12 Inspirational Baby Names to Celebrate Black History Month

In our previous salutes to Black History Month, we’ve looked back to Civil Rights and cultural heroes and other barrier breakers of the past. Today, instead, we’re focusing on the present — the history that’s being made right now with diversity breakthroughs via the increased numbers of this year’s nominees and winners of various screen awards, with many more people of color making the lists than ever before. These include not just actors but directors, producers, writers and musicians.

Here are some of the more outstanding names.

1. August (Wilson):The late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, born Frederick August Kittel, Jr., wrote both the play and screenplay for Fences, which won him a posthumous Oscar nom. August is by far the most popular month name for boys, now at Number 195, and a celebrity favorite.

2.Ava (DuVernay): Ava DuVernay has won several past awards and is the first black woman nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, for her film 13th. Glamour girl name Ava, promoted via its use by such celebs as Reese Witherspoon and Hugh Jackson, has been a massive hit, in the Top 10 since 2005 and now the fourth most popular name in the US. 3. Courtney (B. Vance): Courtney B. Vance won a SAG award for his portrayal of defense counsel Johnnie Cochran in the TV movie The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The name Courtney was predominantly male when Vance was born in 1960, ranking at #724; it left the boys’ list in 2001, after peaking at 254 in 1977. The girls took it over in the 1970s; it was a Top 100 female name from 1976 to 2002, in the Top 20 for several of those years.

4. Denzel (Washington): After receiving the Cecil B. De Mille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Golden Globes, previous Oscar-winner Washington got the SAG Award for best actor this year for Fences. Denzel Hayes Washington is a name he inherited from his father — Denzel being an old Cornish name that reached #310 in 1993, largely inspired by the iconic actor.

5. Issa (Rae): Issa Rae was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress on a TV series for her work in Insecure, based on her breakout web series Awkward Black Girl. She was born Jo–Issa Rae Diop: Jo–Issa being a combo of her grandmothers’ names, Joyce and Isseu, and Rae is after an aunt. Issa is an Arabic name that is currently popular in France, where it ranks at #275.

6. Mahershala (Ali): For his performance in Moonlight, Mahershala was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe and won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor. And if 10 letters seems like a lotta name, consider that he was actually born Mahershalalhashbaz, after a biblical character.

7. Naomie (Harris):British actress Harris received numerous nominations for her powerful performance in Moonlight. Her name is a distinctive spelling of the Biblical Naomi, but she was born Naami, a variation of the Hebrew Naamah, meaning sweetness, beautiful and borne by one of the wives of King Solomon.

8. Octavia (Spencer): This previous Oscar winner also received Academy Award, Golden Globe and SAG nominations this year for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as mathematician Dorothy Vaughn in Hidden Figures. She has been bringing attention to her historic Latin name, which also appears in The Hunger Games. The elegant Octavia is #143 on Nameberry.

9. Pharrell (Williams): The prolific and versatile all-around music and more entrepreneur got a 2017 Oscar nomination as one of the producers of Hidden Figures. His name, which may relate to that of his father, Pharaoh Williams, is pronounced Fa-RELL, not Farrell. The father of a son named Rocket, he and his wife recently welcomed triplets.

10. Sterling (K. Brown): Sterling K. Brown won an Emmy and a SAG award for playing Christopher Darden in The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. As a Jr., Brown was known as a child by his middle name, Kelby, but when his father died, he began using Sterling in his honor. The silvery name Sterling has been rising rapidly — it’s now at Number 495, perhaps influenced by the title character Sterling Archer on Archer.

11. Taraji (P. Henson):Taraji P. Henson won a SAG award as one of the cast members of Hidden Figures, and she gave an inspiring speech about unity. She has also won a Critics’ Choice Award, a Golden Globe and an Oscar and received two Emmy nominations. Taraji is a Swahili name meaning “hope” and is likely to inspire other parents to use it. 12. Viola (Davis): Viola Davis won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress for Fences and is nominated for an Oscar in the same category, after already winning a Golden Globe. Following in the wake of Violet’s popularity, the musical, Shakespearean Viola is seeing something of a resurgence: She’s Number 319 on Nameberry, though is yet to rank nationally.

Williston, up 1000 Percent: Not just an oil town in North Dakota, this fresh take on William is taking the maternity ward by storm. Willis (as in) is also up there with a 36 percent rise in July.

Flavio, up 702 Percent: This Latin name for "yellow" or "blond" is gracing birth certificates of blondie babes across the U.S.

Massey, up 603 Percent: This unisex name is on the rise for girls and boys. You could also mix it up with variants like Massie, Masey, and Masie.

