10 Over-the-Top Halloween Makeup Looks to Try This Year

With Halloween only a few days away, last-minute costume shopping may be on your radar this week. But don’t fret — even if you come up empty-handed, you can take the creative route by crafting a badass costume from scratch, like these Instababes did. With a little bit of makeup and a lot of patience, beauty mavens across the web have taken things into their own hands by creating next-level Halloween makeup looks. Whether you want to be Ursula from The Little Mermaid or a mythical unicorn, here are 10 OTT Halloween makeup looks to copy on October 31.

1. Deer: Oh deer, isn’t this look magical? Garnished with a few bedazzled gems and a messy top knot, this Bambi-approved Halloween getup is too cute for words.

2. Skeleton: Forgo the idea of being a flower crown Snapchat filter and opt for this pop-art skeleton instead. Bonus points if you go all out and dye your hair a unicorn-inspired lavender hue.

3. Ursula: You don’t have to steal the voice of a red-headed mermaid to achieve this beauty look, but you’ll need a long gray wig and neon green contacts. Join up with some friends for an epic group costume honoring the childhood fave.

4. Candy Corn: Candy is always good to eat, but we prefer to trick-or-treat as our favorite snack a la this artsy candy corn costume. Pair it with a yellow dress and a bold vampy lip to take this look to a whole new level.

5. Unicorn: As you probably already know, unicorns had a total moment this year. Embrace the trend by decking yourself out in bold pastels from head to toe. Don’t forget your glittery horn and a platinum blonde wig.

6. Katana: Everyone and their mom will be going as Harley Quinn from the Suicide Squad movie — so we say go as Katana instead. She’s a complete badass, knows how to wield a sword and isn’t afraid of ugly monsters. Rather than using a white mask, paint one on your forehead to recreate the comic book character.

7. Chucky: This disheveled Chucky will give you nightmares — and that’s the point. Match it with a pair of vintage overalls to perfect the childlike look.

8. Grim Reaper: To really get into the holiday spirit, opt for a menacing costume like this one. All you need is a long black hooded gown and a killer smokey eye.

9. Ice Cream: If you prefer to be sweet for Halloween, then this makeup-heavy costume is for you. Whether you choose mint chocolate chip, rocky road or OG vanilla, this costume will surely be a crowd-pleaser.

10. Liquid Skeleton: If you really want to take your Halloween game from basic to badass, you *have* to give this liquid skeleton look a shot. While this design looks complicated, we think it would totally be worth it!

Halloween is the time when all bets are off, and you’re not only allowed but encouraged to deck yourself out in any fashion! And we are always ready to kick off our Halloween costume-making run as early as possible here at B+C. Let’s keep it real: We love channeling our inner Wonder Woman, but pulling off a slightly gory costume like a zombie is a little more challenging. Here we’ve created an approachable zombie Halloween makeup tutorial so you can still feel like a babe while staying true to Halloween’s spooky vibe. Keep reading for the how-to.

How to Replicate This Babe-worthy Zombie Costume

Step 1: Zombie Halloween Makeup Prep

Apply a full-coverage foundation like Too Faced Born This Way Foundation ($45) that’s one to two shades lighter than your skin tone. This will help with that sallow, not so full-of-life look.

Step 2: Contour

First, contour the hollows of your cheeks, temples, around your hairline, down into your jawline, and your neck using a neutral bronzer like NU Evolution Bronzer in Portofino ($38), then go over these spots with a deep gray shadow to add that cold, deadly vibe.

Step 3: Start Zombie Eyes

Contour: Use a fluffy shadow brush to apply a deep charcoal shadow to the inside and outside corners of your eyes.

Blood Base: Apply a red eyeshadow to the center of your eyelids, along your under-eye areas, and up into your temples.

Highlight and Deepen: Add a silver shimmer to your brow bones and a deep black to the crease underneath your eyes.

Step 4: Back to Your Base

Now apply Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation ($42) to the t-zone of your face with a flat foundation brush to brighten and give more dimension to your overall look.

Step 5: Start Bite Wound

Contour: Apply the same charcoal shadow around the corners and lower lip.

Wound Prep: Apply Mehron Spirit Gum ($13) to the center of your lip, extending above and below your upper and lower lip line. Let this dry for around 2-5 minutes.

Step 6: Add Veins To Your Zombie Halloween Makeup

While the spirit gum dries, move on and apply Ben Nye Créme Colors in Gray ($8) with a very fine-pointed paintbrush along your forehead to create veins. Apply Ben Nye Créme Colors in Fresh Cut ($8) in random places over the gray to give a more realistic finish.

Step 7: Complete Bite Wound

Apply Ben Nye Créme Colors in Red ($8) over the spirit gum you applied to your lip before. Mix in a little maroon and black to take the look to the next level.

Finishing Touches

Start off by applying white squiggle lines similar to the veins on your forehead coming out of your eyes to get the base and shape right.

Now, using a variation of the gray, maroon, red, and black créme colors, create the depth in all the veins coming out of your eyes. Apply a little mascara and deepen your brows if needed. You can really elevate this look by adding a pair of light gray contacts like we put on Kristina!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
