Productivity Hacks To Streamline Operations As A Solopreneur

In our new series, Selfmade U, we’ll tackle the most common questions and pain points that come up for business owners with tips and tricks from Selfmade, a virtual business coaching program, led by Brit + Co founder Brit Morin and sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax. Staying on task can be challenging when you’re an entrepreneur. You’re wearing multiple hats and being pulled in all sorts of directions, being often the sole decision maker. “I'm a big list maker,” says Leeanna Gantt, founder of tooktake, a no-tech reminder to take daily meds and supplements. “I make a list at the end of the day, and in the morning, once I've seen what's really happening that day, I'll usually revise my list.”


After receiving breast cancer treatment, Leeanna created a system for tracking all of her medication and realized the system could work for others too. “I thought it can't just be me who can't do this one simple thing. It's not that hard, but for some reason it is that hard,” she recalls.


Even though Leanna was starting to place tooktake in stores, she looked to Selfmade to help her expand her business, earning an Office Depot OfficeMax scholarship to the program. “The scholarship allowed me to join the Selfmade community, which was huge. I get so much advice from the webinars and when I have a really simple question, I have a community to throw it out to and get suggestions from them. It has been so helpful.” (Tooktake is now sold in major drugstores across the U.S.).

Beyond community, the biggest takeaway from Selfmade was learning different organizational tips, says Leeanna. “Just the other day, [Selfmade business coach] Emily Merrell did a webinar about managing your emails in your inbox, which was very helpful for me.” Some of the inbox hacks she learned in the webinar? Consolidate your email accounts, set up folders, use filters, and install Gmail extensions to help streamline your business.

Here are more hacks to help you organize your business and stay productive.

  • Focus on singular tasks. “I think I'm much more efficient when I focus on one thing at a time,” says Leeanna. Dedicating a block of time to one task, whether it’s answering emails, creating marketing content, fulfilling shipment orders, will help you get those tasks done and done well without distractions. “I check my emails first thing, and then I will focus on shipping and ordering and then outreach,” adds Leeanna.
  • Delegate things that are less important to you. “I've delegated things that are usually something that I really don't feel very comfortable doing,” says Leeanna. This doesn’t have to be a full-time employee. But if you need help with copywriting, packaging, accounting, marketing, you can find services to help you when you need it so you can focus on what you love most (and being more productive along the way).
  • Create an office space that works for you. Having an organized and fully equipped office space can help you accomplish more in your business. Make sure you have sufficient space, comfortable seating, and the technology to make your days run smoother. “After our printer died, I'd been putting off buying a new one. I finally ordered one from Office Depot, which has been a huge, huge help,” says Leeanna.
  • Use tech to streamline communication. There are various messaging tools to help you communicate with your employees, clients, and suppliers to keep track of conversations and tasks. “I use Basecamp to communicate with the people I work with because it gives us one central place to put everything,” says Leeanna. “That way I know everyone's seeing the most up to date things.”
  • Don’t reinvent the wheel. Finding a business community of like-minded entrepreneurs can bring a wealth of information that can help you move along more smoothly on your journey. “Connecting with other product-based businesses through Selfmade is so helpful when I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction,” says Leeanna. She’s able to get other opinions with the experience to back it up. “One of my friends from Selfmade suggested some other avenues to reach customers because she actually would be a customer but hadn't heard of the product. I asked her questions like, ‘How would I reach you with this? She had some really good ideas, which was really helpful.”
  • Get rest. A great night’s sleep, taking breaks throughout the day, and finding ways to recharge will make you a more productive human while avoiding burnout. “I'm one of those people who needs a lot of sleep to think clearly,” says Leeanna. “I've been trying to focus on making time during my day to do things to take care of myself, even if it's just to go for a walk between meetings or do a 10-minute yoga session, so I don't feel run down.”

In fact, entrepreneurs may be more at risk of burnout than traditional workers because they tend to be more passionate about their work while not having a lot of support. So take those breaks and get that sleep, because in the end, the experience is so rewarding. “I think everyone should try to be an entrepreneur,” says Leeanna. “You learn so much about yourself and it's really fun and empowering. Selfmade means I have the confidence to give this a try on my own and even though I found a really supportive group, I'm really proud that it's something that I'm doing.”

"A Family Affair" Is The Hilarious Summer Rom-Com You Can't Miss

I love sappy, sweet-as-candy rom-coms. You know, the ones where two leads spend the entire movie pursuing other people only to realize they were in love with each other the whole time. The movie usually takes place in a big city or a small town (and sometimes both), there's a quirky best friend, and there's always a big declaration of love before the credits roll. And while these straightforward movies are always on my watchlist, I also love the wacky movies that involve hilarious misunderstandings, ridiculous fight scenes, and gravity-defying Dirty Dancing movies (yes, I'm talking about Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling'sCrazy Stupid Love here). Humor always makes a movie even more enjoyable to watch, and A Family Affair is as wacky as they come. The movie reunites Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron, who played opposite each other ten years ago, and this time, Joey King's added into the mix. Like any good rom com, A Family Affair is all about a surprising romance — just not the kind Zara might be hoping for. And, just like you might expect when your boss and mother hook up, chaotic hilarity ensues.

