Here’s How the (Disastrous) Dirty Dancing Remake Differed from the Classic Story

There were plenty of reasons why fans felt personally offended by ABC’s Dirty Dancing remake, and boy-oh-boy did they ever let their LIT opinions be known. Between Baby’s dancing and the complete lack of chemistry within the cast, it was pretty darn cringe-worthy for plenty of reasons. And that includes the many ways the remake attempted to take the tale further and differ from the classic story.

First, there was a handful of minor changes that didn’t alter the overall story in any real way, but were still totally noticeable to hardcore fans. The entire agreement between Baby and Johnny was slightly changed so that the more experienced male dancer offered Baby lessons in exchange for her help. And not only does Johnny insist on paying Dr. Houseman back for his services in the end, but the good doc demands that the creepo Robbie give Penny money to cover her abortion.

There were a few other little changes too, like Baby jumping off the dock for the famous water lift (what was that about?!) and the fact that Vivian was divorced and not having a sneaky, cheat-y affair with Johnny, while also forming a friendship with Baby’s mom, Marjorie Houseman (played by Debra Messing).

But one minor change brought about one of the bigger deviations in the story: the fact that Majorie was given more of a storyline. By giving her character more depth, we watched as the unhappy housewife considered a divorce, telling her husband, “I’d rather be alone than lonely.” Whoa. While the two manage to reach a happy ending, it was certainly something that didn’t play out in the original film.

Another relationship that was handled completely differently was the one with Baby’s sister Lisa and the aforementioned creepazoid, Robbie. While the classic movie saw Lisa contemplating losing her virginity to the seemingly perfect yet IRL arse, the new version ditched Robbie in favor of an interracial crush between Lisa and Marco, a musician in the in-house band who teaches the Houseman sibling how to play the ukulele. Cute! While it was one of the twists we’d been told about beforehand, their scenes helped to bring about the next change: more music.

While there were plenty of beloved tunes in the original movie, the cast themselves didn’t burst into song (other than Baby and Johnny’s adorable lip-synching and Lisa’s vicious Hawaiian-themed nightmare, natch). The remake changed that with Katey Sagal taking on “Fever” (perfect for the sexy Vivian), as well as Debra Messing surprising fans by belting out “They Can’t Take That Away.” When the two main characters started singing “I’ve Had the Time of My Life,” there really wasn’t much more to say about this cringey remake.

Or so we thought!

That’s when the remake knocked us over with the biggest change of all: The Ending.

Taking us past that blissful summer, 12 years down the road, we see Baby watching Dirty Dancing on Broadway in 1975. Johnny has choreographed the show based on the book Baby wrote about their summer love (yep, this definitely sounds more like a daydream we all had as preteens when contemplating the characters’ futures, not an actually Hollywood-like production!). While there’s still a spark between them (or so we’re supposed to believe), that’s right when Baby’s daughter and husband, Charlie, come in, making it clear that Johnny and Baby didn’t end up together. Boo! That may be a realistic take on the story *if* it were to continue, but maybe that’s exactly why the original movie ended when and where it did.

While it’s clear ABC was attempting a fresh take on the beloved story, it seems like this is a clear example of how things shouldn’t be redone when they managed to reach perfection the first time around.

When I think of modern American royalty my brain IMMEDIATELY goes to Zendaya. The Euphoria actress and fashion icon constantly makes headlines, whether she admits her dream vacation is bedrotting with Harry Potter or she wears a literal tennis ball on her red carpet gown. She always carries herself with grace, sophistication, and class — which is why her rumored role in Denis Villeneuve's Cleopatra movie is PERFECT.

Villeneuve confirmed on September 10 that in addition to Dune: Messiah, Cleopatra is in the works. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, and Z's potential involvement.

Is Zendaya starring in a Cleopatra movie?

While we haven't gotten an official cast for the new Cleopatra movie, Zendaya is rumored to star as the titular queen, along with her Dune costar Timothée Chalamet and Knives Out's Daniel Craig. Craig is rumored to play Julius Caeser, Cleopatra's ally and lover, while Chalamet is rumored to play Octavian, Caesar's adopted son and Cleopatra's rival.

While Zendaya definitely has the acting chops to play the historical figure, some internet users are unsure about the casting. "I like Zendaya, but she doesn't look Greek," one user tweeted, while another (very enthusiastically) said, "WE NEED GREEK ACTOR COME ON NOW!!!!"

Stay tuned for the official Cleopatra casting news.

What is the new Cleopatra movie about?

