Get Organized with DIY Belted Storage Totes

While forging ahead with spring cleaning here at Brit HQ, we found ourselves with a lot of empty boxes and a lot of little things that needed to be stored. Clearly, it’s time for yet another organization hack. The solution seemed obvious, but how does one make a cardboard box actually look stylish and less… boxy? Cover the boxes with sturdy fabrics and add belts, of course!

Supplies:
– 3 square boxes (sizes: 14 inch, 12 inch, and 10 inch)
– 3 colors of fabric (The 10 inch and 12 inch box need 2 yards of fabric each, and the 14 inch box needs 3 yards)
– spray adhesive
– 3 old belts (we found ours at a thrift store!)
– 48 brads
– 6 screw bolts
– gold paint pen

Tools:
– ruler

– fabric scissors

– little sewing scissors

– drill

This project is so easy you could adapt it to any size box you already have, but we decided to use 3 standard sizes that would nest inside each other for easy storage. To start out, we are going to walk you through making a tote using a 10 inch square box.

We recommend ironing the fabric you intend to use so it goes on your box as smooth as possible.

Measure out a rectangle that is 26 inches x 42 1/2 inches.

Cut it out (insert us mimicking Joey Gladstone’s signature hand gesture).Pro Tip: If you have a table with a line down the middle, line up your fabric and use that as a guide to cut the perfect straight line.

Now fold over 1 inch of the longer horizontal side that is 42 1/2 inches, and crease by ironing it while folded. Now, with the longer side still laid out horizontally, place the box in the middle with the open side facing away from you. Use a ruler to place it 5 inches from the bottom of the fabric.

Apply spray adhesive to the right side and the top (we recommend spraying outside or in a well-ventilated area). Wrap the fabric fairly tight and smooth out any air bubbles with your hands. This is almost like wrapping a present – pretty easy, huh?

Roll the box 180 degrees to the left so the side that was facing up is now facing down. Spray the left side and what is now the top with the spray adhesive and wrap the fabric around it as well. Repeat the pressing and smoothing of the fabric. Now fold the extra fabric that is facing you like a present and use the spray adhesive to hold it in place.

Now flip the box so the open part of it is facing you. Cut the fabric to the corner of each side of the box as shown in the photo (you should have made 4 cuts). Turn the box with the open part facing up, spray the insides of the box with the spray adhesive, and fold the flaps in. Press and smooth fabric into place.

Next up, hold the belt in place where you want it to end up and mark so you know where to cut it. Then cut the belt (fabric scissors will work on this, really!) where you marked it.

Now mark 1 inch from the top of the open side of the box where you want the belt to be attached – make sure you don’t attach the belt on the side with the fabric seam. Use a drill to drill a hole in the box on your mark. Then drill a hole in the belt. Attach the belt using the screw bolts.

Wow, it’s looking good! Now mark a 1/2 inch from each corner so you know where the brads will go.

Use your mini sewing scissors (cuticle scissors would work too) to create a hole at each of those marks. Push the brads through to create a professional upholstered look.

To take this tote to a whole other level, paint the screw bolts with the gold paint pen. This unifies the design and completes the look.

We liked the first one so much, we went on to make one in a 12 inch and 14 inch size! We used a different belt on each one because we just couldn’t resist experimenting with the different colors leather belts come in.

*Measurements for the 12 inch square box:

Cut fabric to be 31 inches by 50 inches. Follow the same steps as above, except this time we allowed 6 inches of fabric to cover the bottom instead of the 5 inches used in the box described above.

*Measurements for the 14 inch square box:

Cut fabric to be 36 inches by 58 inches. This time allow 7 inches of fabric to cover the bottom.

Now fill your totes with whatever your heart desires; or whatever needs picked up and stashed!

We filled ours with ribbon, yarn, and books. But we also made extra totes to take home and plan to fill them with blankets, towels, hair supplies, magazines, and firewood.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes welcomed Esmerelda Amada Gosling into the world in September of 2014. Eva later said that she didn't even want kids until she got together with Ryan. "I was lucky enough to work my bum off for 20 years," she tells Nova 96.9's Fitzy & Wippa (via PEOPLE). "I never wanted babies before until I fell in love with Ryan, and it kind of worked out to where I was 40 and having my first baby. February 22, 2014 - Eva Mendes Announces Upcoming Children's Book

Yesterday Eva Mendes shared with People that she's penned a children's book named Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries that'll debut September 17. It's all about a little girl who's always worried that her scary brain is the real monster she's afraid of at night. Through gentle reminders, Desi's mom helps her understand that being afraid is normal and teaches her how not to let scary thoughts control her.

