Why Layering Eyeliner Will Be Your New Favorite Makeup Hack
You probably already have your daily eyeliner routine down pat — maybe it consists of a swipe of black liquid liner or adding on a taupe-y brown to accentuate the color of your eyes. But what about when your look could use a little extra oomph without looking too dramatic? You can add a few falsies to fluff up your lashes, apply a pop of metallic eyeshadow to make your eyes look bigger (and blingy-er) or you could layer up on your eyeliner. Think: just like you’d add an extra layer of clothing to your outfit when temps begin to dip. It’s a look we first spotted at Fashion Week that plays up your eyes big time, and it turns out that off the runway, it’s actually shockingly simple to do.
You might already use various shades of black, brown or gray as eyeliner for your top lash line — if that’s the case, you already have step 1 down! Then, all you’ll need to do is choose a complementary color that you will apply on top of your first line of black, brown or gray to add depth. Consider using a deep eggplant, navy, forest green or even a metallic silver or bronze for step 2. Once you’ve chosen your color, simply use it to draw a line directly on top of your initial eyeliner. Just make sure you have a steady hand and that you don’t over-extend either line. You can switch this look up depending on the occasion, so here are some fall color combos to get you started.
For a Desk-to-Dinner Catchup: Layer Black + Eggplant Purple Eyeliner
Line your eyes with a black gel liner to start the day. Then, swipe on a deep purple after you’re done with work and headed to happy hour. That small addition of dark color will give your makeup just the little update it needs to be happy hour-approved.
Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink ($25) + Wet n Wild MegaLiner Liquid Eyeliner in Plum ($3)
For Date Night: Layer Brown + Midnight Blue Eyeliner
Consider using a deep brown as your lash-line-hugging liner shade. Add some dark blue on top — it looks a lot like black when applied but it gives your look just a bit of color and oomph, which is perfect when your date is staring longingly into your eyes ;)
Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner in Dark Brown ($22) + Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Sabbath ($20)
For a Holiday Party: Charcoal + Metallic Eyeliner
A rich charcoal color against your lash line is a great start for this look. Add a *little bit* of holiday shimmer to your eyes by adding a slightly metallic gold or silver above your dark liner — this is perfect for a holiday party because it won’t distract from the rest of your look but will definitely add a fun touch.
Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Smooth Charcoal ($8) + L’Oreal Paris Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner in Gold ($8)
For a Fun Night Out: Taupe + Teal Eyeliner
A subtlyshimmery taupe will bring out the sparkle in your eyes. Go big or go home with this one! Use a thin line of a bright teal, hot pink or punchy orange on top of the initial dark liner you have on. This is a super fun look that will be eye-catching and easy to switch up depending on what color you’re feeling.
