International Day of the Girl sounds like a fun time — ditch work, take the bra off, pump the music up and celebrate everything amazing about being a girl. Unfortunately, the day highlights the exact opposite. International Day of the Girl is a time set aside to examine the injustices that girls face all over the world, and to make a plan of action towards shifting that narrative and creating more opportunities for these girls to have a better future.

According to the United Nations, the day “aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights." There is a particular focus on the countries where child marriages are still performed.

This year, lifestyle accessory brand, MyTagalongs, is donating 50% of the proceeds from their Because I Am A Girl collection to Plan International’s Because I Am A Girl initiative — a program designed to change the narrative surrounding the value of girls.

Authier later found out the true meaning behind the statement was anything but empowering.

"We have committed to sponsor a girl for every MyTagalongs employee, and we have created the Because I Am A Girl Collection, which includes our best-selling items.”

The pattern on this collection is made up of women of different shapes, sizes and cultural backgrounds to represent unity in sisterhood. In the collection, you'll find a backpack, lunch tote, large cosmetic tote, earbud case, tech organizing pouch, and laptop sleeve.
