen Elizabeth II. "Not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother. … She's an incredible woman." (Photo via Chris Jackson/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Moving in Together: After wrapping her seven-season run on Suits last year, Meghan Markle left her apartment in Toronto, where the series was filmed, to move to England to be with Prince Harry. They now live together in the two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace, where Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton (along with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis) are their neighbors. Getting Engaged: On November 27, 2017, around the time they moved in together, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement and plans to marry in 2018. Harry proposed earlier in the month on a quiet night at home while they were "trying" to roast a chicken. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
First Joint Interview: Hours after announcing their engagement, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down for their first (and so far, only) joint interview. Over the course of 20 minutes or so, they told the BBC about everything from how they met to how he proposed to their plans for the future. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
First Official Engagement: A few days after announcing their plans to marry, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped out for their first official joint engagement on behalf of the royal family. The pair traveled to Nottingham, England, for the Terrence Higgins Trust World AIDS Day charity fair, where they charmed the crowd of well-wishers who had shown up to meet them. First Royal Christmas: In a break with tradition, Meghan Markle was invited to celebrate the holidays with the royal family at Queen Elizabeth II's Sandringham estate. (Duchess Kate didn't have her first Christmas there until after she and William were married.)
"It was fantastic. She really enjoyed it. The family loved having her there," Prince Harry told the BBC. "We had great fun staying with my brother and sister-in-law and running around with the kids." (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
