The Easy Side Bun That Will Wow at Your Wedding
Wedding bells in your future? Congratulations, love! Now… what about that hair though? We get that your next-level wedding calls for an amazing hair hack, so we’ve designed this game changing tutorial just for you, the blushing bride! We guarantee this side swoop will make you swoon and, best of all, you can do it yourself in about 15 stress-free minutes on the big day. We love the romantic waves of this iconic side-gathered style made popular by hair goddesses Lauren Conrad and Carrie Underwood. We guarantee your other half will be awaiting your arrival down the aisle with baited breath. Practice making it yours with the steps below, and be sure to share your wedding day style with us.
STEP 1: CURL + SIDE PONY
We’re big fans of this style because it’s gorgeous and pretty fail-proof. First, curl your hair in a backwards motion with a large barrel curling iron. Styling tip: Pay extra close attention to face-framing fringe. For semi-tighter curls at the front, try a smaller wand to create varying come-hither waves at different lengths. After all your hair has been curled, gather the back of your hair to one side, and hold it in place with a clear elastic band. Be sure to leave the sides out — we’ll be playing with those shortly.
STEP 2: HACK HEIGHT
With the pointy side of a rat tail comb, add instant volume by lifting gently at the scalp. This step really gives your hair that modern — yet polished — vibe for the big day.
STEP 3: TEASE IT OUT
Now that volume is set up top, let’s set volume at the bottom. Bust out your trusty rat tail comb again, and tease your ponytail at the root (near the elastic band), middle and end. You can leave your ponytail down as is, but for this style, we’re pinning it up to mimic styles worn by Lauren Conrad and Carrie Underwood.
STEP 3: SET BUN + PIN FRINGE
It’s super easy to create a messy bun once your hair has been curled and teased by raising your pony into a low messy bun. Once your bun is perfect, begin pinning it in place.
Next, gather any hair at the front that you want to pin backwards — remember you want soft layers of face-framing strands, not anything too heavy — and layer them on top of your bun. Set your style with additional pins and holding spray.
Look in the mirror to assess how much fringe looks best, resting along your face. Pin away any additional strands, and set your completed style with humidity-resistant hairspray to lock in your look, tame frizz and help against any humid or rainy conditions. This Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Humidity Hair Spray ($16) is a bride’s best friend!
Now you can dash away to the big day with full, glorious hair that’ll last all night!
Add a brooch or hairpin to your bun to take it up a notch. A floral hair piece is perfect for any spring bride!