Betting On Yourself: Finding Courage As A Creative Entrepreneur

Home decor and wellness creator Kelly Marcelo always wanted to be her own boss. “I never really wanted to have a job where I wouldn't be in control,” she says. She started a wedding photography business in college, added a photo booth rental business, and launched a t-shirt business with her brother. When the pandemic put events to a halt, she found herself at a crossroads. What to do next?

She decided to pour herself into her passion for home decor. She started posting several times a day on TikTok and finding a new outlet for her creativity. Within a few months, she had 10K followers, steadily built her following and hired a manager, and was recently chosen to decorate the White House for the holidays. “You have to ask that question, well, why not me?,” she says.

Don’t Wait for Perfection. In the first month of launch, Kelly’s goal was to post three times a day. “I was really trying to focus on getting as much out there at first, but then also being able to get that information to see what worked with people,” she recalls. That market research allowed her to build an audience, learn what her audience craved, and focus on the wins. “It was very intense at the beginning, and then I eased back. I'm like, ‘Okay, let me breathe, because it was not sustainable at all.’”

Refine and Strategize. To avoid burnout, she slowed her pace and stepped back to focus on the bigger picture. “I didn't pressure myself once I was on solid ground. I decided to focus more on refining the content, making it for the fun of it, and focusing on the strategy part.” Step back and analyze your learnings and decide how you want to move forward and grow.

Invest in Your Growth. Kelly joined a business accelerator for underrepresented creators in the middle of her journey that proved to be a smart strategic move. “I feel like that changed the whole course of where I am now, because once I was able to get support from them and talk to people directly after the program, that's when I got my biggest brand deal.”

Be Brave. “For me, it was recognizing that the fear was always going to be there,” says Kelly. “If you want to live a creative life, you're going to have to do something that's scary, and it's probably going to require steps that you don't want to take. For me, being on camera was very scary.” Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to take on moves that push your boundaries and help you develop new skills. Remember that being brave doesn't mean being fearless. It means acknowledging your fears but choosing to move forward despite them!

It's almost like history is repeating itself and it's hitting too close to home.

As Gonzalez alternates between both of their perspectives, Raquel and Anita's lives begin to intersect in a way that makes Anita de Monte Laughs Last the kind of novel that'll have you thinking about it longer after you finish the last page.

February 2024: "Redwood Court" by DéLana R.A. Dameron

Redwood Court reads like a historical love letter to Black families and contains relationships that remind me of my own family. When Mika Tabor starts asking questions about her family's history, she receives much more than her class assignment asked for. The more she listens to her grandparents and observes her parents, she realizes they've been telling her meaningful stories all along. From tales of racism to the sweet grasp of a world that began moving past obvious racial tension, this novel offers a glimpse into the homes of many Black families.

While I often say I'd like to pass down books to my kids, Redwood Court has become something that I feel is mandatory to read.

January 2024: "First Lie Wins" by Ashley Elston

Reese's Book Club is coming in hot with their first pick of the year! This thriller of a reader is all about "Evie Porter" and her separate identities. One paints the picture of who she truly is, but her job places her in the position of assuming a new name in order to complete the mission given to her by Mr. Smith. She's never met Mr. Smith, her boss, but she has the inkling that her latest mission hits a little too close to home.

December 2023: "Before We Were Innocent" by Ella Berman

As the scenario continues to repeat, Emma will have to dig deep inside herself to correct patterns she's been a part of her to save not only her husband but life as she knows it.

October Pick: "Starling House" by Alix E. Harrow

Starling House is a daring tale of what happens when dreams meet determination, grit and evil. All Opal wants to do is create a haven for herself and her brother Jasper but she'll have to fight for it once she finds herself in the mysterious mansion of author E. Starling. In the depths of the shadows, she'll come face to face with things that'll test her resilience.

September Pick: "Mother-Daughter Murder Night" by Nina Simon

When powerful matriarch Lana's granddaughter Jack becomes the prime suspect in an unsolved murder, Lana becomes determined to find a killer instead of waiting for her disease to have it's last say. Find out what Nina Simon has in store for the town the Rubicons find themselves living in.

August Pick: "Tom Lake" by Ann Patchett

Tom Lake weaves a beautiful tale of remembered love and viewing the humanity of one's parent. When Lara begins to regale her three daughters of a former romance she shared with actor Peter Duke at Tome Lake, they begin to take stock of what they know about their mom as well as their own love lives.

"Romantic Comedy" by Curtis Sittenfeld 

Heartbreak has the potential to make you swear off love, which is something that late night writer Sally Milz knows all too well.
