There were a lot of A-list celebrities at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May 2018 royal wedding, but only Idris Elba had the honor of acting as DJ for the couple’s reception. This week, in a new interview, the actor revealed how he ended up with the once-in-a-lifetime gig.

“Harry and I, we’ve hung out a couple of times through his dad,” Elba, who hails from London, said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, February 27. “His dad’s charity The Prince’s Trust helped me out as a young actor. So I do a lot of work with them and met Harry and William a few times.”

He then explained that he’d DJed a couple of parties that Harry had attended, and that the royal had apparently liked what he’d heard enough to ask the Luther star, “Hey, man, what are you doing on the date [of the wedding]?”

“I was like, ‘Nothing,'” Elba recalled. “He goes, ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’ I was like, ‘Is this a joke? Are you joking?’ And he’s, like, serious. It was great.”

Elba has another high-profile gig coming up in a few months. The current Sexiest Man Alive is scheduled to perform both weekends at Coachella in April. “I play house,” he previously told Ryan Seacrest. “Been DJing all my life. I’m gonna rock Coachella, I can’t wait.”

The actor has already taken his skills to Glastonbury and Creamfields in the UK, and collaborated with industry veterans including Fatboy Slim on “Uptown Funk.”
