With Taylor Swift dropping her new single tonight and Katy Perry releasing a new video today for 鈥Swish Swish,鈥 you can鈥檛 blame fans for thinking that the two formerly feuding singers might use this weekend鈥檚 VMAs (which Perry is hosting, FYI) to finally bury the hatchet. In recent weeks, there鈥檚 been speculation (or perhaps just wishful thinking) about a surprise duet at the MTV event. But one of the show鈥檚 producers just dashed that dream (for now).

鈥淭hat鈥檚 not happening, as far as [I know],鈥 Garrett English told Entertainment Tonight. He added that the buzz hasn鈥檛 gone unnoticed by the people behind the scenes, but as far as he knows, the buzz is still just a fantasy. 鈥淚鈥檝e certainly seen all the rumors flying around, but that鈥檚 not happening.鈥

Of course, even if there were plans for a duet between the superstars, it鈥檚 unlikely that a producer would confirm it and spoil the surprise. So there鈥檚 (a tiny bit of) hope.

Fans are still pretty convinced it鈥檚 happening:

Swift鈥檚 last appearance at the VMAs was in 2015, when she (temporarily, it turned out) ended another feud 鈥 with Kanye West. The rapper, who infamously interrupted Swift鈥檚 acceptance speech for Video of the Year in 2009 to declare that Beyonc茅 had one of the best videos of all time, received the Video Vanguard Award in 2015, and Swift was on hand to present it to him. At the time, she joked, 鈥淚鈥檓 really happy for you and I鈥檓ma let you finish, but Kanye has had one of the greatest careers of all time!鈥

We鈥檒l just have to watch to see what happens when the 2017 VMAs air this Sunday, August 27.
