Miss USA Sparks Controversy With Comments About Non-English-Speaking Contestants

With just a few days to go until the 2018 Miss Universe pageant on Sunday, December 16, a video of Miss USA has sparked controversy online. In the video, which was reportedly captured from an Instagram live session on Miss Colombia Valeria Morales’ account, Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers comments on some of her fellow contestants who don’t speak English.

“What do you think of Miss Vietnam [H’Hen Nie] Nie?” Summers asks Morales and Miss Australia Francesca Hung in the clip. Summers then answers her own question, saying, “She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she goes [nods and smiles]. She’s adorable.” She then laughs and does her impression of Nie again.

In a separate clip, she comments on another contestant, Miss Cambodia, Rern Sinat. “Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine?” she asks. “Francesca said that would be so isolating and I said yes and just confusing all the time. … Poor Cambodia.”

Commenters were quick to call out Summers for the remarks. One pointed out that the competition, which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, is a global event (with contestants from 94 countries and territories) and not an “English class.” Some questioned whether Summers herself speaks multiple languages, and still others said that even if her comments weren’t intended to be mean-spirited, they came off as insensitive and condescending.

Summers was crowned Miss USA in May 2018. According to E! News, the Miss Universe organization has not yet commented on the video.

Stop what you’re doing! Folks, we’ve finally got some intel on this year’s Starbucks summer menu.

Per menu leaks from popular foodie and inside source, @markie_devo, the Starbucks summer menu will introduce some pretty wacky drinks that include never-before-seen flavors and ingredients (hint: Refreshers with a spicy twist)! In addition to 6 new summery sips, it appears Starbucks will introduce a few fruityfood items, too.

The new drinks and snacks on the Starbucks summer menu will allegedly hit stores on May 7, but the coffee chain will *also*reportedly be releasing new menu items before then to tide you over. Scroll for what items will be joining the rumored menu!

Take note that the Starbucks summer menu rumors are just rumors (at least for now), and have not been officially confirmed. Let’s get into it!

When does the Starbucks summer menu come out?

According to unconfirmed rumors posted online, the Starbucks summer menu is set to come out on May 7, 2024.

Does Starbucks have boba?

Photo by Telly Mina / PEXELS

Starbucks has never served boba nationwide before, but they did test it regionally for a brief period in late 2021. According to Tasting Table, only two Starbucks locations (one in California, one in Washington) tested out coffee boba pearls back then. The pearls were also popping boba (like the new summer drinks), but weren't received super well.

One person that tried the boba drinks in 2021 said the pearls were "really small and awkward to drink." People engaging in online discourse about the coffee boba pearls weren't happy about the attention and revenue the boba could potentially take away from small businesses serving authentic Taiwanese boba.

What's On The *Leaked* Starbucks Summer Menu

NEW! Summer-Berry Starbucks Refresher

The rumored Starbucks summer menu lists a brand-new line of iced Refresher drinks, with the Summer-Berry flavor leading! And... it has boba!

This alleged new sip is described as "a sweet summer blend of raspberry, blueberry and blackberry flavors mixed with water, lemonade or coconut milk and shaken with ice." It's poured over raspberry-flavored popping boba, which I expect would amp up the berry vibes even more!

NEW! Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher

This next rumored sip is shaken with lemonade rather than water, which could give it a citrusy, zingy effect. Lemonade is the perfect bev for summertime, and I have a hunch it could pair really well with the raspberry boba pearls.

NEW! Summer Skies Drink Refresher

The Starbucks summer menu rumors don't quite detail what the Summer Skies Refresher is, but based on the leaked images, I think it could just be the Summer-Berry Refresher with a splash of coconut milk, much like the Starbucks Pink Dink. It'll also include boba! And based on the images, it appears Starbucks could supply wider green straws to help you sip up the pearls.

