The Top 3 Cleaning Mistakes You’re Making — And How to Fix Them

Spring is in the air, and that means warmer temps (gotta happen sometime, right?), longer days, and yes, cleaning. But if you think your regular ole routine will cut it, think again. Those products and techniques could actually be causing more harm than good. Find out which mistakes you’re making and how to fix them below, all with the help of Shannon Lenox, a scientist with all-natural cleaning product gurus Seventh Generation.

1. You think a clean-smelling home is a clean home. Just because your home smells clean doesn’t mean it is. In fact, the same cleaning products and solutions that smell so good could actually be bad for you and your family. “American consumers have been conditioned to equate heavy scents with cleanliness, when really, truly clean spaces should actually smell like nothing at all,” Lenox told Brit + Co. Lenox pointed to a two-decade-longinternational study that found women with regular exposure to cleaning products may face a steeper decline in lung function over time. (And it didn’t matter whether they were just cleaning at home or were employed as professional cleaners.) But since never cleaning the bathroom again isn’t realllly a viable option, Lenox says consumers should protect themselves by selecting products with care, and by making sure they’re doing their cleaning in well-ventilated spaces.

2. You don’t read the labels. If the last time you read the instructions on the bottle of your cleaning products was 10 past never, you might want to get reacquainted. “A mistake people make is not carefully reading the directions on how to use a product,” Lenox says — for example, failing to rinse off a cleaner that needs to go, or cutting down another product’ efficiency by not letting it sit. From wasted product to wasted time to potential dangers, there can be consequences for you and your stuff when you use your cleaners the wrong way. Make you read the label to determine not only what’s in the products you’re using, but how to use them.

3. You try to do it all. Sometimes that cleaning bug bites hard, and you set out ready to tackle every nook and cranny. Smash cut to 4 hours later, when you’re exhausted, sitting in chaos, and nothing is cleaner. Lenox recommends keeping your goals reasonable and reap the benefit of a lower stress level AND a cleaner house. “Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be miserable, and it doesn’t have to be done all at once,” she says. “As a busy mom, I know my home is too much to tackle in one day. Make a list of the areas in your home that need the most work and focus on those rooms for just 20 minutes a day over the course of your week. Checking off your list as you go will keep you on-task and make you feel accomplished.” She offered the following tips for getting the job done:

  • Look for the hidden moments in your daily routine. While you’re brushing your teeth, give the sink or mirror a quick wipe down. There’s one more thing to cross off your list.
  • Put your vacuum to WORK. “My vacuum is my favorite dusting tool,” Lenox says. Use yours to clean lampshades and baseboards.
  • Kill two birds with one stone and repurpose that ratty old toothbrush as a scrubber. This is a great way to give a second life to something that would otherwise find its way into the landfill.
  • Get yourself a cleaning tote. By keeping everything you need to clean in a ready-to-go basket, you won’t waste precious time tracking down your supplies in every room.

The most important thing to focus on when organizing your kitchen cabinets is maximizing space. That just means making the most of the space that you have, because no matter how big your cabinets are, if they're filled to the brim with items that don't have a dedicated spot, it's going to feel cluttered.

Focus on keeping similar items together, using up vertical space by stacking where you're able (like with bowls or glasses) and making sure that every object has a dedicated space.

Use your cabinets to hold more than just kitchenware — display books and plants to bring some personality into your kitchen. You don't have to save all the fun for your bedroom and living room!

If you live in a small apartment, or just don't have cabinets, you can still take part in the fun. Use the space above your sink or your countertop to add your own shelves. This is a great option because when you're doing it yourself, you can customize the storage to your needs.

Okay, so this one isn't technically cabinet organization, but it will definitely save you room in your cabinets. DIY this wine rack that will move your wine bottles from your cabinets onto the wall and add color to your room at the same time.

The Home Edit's organization tips are totally inspiring thanks to their efficiency and their color. Grabbing bins from somewhere like The Container Store or Target can help you contain your products so they don't end up spread across your shelf, and they also make it easier to stack your items since they won't fall over.

Don't underestimate the power of labels. When you buy your bins, tubs, and other organizers, write what you intend to store inside on all the containers and make sure that the corresponding product is always inside. That way, you'll have one bin of flour instead of multiple half-empty bags. Plus, it just looks prettier!

For a quick update on the system you already have, stack your plates so that like plates are together, with the biggest plates are on the bottom — this will ensure they sit together in a way that takes up the least amount of room.

Make sure all the rims of your glasses are touching when storing them in your cabinets, and when you're organizing mugs, face the handles toward each other so there's less empty space and more room for new mugs. Because let's be honest, we can always buy new mugs.

A Beautiful Mess

Trisha Okubo (pictured center) started out as a Stanford engineer but always had a passion for fashion, sculpture and architecture. Rachel and Jiyoon Han, Founders of Bean & Bean Coffee

A daughter of South Asian immigrants, Farah Jesani started her career in NYC's corporate world. It’s a happy day when we get to put away our sweaters and jackets and pull out our sundresses and sandals for warmer weather, which (we swear) is just around the corner. Organizing your closet can seem like a daunting task, but creating a simple system for success can make it manageable and even enjoyable. When you start each morning by opening your closet and see the picture perfect image of organization, you know you’re going to have a good day. Not only does it look good, but it makes getting ready so, so much easier. We talked to THE queen of organization, Jill Pollack, who runs a whole business helping women get organized. Here’s what she told us.

Hack 1: Keep your staples front and center

“People always ask me, ‘what’s your system?’ But it’s different for everyone,” Pollack says. “Do you think a skirt is casual? Do you wear more color or neutrals? For many people, their work and going out attire overlap.” Pollack recommends that instead of sectioning your closet into work clothes, going-out clothes and the like, think in simple terms and keep your staple items in front so they are easy to find. “Black tie clothes are for a rare occasion, so stick them in the back of your closet or a whole other closet all together.”

Hack 2: Don't be overly sentimental

You must learn to let go of those items you are never going to wear, like the jeans you keep thinking you’ll fit into someday or the t-shirt that you wouldn’t be caught dead in but reminds you of freshman year of college. “If you haven’t worn it in over a year and your weight and lifestyle have stayed pretty much the same, pass on it,” Pollack says. Other items Pollack says you need to chuck — anything irrevocably stained, not worth repairing, clothes you’ve tried on at least three times this year and rejected and items that make you feel unattractive.

Hack 3: Store seasonal items cleanly and neatly

Pollack says the best way to keep your clothes in good shape when you are going to go months without wearing them is by first making sure they are clean, neatly folding them and sticking them in a cedar chest.

Hack 4: Create a system for shoes based on your closet size

Unless you have a shoe organization system set in place, your shoes are going to end up in a big heap on your closet floor. “If you have room for shelves, I like putting shoes there, at eye level,” Pollack says. “If you have a lot of closet floor space, I like double and triple shoe racks. But a hanging shoe rack works too.”

A family affair refers to a situation that's connected to someone's family in one way or another. For me, being an adult has been all about establishing work-life balance, and I'm sure the same is true for Zara. I can't wait to see how this movie's unexpected romance turns everything upside down.

Before they were cast in A Family Affair, Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman played lovers in The Paperboy in 2012. Familiarity and comfort are two super important things in any romantic role, and I can already tell from these first look images that Zac and Nicole not only have awesome chemistry, but they're comfortable enough around each other to just have fun. And that's all we can ask for from a good movie!
