With summer in full swing, there are a few key trends we’ve noticed taking off: chokers, off-the-shoulder tops, slide shoes… we could go on. But it turns out the trendiest top of summer is actually an ode to a super minimal aesthetic — and it’s one that will make you channel your inner French girl even more. According to trend forecasting company WGSN, the number one trend of this summer is… stripes!
WGSN writes, “The stripe presence in tops grew 11 percentage point YOY [year over year] to 35% the w/e June 25, with simple tees growing in popularity, key for layering alongside new bright variations and resonating well with young consumers. Jailbird bands are a move-on from the Breton stripe.” FYI, a Breton stripe is that classic navy–inspired striped top you know and love.
The stripe has even taken over the other ultra-popular print of spring + summer: floral. WGSN writes, “During the first half of the year florals lost a six percentage point share YOY to 34 percent. And better still, full-price performance of the striped top has strengthened, up 20 percent.” Are all those busy, kitschy prints about to be replaced by this minimal + classic look? All signs (and stripes) are pointing to yes.