White Chocolate Macadamia Cream Cold Brew

We've seen this drink on Starbucks menus before, and it's allegedly returning for summer 2024, which I am so excited about. The White Chocolate Macadamia Cream Cold Brew features "Starbucks signature cold brew sweetened with macadamia syrup, topped with a silky white-chocolate macadamia cream cold foam and finished with toasted cookie crumbles," according to Starbucks.

I feel like nutty flavors are more fit for fall, but it's nice that Starbucks is offering an option for the warmer months with this rumored returning iced coffee drink!

NEW! Orange Cream Cake Pop

The Starbucks summer menu rumors introduce a brand-new cake pop! The Orange Cream Cake Pop is described as "orange cream cake mixed with buttercream, dipped in chocolaty icing and finished with an orange slice design." The cute orange slice design honestly does it for me. I love an orange Dreamsicle, so I hope this Starbucks snack lives up to that standard!

NEW! Pineapple Cloud Cake

This rumored sweet snack is described as an "airy cake layered with a lightweight pineapple cream and pineapple spread with whole fruit pieces all topped with a sweet drizzle." It looks so yum.

What People Are Saying About The Rumored Starbucks Summer Menu

IG @markie_devo

The Starbucks summer menu rumors have sparked a fair amount of excitement online. A few commenters on @markie_devo's initial menu leak post said the proposed lineup looks appetizing and exciting.

"Now this looks good 💯🔥," one person wrote. "Finally something DIFFERENT," another said.

Some Starbucks fans were anticipating entirely different drinks for the summer menu, like the S'mores Frappuccino that came out in 2019.

"Where's the smores frapp😫," the first comment reads. "Wish they’d bring back the S’mores Frappuccino 😔," another wrote.

Starbucks isn't the first big coffee chain to add boba to their menu. Dunkin' had featured strawberry-flavored popping pearls on their menu back in 2021, and Dutch Bros just debuted their version in February 2024. Some Starbucks customers commenting on the menu rumors noticed this.

"Stole from Dutch lmao," one person wrote. "Dunkin did it first lol. But these are super interesting," another said.

Starbucks Is Doing Something Spicy...

Spicy Dragonfruit Refresher

Rumors about some spicy Starbucks Refreshers are also floating around the internet after @markie_devo posted a potential lineup. The first drink (of three) is the Spicy Dragonfruit Refresher. The rumored drink is your traditional Refresher, except shaken with "a new Spicy Chili Powder Blend" to bring a nice kick of flavor!

The spicy Refreshers will reportedly only be available for limited time. Rumors around the spicy lineup say they could be released in stores on April 16, 2024.

Spicy Strawberry Refresher

The Spicy Strawberry Refresher looks the most refreshing of all the rumored spicy Starbucks drinks. It looks like it's just the OG Strawberry Refresher base shaken with ice, fruit bits, and the spice blend. I bet it'd be so heavenly if you ordered it blended with ice, so it becomes a nice slushy texture!

Spicy Pineapple Refresher

I'm most excited about this rumored menu item because in my opinion, pineapple and spice are a classic combo! I've eaten way too much Tajin-covered fruit in my lifetime, and I can only hope this rumored drink emulates those flavors! This one also seems like the perfect contender to add a lil' splash of tequila for an easy cocktail. 👀

What People Are Saying About The Rumored Spicy Starbucks Refreshers

IG @markie_devo

In the wake of brand-new spicy drinks at Starbucks, some customers were thrown off by the menu rumors that @markie_devo posted.

"🤮 kinda takes away the “refreshing” aspect lol," one person wrote. "But I guess people who like spicy stuff on fruit will be happy."

One alleged Starbucks barista commented on the validity of the menu rumors, saying: "As someone who works at Starbucks, this isn’t fake, we got our chili powder in already 😃"

I'm excited to see how this pans out!

February 4, 2024 — Taylor Swift And Lana Del Rey Attend The 2024 Grammys

Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey were both up for some big awards at the Grammys, but the most notable ended up being Album of the Year. When Taylor Swift won for Midnights (becoming the first person to ever win the award a fourth time), she ended up bringing Lana up onstage with her since Lana had been involved — a move that divided a lot of viewers.

