Roughly one year after Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris called it quits, Harris has something to say about those infamous tweets he posted in the aftermath of their split. When, after 15 months of dating, the former power couple’s relationship seemed to explode in a mess of Hiddleswift, the admission that Swift had cowritten Harris’s mega hit “This Is What You Came For” led Harris to a complete social media meltdown. The songwriter and DJ is now coming clean, apologizing for his role in the breakup in an exclusive interview.
The 32-year-old Scottish musician sat down with GQ magazine and was surprisingly candid about everything that’s happened to him in the last few years. While he admits that his emotions around his ex’s new relationship were pretty fresh, he concedes that he also shouldn’t have gone off on Swift in the public fashion he did.
The tweets in question came when Swift’s camp leaked the news that she was responsible for the lyrics to the DJ’s biggest single. Harris struck out at the 27-year-old directly, saying, “I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex-BF down for something to do,” a move he now regrets in hindsight.
“It was completely the wrong instinct,” he says, sighing. “I was protecting what I see as my one talent in the world being belittled. It felt like things were piling on top of me and that was when I snapped.” He continued on, adding, “It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly. The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicized than the relationship itself. When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense. I’m not good at being a celebrity. But when it ended, all hell broke loose. Now I see that Twitter thing as a result of me succumbing to pressure. It took me a minute to realize that none of that matters. I’m a positive guy.”
While Swift has not spoken about the pair’s split, Hiddleston, or much of anything else, really, with rumors swirling that a new album is coming this year, we’re sure we’ll get her side of the story via song at some point in 2017.