Messiah, up 301 Percent: This bold name is trending for girls and means "expected savior or deliverer." Basketball star Allen Iverson likely started the trend with his little one.

Rosaria, up 218 Percent: The Spanish name for "rosary" is trending hard and we like it for a twist on the classic Rose.

Cricket, up 168 Percent: This unisex name is becoming hugely popular for boys. We like it for babes with summer birthdays!

Callen, up 90 Percent: This unisex Gaelic name is trending for girls and means "rock." Yay for strong girl names!

Bruin, up 90 Percent: Whether you're a sports or nature fan this name could be for you. Of English/Dutch origin, the name means "bear or brown." Bear as a boy's name is also up, thanks to celeb moms Alicia Silverstone and Kate Winslet, who both have Bear cubs.

Sabien, up 87 Percent: Move over Damien, there's a new baby name in town. You can also go for the French variation Sabin for a tres chic twist.

Falcon, up 81 Percent: Give your bird a cool name like Falcon and who knows how far she'll soar. Eagle is also up (61 percent) for boys and girls.

Rani, up 81 Percent: For boys, Rani means "my song, my joy" and for girls it means "queen, she is singing." Cute for your little dancing queen!

Lyrical, up 81 Percent: More than 1,000 girls and boys are named "Lyric" each year in the U.S., but this longer musical number is topping the charts this month.

Bas, up 76 Percent: Consistently in the top 10 in the Netherlands, this cool twist on Sebastian is trending for boys in the U.S.

Gem, up 66 Percent: Meaning "precious stone," this shorter version of Gemma is looking strong for short and sweet baby names.

Rorke, up 66 Percent: Meaning "illustrious and mighty" this Irish name is having a 2020 moment and we're loving it.

7 Temporary Hair Color Trends To Experiment With This Summer

Festival season is here and summer is shortly on its way, so and to me that signals that it's time to get funky with your hairchoices! Whether it be some fun braids ornew cuts, you can try them all! But my personal favorite has to be dying your hair.... temporarily of course! Growing up I've never taken the plunge and fully dyed my hair, but I always loved to play around with temporary dye as a way to feel the fun change...but not dye my hair pink forever on a late night whim (I would not advise anyone to try this — we all saw what happened in that Gilmore Girlsepisode). So if you're getting that drastic decision itch but don't want to fully take the plunge then we'd recommend these fun styles that the experts say you'll love!

How long does temporary hair dye last?

Temporary hair dye should only last a week or a couple weeks at max depending on how often you wash your hair. On the Sally Beauty website, it says, "Temporary hair color does not penetrate the cortex or the hair. Instead, it coats the outside of the hair shaft with color that washes out in one or two shampoos." So just a couple of washes and there you have it; your hair is as good as new!

Licorice Red

This is one of the most popular styles at the moment with so many celebrities donning this style. One of my favorites has to be Dua Lipa with this shade of bright licorice red that looks fab on her! I would recommend this color if you have darker undertones because it would compliment the red in such a beautiful way. Hair expert and colorist, Andrea Cottin from The Hairstyle Review, says, "If you’re looking to change up your hair without commitment, temporary color can be an excellent option. One of my favorite brands is Good Dye Young who carries a product called “I’m Bored” and lasts 2-6 washes. To apply, simply emulsify and apply to freshly washed hair in sections and then blow dry." It't that simple!

Andrea also says, "It comes in lots of colors and my personal favorite is pink as it has been trending in the salon. Another option is by Brite. It’s 100% compostable, and gentle on your hair. It’s applied like a conditioning mask and lasts 5-30 washes. This might be a better choice for those who want a bit more longevity without committing to a permanent color." You heard it here first, folks! Pink is going to be the color of the season!

Did you know that if you're in a pinch and can't make it to the salon for a root touch-up that you can get temporary dye to fix up your roots? You just spray directly onto your roots for a nice touch-up to get a natural look like Lucy Hale above! This is a new development for me as I'm just finding out that you can dye your hair rose gold! Don't mind me sprinting to Ulta ASAP to grab the Kristen Ess Rose Gold Tinting Spray. The biggest baby name trends of 2019 include names from new sources around the world and in nature, trends reflecting modern spirituality and nonbinary ideals, an F and a U, and a goodbye to a longtime favorite group. Here are Nameberry’s predictions for the 12 leading trends shaping baby names in 2019, along with name examples for each trend.

1. Biggest Big Picture Trend – Global Names: As the world gets smaller, the pool of names becomes larger, with new names from ever-more-diverse origins entering the global lexicon. At Nameberry we’ve added thousands of new names from around the world: Maori names and Xhosa names, ancient Greek names and South American Indian names, Korean names and Israeli names. With the appetite for meaningful and unique names expanding all the time, parents are looking for original choices with deep roots.