Villeneuve hasn't confirmed the exact movie plot yet, but there are plenty of moments in Cleopatra's life to include. The incredibly intelligent queen was part of the Ptolemaic line of rulers, and according to History Cooperative, she was actually the first Ptolemaic Pharaoh to learn Egyptian.

It's unclear whether we'll also see Mark Antony (another relative of Caeser's) in the Cleopatra movie, or if the story will end before their introduction.

In real life, Antony and Cleopatra started a relationship, but political unrest and a rivalry with Octavian led to the War of Actium in 32 BC, around the time they got married. And if you ask me, what happened next makes a very intriguing movie ending: the Roman Senate declared war on Cleopatra (and Antony once he sided with her). And in 30 BC, rather than give themselves up to Octavian, the couple ended their lives and the War of Actium led to Rome taking over Egypt, and Octavian becoming Rome's first Emperor Caesar Augustus.

I could totally see the Cleopatra movie ending similarly to Dune 2: with our leading lady facing an impossible choice, staring out into the distance, unsure of what the future holds. And an ending like that would be even more impactful because we know what comes next.

Whether you deal with acute or chronic inflammation, treating your body with some extra TLC via what you consume can really help soothe (and decrease) your symptoms. In addition to an anti-inflammatory diet, the unsung hero of fighting inflammation is tea! Teas are often packed with ingredients that tackle signs of inflammation. Keep reading to discover the best varieties for your needs.

What is inflammation?

Polina Tankilevitch / PEXELS

“At its simplest, inflammation is a protective response by the body. When the immune system detects an invader or an injury, the immune system, various blood proteins, and the cardiovascular system react to eliminate the problem,” says Stephanie Dunne, MS, RDN, IFNCP at Nutrition Q.E.D. “In other words, inflammation is a response to something harmful or damaged in the body.”

Symptomatically, inflammation can show up in numerous ways, including fever, sore throat, bruising and swelling, fatigue, mood swings, body aches, headaches, skin disorders, decreased thyroid function, and irregular bowel movements, to name a few.

What causes inflammation?

Kampus Production / PEXELS

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic. According to Dunne, acute inflammation is most commonly caused by an “invader or injury.” Acute inflammation sets in quicker than chronic inflammation, often presenting within minutes or hours. Causes of acute inflammation can include physical injury, infections, and hypersensitivities like allergic reactions.

“Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is much harder to identify and resolve,” says Dunne. “Chronic inflammation sets in slowly, sometimes taking months or years to take hold, and the signs are more subtle, less specific, and systemic.”

Causes of chronic inflammation include prolonged exposure to toxins, persistent infections, smoking, heavy alcohol use, over-exercising, chronic use of certain medications, and consuming foods that damage the digestive tract.

The lasting effects of chronic inflammation are much more severe than that of acute inflammation, too. Many conditions like Alzheimer's Disease, ADHD, autoimmune disease, diabetes, and depression have been linked in part to chronic inflammation.

How can I treat inflammation?

Julia Sakelli / PEXELS

According to Varsha Khatri, RDN at Prowise Healthcare, modifying your plans for your diet, exercise, rest, and stress management can help decrease chronic inflammation. Dietary changes are a great place to start.

“The introduction of foods containing anti-inflammatory nutrients and the exclusion of pro-inflammatory foods, for instance, processed sugar and trans fats, is essential,” she says.

In addition to anti-inflammatory foods, drinking teas for inflammation is an easy way to keep you feeling your best in the day-to-day. Below, find the best teas our experts recommend for fighting inflammation!

Tazo Green Tea

Drinking green tea consistently can not only help decrease inflammation, but improve your cardiovascular health and metabolism, which can reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases.

The contents of green tea, such as catechins with EGCG, have been confirmed to alleviate and protect tissue from damage owing to inflammation," says Khatri. "These substances also serve as free radical scavengers and fight the chronic inflammatory status."

Amazon

Traditional Medicinals Organic Ginger Tea

Ginger is rich in gingerol, which can help reduce general swelling (including arthritis and sore muscles) and relieve an array of digestive issues. It's also pretty tasty, too, so you can enjoy sipping it any time.

Amazon

52USA Rooibos Organic Tea

"Rooibos tea has antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin which are present in plants and rooibos, and are believed to have anti-inflammatory effects," says Khatri. "Such antioxidants can mitigate the activity of pro-inflammatory substances and therefore, chronic inflammatory diseases may be effectively managed."

Amazon

Yogi Comforting Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is one of the best teas for inflammation to drink before bed. It has relaxing and soothing effects, thanks to apigenin, which primarily tackles inflammation in the gut. If you deal with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other digestive disorders, you'll find some nice relief from drinking chamomile tea.
