Stephen King’s Most Terrifying Survival Thriller Is Finally Getting a Movie Adaptation

There's a brand new Stephen King movie on the way, and if you love everything from It to The Long Walk, then you won't want to miss The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. When people think of Stephen King stories, their minds usually jump to the horror genre. But as an avid King fan who has read nearly half his books, I consider him less of a horror writer and more of a psychological storyteller. His best stories are the ones that dig deep into a character’s psyche, and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a prime example of this. Let's break down the new story so you have the full scoop before the movie premieres.
Here's everything you need to know about Stephen King's new movie The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
What is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon By Stephen King About?
What I love about Stephen King’s stories is that they’re always painstakingly original. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is one of those books that feels completely unique, since it explores territory that we’ve never seen before. Essentially, the novel centers around a 9-year-old girl named Tricia who is on a hiking trip with her preoccupied family members. In an unfortunate turn of events, Tricia ends up lost in the woods and is faced with the terror of trying to find her way out. It’s dark, cold, eerie, and there are strange sounds coming from the darkness that leave her in a state of ice-cold terror. Such isolation would be terrifying for anyone, but especially a person as young as Tricia.
Fortunately, though, Tricia has a big imagination, and she’s able to use it as a source of both comfort and guidance as she attempts to navigate her way out. Being the massive Boston Red Sox fan that she is, she worships Tom Gordon, who played for the team as a pitcher from 1996-1999 (the book was released in ‘99). In her quest to find her way back home out of the woods, where she’s being hunted by a terrifying unknown source, she envisions her favorite baseball star by her side as he helps her along the way.
Stephen King Is Thrilled About The Upcoming Movie Adaptation of His 1999 Novel
The king of horror is no stranger to film adaptations of his popular books. In fact, some of the biggest movies of the 20th as well as the 21st century have been adaptations of King’s novels. The Shining, Misery, Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, and It Chapters 1 and 2 instantly spring to mind.
While it has been well over two decades since the book release of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, this will be the first movie adaptation of the novel. “I’m thrilled that my book is being brought to the screen,” King revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. And JT Mollner will write and direct.
"JT is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman told THR. “Throughout his work, he creates characters, and especially young characters, that are so compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional that they pop off the screen. And of course, that’s what Stephen King does on the page as well. The story of survival and perseverance in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is timeless. We’ve loved this tale for a long time, and JT is the perfect choice to adapt and direct this King fan favorite.”
