9 Baby Names an Expert Would Recommend

Are there baby names that you suggest to every expectant friend? Maybe they’re baby names that you can’t use for one reason or another. Or maybe they’re baby names you might consider for a future child — assuming your friends don’t follow your suggestions first. In the Nameberry forums and blog posts, we all get to share those names. Can berries influence the popularity charts? As I watch names like Maisie and Emmeline re-enter the US top 1000, I think that maybe all of those conversations make a difference. If you’re disappointed that Ava is so popular, berries will help you debate the merits of potential substitutes like Ida, Ada and Avalon.

I’d love to know the names that you can’t stop recommending. I’ll go first! These are the names that I often find myself shortlisting when drafting suggestions for Ask the Name Sage posts — so much that I have to edit them out!

The nine names that I can’t stop recommending are:

1. Marguerite – Whenever I look at the US top 1000, there are always a few names that seem to be missing. Marguerite tops my list of conspicuously absent girl names. We’ve fallen for Madeline and Genevieve. Margaret is on the upswing, along with Margaret names Maisie and Margot. Back in the 1910s, Marguerite was a top-100 staple. How can this name be so far under the radar in 2015? It strikes me as a great fits-in, stands-out name for parents disappointed that Vivienne has zoomed up the popularity charts.

2. Esme – Emma is number one, but the equally literary Esme ranks a mere number 816 in the US. Some parents may be concerned that the vampire matriarch from the Twilight series is too strong of an association, but J.D. Salinger’s Esme is the enduring character. When parents want something nickname-proof that’s less common than Ella or Chloe, Esme always comes to mind.

3. Coco – Some names seem like nicknames only. Others stand on their own. Ever since Courteney Cox and David Arquette named their daughter just Coco in 2004, I’ve seen this name as both — and suggested it as both, too. It works with so many formal names, including Cosima, Cordelia and my current favorite, Constance.

4. Adair – Take Harper, Addison and Claire, and blend. Adair is the logical outcome — but far less common than any of those three. Adair is originally a Scottish surname related to Edgar. Back in the 1980s, the soap opera Search for Tomorrow featured an Adair. I think it works beautifully as a first name. In 2014, it was given to 35 girls, as well as 33 boys, making this an overlooked surname name that could wear well for a son or a daughter.

5. Rory – Speaking of names that work well for boys and girls, how about Rory? It could be a nickname for Gregory, Aurora or Marjorie. Unlike some of my go-tos, this real Irish name is catching on === again, for boys and girls alike.

6. Peter – Looking for a rock solid traditional boys’ name? Parents tend to go for William or Henry or James. But I nominate Peter. Between Parker, Pan and Pete’s Dragon, there are plenty of appealing associations for a boy with the name. Since it was a top 100 name in the US through the 1970s, Peter can be found on lots of family trees, too. But at number 204, it’s much less common than many a classic choice.

7. Arthur – Arthur has quite a bit in common with Peter. Arthur currently comes in at number 306 — a chilly ranking for a former top-100 staple. But unlike Peter, Arthur has edged his way up the popularity charts in the last few years. Courteney Cox’s character Jules shortlisted it for an imaginary child in Cougar Town, and Selma Blair gave the name to her son in 2011. As regal as Rory, as traditional as Peter — why not Arthur?

8. Everett – Everett might be the name I’m most guilty of over-recommending. But here’s the thing — we love Evelyn and Oliver and Everly and Elliot, so it stands to reason that we would love Everett, too. The name ranks number 167, up nearly 200 spaces in just five years. The name could easily crack the top 100 again — a place it occupied in the 1910s and 20s.

9. Tennyson – I’ve loved Tennyson ever since Russell Crowe gave the name to his younger son in 2006. Animated series Ben 10 features a boy named Ben Tennyson. Between the two references, I expected Tennyson to leap, just like Harrison, and it has reached a new high. There were 47 boys named Tennyson in 2014, which means this one is still among the rarest of boy names.

Once we saw her in Jumanji, we knew actress Kirsten Dunst would make us proud — especially as Torrance Shipman in the iconic cheer movie, Bring It On. She had us shouting, "Brrr, it's cold in here! There must be some Toros in the atmosphere" during recess...and now, if we're being honest! But, she wasn't the only person we had our eyes on.

There were so many '90s it girls who made an appearance in the movie that we couldn't help but wonder what the Bring It On cast has been up to since the movie premiered in 2000. Sigh...yes, it's been 23 years since Bring It On hit the big screen. ANYWAY, here's what your fave cheerleaders have been up to over the last two decades!

Kirsten Dunst made us believe that "cheer is life" with her portrayal of Torrance Shipman in Bring It On, but her acting credits didn't end there. She went on to star in the earlier Spiderman franchises, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Marie Antoinette, Hidden Figures, and more! During a video interview with Variety, she fondly talked about starring in Bring It On. She said, "We did extensive dance rehearsal which I loved. I was a cheerleader in 8th grade — that's why I did the movie." Although she was a base in middle school, she got to do a little bit of flying in the movie. She was nervous because her best friend broke her arm doing so, but it seems everything turned out just fine! The best thing she said is, "That movie was a surprise to all of us — the success. We were just off in San Diego...having fun."