Eva Mendes told People the books is like "a love letter to my kids and yours" because "...Learning how to train our brain to work for us and not against us is easier said than done!" She also says she's “so lucky” to “have this time with [their] children.”

“I have never experienced anything like [working with Ryan Gosling]. The way he works, his commitment to his craft, how he wants to make everything as best as it can be, and that means making his co-stars as best as they can be,” she continues. “But unfortunately — or fortunately — there is only one Ryan!"

After losing her brother in 2016, Eva Mendes says she has a "complicated relationship" with the month of April — but that her daughters make it infinitely more bearable. "[April 2] would have been my brother’s birthday," she says on Instagram. "In a couple of weeks from now is the day we lost him…but then, the end of April we got the biggest blessing of all, my little girl was born 8 years ago. I hate you April. But I love you more."

May 1, 2024 — Ryan Gosling Is The Ultimate Support System For Eva Mendes

Eva Mendes is not here for the mom-shamers. She told People (in honor of its 2024 Beautiful Issue) that staying home to focus on Ryan Gosling and her kids was the "easiest decision I've ever made" because she wanted to be there for their formative childhood years.

"When I was 40, it was a big deal for people when I was pregnant, and it wasn't for me," she says. "And then I was 42 and I was pregnant with my second one and people were like, 'Oh my God, you're going to be so tired. That's why people have kids in their 20s.' I was like, that's the most sorry, asinine thing I've ever heard."

A "Verity" Movie Is Officially On Its Way

Thanks to Challengers and The Watchers, I can already tell 2024 is going to be a year of shocking movies (and shockingly good movies), and that trend is going to continue thanks to Verity & Colleen Hoover. While It Ends With Us might be the most popular Colleen Hoover book, Verity is arguably the craziest, and The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed that a movie is officially in development! Yes, a movie based on Colleen Hoover's Verity is officially on the way! The movie's in development at Amazon MGM Studios (the studio behind Florence Pugh's A Good Person and Zendaya's Challengers). Hillary Seitz is currently writing the script for the film, and Eat the Cat's Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund are producing.

What is Verity about?

In Verity by Colleen Hoover, Lowen Ashleigh is a writer struggling to make ends meet. That is, until she's offered the job of a lifetime by Jeremy, husband to the ultimate it-girl author, Verity Crawford. The thriller writer is no longer able to finish the remaining books in her series, and Jeremy wants Lowen to pick up where she left off. While Lowen is over the moon to step in (both into the job and their huge family estate), a secret manuscript and family secrets lead Lowen to realize Verity's hiding a lot more than she's letting on. B+C editor Haley Sprankle says this is one of the craziest books she's ever read, and I know this is definitely going to be one of the craziest movies we've seen!

Who's in the Verity cast?

Since the movie is just now in development, we don't have an official Verity cast list yet. But considering It Ends With Us is starring beloved actors like Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and Jenny Slate, I'm confident the cast of Verity will feature some incredible names.

Popular fancasts for Verity include You's Victoria Pedretti or The White Lotus' Alexandra Diddario as Lowen, Rosamund Pike or Margot Robbie as Verity, and Shia LaBeouf or Theo James as Jeremy. Without a doubt, the cast of Verity needs to be warm and welcoming at first glance, but also have an unexpected edge that reveals itself as we move through the story.

One Reddit user points out that the characters need to offer "just toxicity but also feigned innocence," and each of these actors do exactly that, which makes them incredible picks for the movie. If Blake wasn't already in It Ends With Us, I know she'd do a great job because she proved her thriller acting chops in A Simple Favor!

When did Verity come out?

Colleen Hoover self-published Verity in 2018, and in 2021, the book was acquired by Grand Central Publishing. It sold more than one million copies in 2023, and has more than 340 thousand Amazon ratings and over two million Goodreads ratings. Talk about a hit!