"Taylor Swift dragging Lana Del Rey to the stage after Lana lost the award for Album of the Year to her was so uncomfortable to watch sorry," one X user posted.

"Taylor Swift having Lana Del Rey come on the stage for her win and thanking her during her speech was something very special," another user disagreed. "Knowing Lana has never walked that stage. Extremely classy and Lana got a moment she deserved."

February 8, 2024 — Lana Del Rey Sets The Record Straight About The Grammys Debacle

Despite the negative responses to how Taylor Swift acted at the Grammys, Lana Del Rey made sure to let everyone know she had a great time, no matter what.

"I literally just loved being there," she commented on an Instagram post (via X). "I love to see everyone, get the tea and hang out, get dressed up ” she wrote. “I literally did not feel 1 ounce of negative emotion at any point in that award ceremony. It was pure funniness and laughter.”

February 11, 2024 — Taylor Swift Invited Lana Del Rey To Her VIP Super Bowl Suite

The friends both attended Super Bowl LVIII, though there was a fair amount of confusion among fans after pictures of Lana Del Rey sitting at a lower tier than Taylor at the Super Bowl leaked at the beginning of the game.

Many were wondering if the quasi-drama between Taylor and Lana that was cropped up at the Grammys was continuing, even at football's biggest game. One potential reason for the pair's initial separation could be that Lana is a die-hard 49ers fan, as opposed to Taylor, who was obviously rooting for the Chiefs (Travis).

No matter the real reason (we may never know), their distance didn't last long. Taylor soon invited Lana to sit with her squad in the VIP suite, and they were seen celebrating the game together.

April 3, 2024 — Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce Plan To See Lana Del Rey At Coachella

After spending some time on a Bahamas vacation, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have their sights set on Coachella! “They both want to see Lana Del Rey and [Jack Antonoff’s band] Bleachers,” says a Page Six insider, who also says the couple will be renting a house. Lana Del Rey is headlining the festival (which is at Indio, California's Empire Polo Club from April 12-14 and The Tortured Poets Department release weekend April 19-21). Bleachers will perform on April 13 and 20.

Though we're all about our reusable water bottles (and everything related to the Stanley tumbler), the love we have for fancy-shmancy bottled water is just undeniable. Despite the crisp, cold convenience associated with bottled water, there's a *huge* rift in which brands actually taste good.

Some drinkers prefer Aquafina over Dasani (or even artesian water cuvée, like the cast of Vanderpump Rules), and that's okay – but sommelier Belinda Chang has an immeasurable wealth of knowledge to dictate which ones are worth sipping on based on their flavor (and yes, they differ). Not every bottled water is created equal, and this expert-backed ranking is proof. Onward!

Meet Sommelier Brenda Chang

Image via BelindaChang.com

Belinda Chang hails from Chicago, and was formerly the head of the wine and spirits program at upscale steakhouse Maple & Ash, so she knows her drinks. While she usually puts her skills towards perfect pairings of wine and sumptuous meals, Belinda welcomed Thrillist into her domain to put water to the ultimate test.

Belinda compared ten different bottled water brands by evaluating their flavor, aroma, texture and finish of each, giving them a score out of a possible 100 points. Her bottled water ratings shed light on which brands you should drink!

“A good bottled water shouldn’t have any off-putting aromas or flavors – that would be an automatic negative,” Belinda explained. “In wine, we always talk about terroir, and I think for water, it’s the same. You want it to speak of the place where it comes from. And, of course, you want it to be delicious.”

The Best Bottled Waters, Ranked

10. Propel: 69/100

Image via Propel

When it came to tasting Propel bottled water, Belinda was immediately put off by the odor, saying it smells "salty, metallic.” Ew. When it came to taste, it might not have been as bad, but it certainly wasn’t an A+.

“When it gets onto your tongue, the impact is bizarre. The texture and flavor is a lot like Gatorade, but not masked with orange or blue raspberry.”