In another recent interview with E!, she described where she thinks Torrance Shipman would be today. "Good question. Coaching, maybe," she said with a smile.

Her latest project is the upcoming film Civil War that's set to revolve around an erupting civil war in America. She plays Lee, a celebrated war photojournalist who travels to different cities to document what's going on.

Eliza Dushku — Missy Pantone

Before she was Missy Pantone in Bring It On, Eliza Dushku was in the film True Lies with Arnold Schwarznegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. She also starred in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, That 70's Show, Ugly Betty, and a slew of other movies. Although she hasn't been acting lately, she did produce Mapplethorpe in 2018 via her production company, Boston Diva Productions.

Jesse Bradford — Cliff Pantone

Did we have a crush on Jesse Bradford at one point? The correct answer is of course we did! Not only was he a part of the Bring It On cast, but he appeared in other fun teen movies like Cherry Falls with the late actress Brittany Murphy, Swimfan and Clockstoppers.

These days you can find him living his best life on Instagram.

Lindsay Sloane — Big Red

"Big Red" was played by none other than actress Lindsay Sloane. Her comedic timing has secured her spot as a comedian who's appeared in Nancy Drew, The Other Guys, and Horrible Bosses 1 and 2. Her last occurring role was as Judy on the updated version of The Wonder Years.

Gabrielle Union-Wade — Isis

Gabrielle Union-Wade has had a long acting career and has appeared in some of favorite coming-of-age movies. From being a part of the Bring It On cast to playing the lead character in Being Mary Jane, she's done more than make her mark in the entertainment industry. When she's not busy with family life, it's not unusual to see the actress secure brand partnerships.

Gabrielle's most recent appearance was at the 55th NAACP Image Awards with her husband Dwyane Wade on March 16.

Shamari Devoe — Lava

Shamari Devoe was one of Isis' right-hand girls in Bring It On, but she mostly known being the lead vocalist of former R&B group Blaque. She briefly appeared on season 11 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, but Yahoo reports she decided to part ways with the reality TV show.

She's married to Ronnie Devoe, a member of the R&B group New Edition, and they've appeared on Seasons 2 and 3 of Couples Retreat.

Natina Reed — Jenelope

Natina Reed was also among the Bring It On cast and was known for her melodic rapping in the girl group Blaque. However, she passed away in 2012 after being hit by a car. The Hollywood Reporter says she was attempting to cross the street.

Clare Kramer — Courtney

Clare Kramer may have played "Courtney" in Bring It On, but she was also known for playing the villain Glory on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She also was a part of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch cast! Her last role was Ms. Persephone in a movie called The Dead Ones.

Huntley Ritter — Les

Ah, good ole Les! We can't forget his memorable character in Bring It On. However, he's also had a role in The Wedding Planner and We Are Marshall. Nowadays, Huntley is the Co-President/CCO of STFRD (Strafford), marketing company based out California.

Dunst said in an interview with theLA Times, "We fell in love creatively first. He was like a creative soul mate to me and the way we both work. On Fargo I knew after two weeks. Scream 6 was one of the hottest movies of 2023, and we've been looking forward to Scream 7 since the credits started rolling! I'm super excited to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott, but it also looks like Friends star Courteney Cox is in talks to return to the slasher franchise, too. Here's everything we know about the new movie.

Is Scream 7 confirmed?

Image via Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Scream 7 is officially happening! After Scream 6 (which was released in March 2023) became the highest-grossing movie of the whole franchise, a sequel was announced in August of that year. Kevin Williamson, writer for the original 1996 Scream, will direct.

What year is Scream 7 coming out?

Image via Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

We don't have a Scream 7 release date yet, but given the fact Scream 6 was greenlit in February 2022 and hit theaters in March 2023, we could see Scream 7 in 2025. Scream 6 was such a fun spring movie because outside of Halloween season, anytime around summer feels like the perfect time for a scary movie!

Is Sidney going to be in Scream 7?

Image via Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Sidney Prescott will be in Scream 7! “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” franchise lead Neve Campbell says on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The actress was not involved in Scream 6 due to salary inequity. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream,'" she told Variety ahead of the sixth movie's release. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Who else is in the cast of Scream 7?

Image via Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

In addition to Neve Campbell, we could also reportedly see Courteney Cox reprise her role as Gale Weathers, via Variety. However, we won't see onscreen sisters Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega in Scream 7. It was announced in November 2023 that Melissa would no longer star in the franchise following her posts on the Isreal-Hamas war, while Jenna's absence has been attributed to Wednesday season 2 scheduling conflicts.

What is Scream 7 going to be about?

Image via Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

We don't have an official plot for Scream 7 quite yet, but I'm feeling confident we'll see Sidney Prescott and (hopefully) Gale Weathers take down another Ghostface. Scream 6 co-writer Guy Busick has the sole writing credit on this new script, as well as Melissa Barrera's 2024 movieAbigail.
