How to Hack a Ponytail Without an Elastic

We’ve all been there: You get an immediate surge to throw your hair up, but you can’t find an elastic band anywhere. This chic hairstyle is your answer when you want to wear a polished style — sans elastic — that you can create in just a few minutes. So the next time you’re on the hunt for a hair tie, consider turning to this ponytail hair hack instead. It’ll save you the search and it’ll bring on all the flirty feels.

STEP 1: UNDER + OVER WRAP

First, split your hair into two sections. Wrap one section of hair underneath the other one.

Then, wrap it back on top to create a ponytail wrapped in a “scrunchie.” Keep wrapping your hair around your ponytail until you’ve reached the end of your strands. This look works best if you part your hair to one side at the front — you’ll see why at the end of this tutorial.

STEP 2: PIN THE ENDS INTO PLACE

Pin the ends of your hair into place to lock in this pretty style. Criss-crossing the bobby pins will keep it from unraveling.

STEP 3: ADD VOLUME BY TEASING

If you want to give your style a flirtier vibe, tease your hair at the base of your ponytail with a rat tail comb. This step also helps to lock in your ponytail even more at the root. Let the front layers of your hair drape slightly over your ears for a sophisticated finish.

There you have it: a hair hack every girl should know and turn to when they’re tired of the “where’s my hair tie?” headache!