9. Dasani: 70/100

Image via Dasani

Dasani was another bottled water that was... somewhat stinky. “See, this one does not smell good — it smells like a wine that’s been dosed with sulphates.” What’s with all the smelly water?

Belinda deemed that when it comes to Dasani, “The thirst-quenching quotient is really low on this guy.”

8. Ice Mountain: 81/100

Image via Ice Mountain

Ice Mountain bottled water got it right if you’re looking for nothing but water – tasteless water.

“It’s completely neutral in almost every way, which I think is a total positive.” In this case, definitely. Though Belinda did note a slight “mineral-y” aftertaste, a “pipe-like flavor.” No thanks.

7. Aquafina: 84/100

Image via Aquafina

Instead of tasting pipe-like, Belinda felt Aquafina tasted “a little powdery, with some dissolved minerals and a little bit of salt.” Still, she felt that this was a decent thirst-quencher.

“For an inexpensive water that you’re just drinking because you’re in the airport and you want to hydrate before you go on a flight, I think this is a good option.”

6. Naleczowianka: 89/100

Image via Nateczowianka

Naleczowianka bottled water was another water with a “distinctive” smell — this time, a stony hint. Kinda strangely, it made Belinda think of “a salt character — I want it with a pierogi.” That’s… specific.

Overall, this one failed where it seems to matter the most, with the skilled sommelier noting, “It’s not that thirst-quenching. It dries out the palate.”

5. Evian: 90/100

Image via Evian

Evian bottled water is better when it comes to the smell, Belinda claiming it’s “really clean on the nose.” But interestingly, she also noted, “I do taste the Alps — I don’t smell them, but I taste them. And I can definitely imagine myself après-ski with a bottle of Evian.” That’s a plus for Evian!

4. Smeraldina: 92/100

Image via Smeraldina

Smeraldina bottled water scored slightly higher than Evian despite the fact that “after you have a sip of it, it feels like there’s this fine silt lying on your tongue.”

Besides that, however, “this would transport you back to the south of Italy.” Whoa. First the Alps, now Italy. We’re globetrotting with every sip.

3. Smartwater: 93/100

Image via Drink Smart Water

Smartwater is actually something that Belinda is familiar with herself, but admitted, “I’ve always chugged this the next morning when I’m hungover.” However, when she took some time to consider it, she claims, “it’s probably 1000% the marketing, but it does taste different,” i.e. a really interesting texture in the mid-palate, which Belinda assumes is the added electrolytes.

2. Fiji: 98/100

Image via Fiji Water

Fiji took the runner-up spot of the best bottled water to drink, partly due to the fact that it’s “totally neutral on the nose, which [Belinda thinks] is important,” but it was also the fact that it’s a heavy water that got Belinda’s stamp of approval.

“[If] you want to drink a glass of water after a spectacular dish or, like, a great bite of a burger, you want something that cleanses, and this is it. I really love this water.”

1. Roundy's Purified Drinking Water: 99/100

Image via Roundy's

And the bottled water winner is… Roundy’s! First, the smell won Belinda over. “This is going to sound so weird, but it’s a little sweet-smelling — which I like!” But, of course, that wasn’t all. Taste is the major factor here, and the sommelier thought this option was delicious. “It has no pretension, it’s incredibly thirst-quenching.

It doesn’t taste like anything, which is perfect. When you’re drinking water you just want to be drinking water, and this is the most watery of all the waters. This is the Moet Imperial of bottled water — it’s simple, it’s classic and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. It delivers and that’s my professional opinion.”

What are the top 5 worst bottled waters?

Propel, Dasani, Ice Mountain, Aquafina, and Naleczowianka are the top 5 worst bottled waters according to their taste.

Is bottled water safe to drink?

In terms of your health, all plastic bottled waters are the worst – they can contain hundreds of thousands of microplastics that harm the body. The safest bottled water you can drink is likely some filtered water that you put into a reusable water bottle.
