Like the perfect cat eye or contoured face, creating beach waves is somewhat of a tricky technique. Enthusiasts will agree that it’s a cinch to achieve, while neophytes are more than wary of all of that styling. To find out how to master the undone, textured look, we enlisted celebrity hairstylist David Lopez to teach us using — get this — a flat iron.

“You want to make sure whatever flat iron you’re using at home has a beveled edge,” Lopez, who works with Hailey Baldwin and Chrissy Teigen, tells Brit + Co. “It just helps with being able to do waves and curls.”
