Between celebrating triumphs and sharing sorrows (Jaaaaaaack!) with the Pearson family over the past year, the cast of This Is Us has found a major place in our hearts. So we were beyond thrilled when Susan Kelechi Watson (who plays Beth on the NBC show) gave us a first look inside her West Coast home. With the help of HomeGoods, the native New Yorker was able to share the intimate details of her transformation of her Afrocentric-meets-minimalistic space. Scroll down for the behind-the-scenes tour!
Before her revamp, the star sat down with HomeGoods to create a space that reflects her own tastes and preferences. “I wanted something that reflects my culture. I’d describe it as Afrocentric meets Caribbean, with beautiful pops of color,” Kelechi Watson tells Brit + Co. “I was really feeling orange as my central color for the decor — especially in my living room.”
When it came to upgrading her place, the designers chose pieces that were both fabulous AND functional. Take, for example, her living room. “My styling station to the left of my dining table is completely functional: It doubles as home decor and a place to do my hair and make-up for the red carpet,” she says. The same methodology applies to other rooms of her home too. “I also found this great desk in the guest room that was super affordable and fits perfectly in the space, and I now use it as a mini home office for any paperwork I need to take care of,” she tells us.
When Kelechi Watson has some (rare) downtime, she enjoys entertaining, so it was essential to create a living space that encouraged it. “I like for people to come in to the space and immediately feel very comfortable, so I try to leave everything open and inviting. The living room now reflects a very warm, welcoming look that invites people to sit down, be comfortable and stay awhile,” she says. In true Beth fashion, the star approached her dining area with the same laid-back vibe. “When I’m having a dinner party, I like it to feel relaxed: It’s usually a combination of a sit-down meal and hanging out,” she says. “There are always places to put your drinks down or kick your feet up. I love how that feels. There are usually a lot of leftovers at the end for guests to take home food — it’s always better to have more than enough!” she says.
The actress’s favorite element of the redo is a simple, playful piece: a framed picture of the words “Hey Girl Hey” that hangs in the wet bar area. “I love it so much because one of my very good friends always says, ‘Hey girl hey,'” she said. “I felt like it was a nice way to warm up the party area.”
The sense of fun and imagination that Kelechi Watson cultivates in her home is an expression of her life philosophy, she says. Her advice for bringing it to your own life? “Do things that bring you joy — even if they are outside the box or sound crazy to someone else. You can stir up the creativity within you by just allowing yourself to be creative,” she says. “Imagine and then dream big. Be audacious in your goals and have fun bringing them to life.” Consider that our motivation for our design (and life!) goals in the months to come.
