Starbucks’ New Color-Changing Cold Brew Is Like a Caffeinated Mood Ring
Starbucks always finds new ways to spice up our social media feeds: The brand’s Valentine’s Day drink was oh-so-pretty, and the unicorn frappucino was basically Instagram gold. Its latest offering just may top them all however: It’s downright psychedelic!
In honor of the long-awaited early days of spring, Starbucks Asia is releasing a Butterfly Pea Flower Lemonade Cold Brew, and, get, this: It’s COLOR-CHANGING! Just like your mood ring you wore in the ’90s, this little beauty can swap its hue with the swish of your straw thanks to the Butterfly Pea tea it’s infused with.
The blue brew is popular in Malaysian cuisine, such as rice and cakes, and in Thailand, where it is served as a traditional welcome drink. Its seemingly magical powers come from an ingredient called Asian Pigeonwing, which has a super sensitive PH that reacts to even the slightest shift in acidity (such as, say, a drop of lemon juice).
When paired with the lemonade and cold brew coffee the coffee chain has married it with, it can go from a deep indigo to a rich violet just like that. *Snaps fingers*
And that’s not all. Starbucks Asia is also introducing two more spring-inspired drinks, including the Macadamia Cocoa Cappuccino and the Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato.
Nutty and a little sweet, the Macadamia Cocoa Cappuccino blends macadamia chocolate sauce with creamy milk foam for a super rich indulgent treat. It’s topped with a nutty chocolate sauce, macadamia nuts, and graham crackers for texture and comes either hot and iced.
The Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato, by contrast, is made with steamed milk with Tahitian vanilla syrup and topped with Starbucks Signature Espresso. It has vanilla bean specks and vanilla drizzle to finish it all off and also comes hot or iced.
While it’s a bummer that these stunning new drinks are only available in Asia, we can always hope that their popularity will bring ’em stateside soon.
Starbucks, please hear our calls! Meanwhile, we’re looking up flights to Asia.