Example names: Acacius, Aroha, Cyrene, Jedda, Kiran, Lautaro, Lior, Niabi, Sena, Walken

4. Coolest New Color Names – Muted Hues: All color names for babies are, well, colorful, but we’re beginning to see a shift in tone as vibrant shades like Scarlett and Ruby and Poppy are giving way to softer pastels. Grey/Gray is starting to replace Blue as a first and middle color name du jour, while popular Violet has been joined by other vintage pale purplish hues. 6. And then there’s the whole Family Fran, which started to take off after the election to the papacy of Pope Francis and led to the revival of several surprising half-forgotten Fran names. Fashion-forward names starting with F include the following.

8. Coolest Vowel – U: U finally gets its turn in the spotlight this year. As a first initial, U is the least-used letter of the alphabet, and it hasn’t featured in any major baby name trends in… forever. But now u — and its “oo” sound — features in many newly stylish names. Is it the influence of little Prince Louis? His unexpected name may have simply upshifted the trend to major.

9. Trendiest Name Length – Three Letters: Four letters might be a marker of name popularity, a la Number 1 Emma and Liam, but minimalist three-letter names are the sleek, sweet names of the future.

Example names: Hal, Ida, Jem, Kit, Koa, Liv, Lux, Rex, Rio, Van

10. Wildest Middle Name Trend – Animalia: Parents who want to add a touch of fierceness or individuality to more conventional first name choices are turning to the animal kingdom for the wild vibe. As in many other trends, celebs have led the way, starting with Mariel Hemingway’s daughter Langley Fox back in 1989 to the number of more recent starbabies bearing Bear as their middle name.

11. Trendiest Trend-Related Trend – Celebrity Surname-Names: Celebrities have influenced baby names since the days of Shirley Temple, and surname-names such as Morgan and Carter have been rising since the conservative 1980s. Now those two trends have combined into one megatrend: Celebrity surnames for baby girls and boys. Goodbye, Shirley; hello, Temple.

12. Trend Ready to Jump the Shark – Em- Names: We predict that baby namers are about to become all Emmed-out when it comes to baby names in 2019. After all, we had Emily in the Top 25 for 35 years, at #1 for 12 of them. Then came Emma, in the Top 25 since 1998, and still reigning in first place. A number of dueling Em- names followed in their wake, and we predict that the consensus is about to be that enough Em is enough.

Turning 21 is one of the first big milestones of adulthood. It's the age you finally become legal and it seems to cement the fact that you're officially out of your teens. One of the best birthday trip ideas I think makes this age so special is taking a road trip with your besties.

I have a few fond memories of traveling to Panama City Beach, FL with one of my best friends during my early twenties that stick out more than our random club nights. You get to cement your bond with a fun early 2000s playlistfull of everyone from Kelly Clarkson to Gwen Stefani!

Go Glamping Over A Long Weekend

What do you get when you mix a little glam with camping; glamping. This works if you want to be close to nature without feeling like you've a part of a lost episode of Fear Factor. Instead, you'll have the option of lodging in airstreams, barns, cabins, and more.

Visit NYC For The First Time

I didn't go to NYC for the first time until I was 23, but it's still a core memory that I love to revisit. I definitely a typical tourist taking in all the sights and amazing food, but it was so much fun. I initially stayed in Manhattan the first time I went, but later visited Queens, SoHo, and Brooklyn.

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco first collaborated on the song "I Can't Get Enough" along with Tainy and J. Balvin in 2019. Though they were featured in a cute scene together, there weren't any rumors about them being romantically linked then.

August 2023

They didn't work together again until late summer 2023 when he produced Selena's single "Single Soon" with Cashmere Cat.

December 2023

Before 2023 ended, Selena started leaving comments on Instagram that suggested she and Benny Blanco were in fact together. One of the comments she left appear on this Instagram fan page and it reads, "He is my absolute everything in my heart."

Some fans weren't so thrilled to see the two together though and they weren't afraid to express their opinions. But, this only prompted Selena to leave more comments that defended her relationship with Benny.

People grabbed a screenshot of one of the comments Selena responded that revealed the couple had been together for a while. "Not mad. It’s been 6 months bb. I will always defend my friends, family and fans till the day I die," she wrote. They even shared another screenshot from Selena's Instagram Story that showed her wearing a "B" ring on one of her fingers.

December 15, 2023

Soon after that, Selena shared a photo carousel on Instagram that included some of her favorite moments in New York and Benny Blanco can be seen in BTS moments. The last picture of the carousel features them sharing a kiss in a black and white photo that basically confirms the responses the singer had for fans.
