This Lisa Frank-Inspired Holiday Party Is Every ’80s and ’90s Kid’s Dream Come True

Are you still searching for a fun way to get your friends together and celebrate the holidays? Then check out this Lisa Frank-inspired holiday party, complete with hot pink leopard print invites, googly-eye cookies and the sweetest pink Christmas tree you ever did see! There’s a little bit for everyone to keep the party going in the most colorful and festive way. Scroll to see all the gorgeous decorations, DIYs and throwback-inspired ideas.

This holiday party inspo started with visions of all things hot pink, purple and teal and couldn’t have been possible without my amazing vendor team who really helped bring this shoot to life. The first addition to the team? Mikkel of Mikkel Paige Photography, who shares my love of all things colorful and quirky like no other. Check out her amazing shots below and see how you can host your very own Lisa Frank-inspired holiday party.

1. Trimming the Tree, Lisa Frank-Style

Wondering where to start? With a pink Christmas tree, of course! To honor the Lisa Frank color palette, we chose ornaments that were bright pink, lime green, aqua, purple and royal blue, with a healthy dose of sparkle. Pair that with kitschy items like shooting stars and unicorns, top it off with a glittery gold star and you’ll have the perfect tribute to the queen of color.

The Flatiron Penthouse proved to be the perfect backdrop for the shoot, as it allowed us to put together a party that could legitimately be hosted in your own living room. Our goal was to create something not just Pinterest-worthy, but also realistically achievable at home.

2. Creating a Holiday Tablescape

Kristen Poissant created a stunningly styled mantel and tablescape, featuring the perfect mix of bright colors, sequins and tinsel. The foundation for the table was a purple sequin linen from Nuage Designs, complemented by simple white plates with Nuage’s fuchsia napkins. We lined the table with mini trees, adorned with acrylic ornaments from California Lustre, and finished the tabletop with tinsel, custom unicorn confetti from The Confetti Bar and a few fun animals.

The leopard print menus and rainbow escort cards from Arobesque Design Studio made for fun details for the table.

3. More Lisa Frank-Inspired Paper Goods

Arobesque Design Studio took Lisa Frank to a whole new level of sophistication with a fun and sparkly invitation suite, along with adorable gift tags and custom wrapping paper designs.

4. Lisa Frank-Inspired Cocktails

No party would be complete without its own signature cocktail, so JPO Concepts created the Frosty Unicorn in an array of colors, topped off with a blue sugar rim and drink stirrer from California Lustre. The Frosty Unicorn is equal parts sweet treat and boozy indulgence.

5. Magical Holiday Cookie Decorating

The highlight of the day had to be the private cookie lesson by Sweet Dani B, who instructed everyone on decorating curly cue candy canes, googly-eye rainbows, topsy turvy Christmas trees and that elusive narwhal.

Not only were the cookies delicious, but some of them also double as ornaments (which you can then snack on after the holidays are over).

6. Holiday Gift Exchange

Gift giving and receiving is awesome, but nothing beats a perfectly prepared package wrapped in custom paper with a sparkly laser cut name tag on top. These beauties are *almost* too pretty to rip open!

For the shoot, each of the models was gifted a fun and playful necklace from Gunner and Lux‘s Little Lux line of jewelry. You too can rock a panda, zebra or rainbow star.

As an event planner, one of the best perks of the job is having a network of friends and vendors who can help bring your (sometimes silly and ridiculous) visions to life. All of this Lisa Frank goodness would not have been possible without the help of all of the talented folks below. Sending all my best wishes to them and to YOU for the holidays!

This article has been updated from a previous post.

I'd like to consider myself a romantic person in every aspect of life. I'm constantly coming up with stories, putting ribbons in my hair, and literally stopping to smell the roses (what can I say, when you see a flower in New York City, you might as well savor it). Needless to say, Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays. Aside from the fact that it provides a brief burst of color in the bleak midwinter, it is also a reminder that no matter how tough life gets, love is always worth celebrating. There's just one catch: I have been single my whole life, which makes the constant stream of date night ideas and partner gift inspo that flood the internet this time of year feel like they're a touch out of reach.

Valentine's Day can be less than thrilling if you feel like you don't have anyone to spend it with, but take it from me: there are more than enough ways to have a great time riding solo. If you've recently gone through a breakup or you're the only single friend left in your group, here's my best advice on tackling the upcoming love season if you're single on Valentine's Day (with a little help from Dr. Jenny Taitz, author of How To Be Single And Happy).

Whether or not we admit it, there's definitely still a stigma around singleness. "Despite the fact that these days we may not need a partner to fulfill our hopes, being single remains so stigmatized, with shows depicting the need to compete to win love and headlines depicting women who are single as in an unfortunate situation," Dr. Taitz says. "It’s key to be mindful of these unhelpful messages to [keep them] from impacting how we view ourselves."

I've been on a couple dates as an adult, but I often feel like I've missed out on a lot of the foundational experiences that come with being a young woman. Not to mention that it's easier than I'd like to admit to feel like there's something wrong with me if I'm the common thread through every dead-end romantic situation.

Even if comments from your friends like "They're just not good enough for you" or "You're so independent" have good intentions, not feeling desired is hard. Sometimes you just need to process those emotions in whatever way works best for your wellbeing because singleness is incredibly complex — one day I'm enjoying eating at a restaurant alone, the next a rom-com makes me cry — and as easy as it is to swing between the extremes of total happiness to bitterness, the reality is that I'm usually somewhere in between.

"Days like Valentine’s Day can be incredible opportunities to practice self-validation and self-compassion," Taitz says. "Being single on a day that can pull you to compare or feel less than is a good time to be especially kind to yourself [and act] in ways that remind you that you are enough and don’t need a plus one to feel whole."

Activities that engage your soul will help you feel good *and* romanticize self-care at the same time. I love creating a vision board in my bullet journal to see my dreams on paper, or reminding myself of where my true worth lies. If you're really struggling with feeling lonely, Taitz recommends listing out the areas of your life that matter to you, then writing down the value you want to add to each and mapping out how and why those values matter.

"There’s no way a relationship can be your full sense of worth — that’s not fair to you or the relationship and that’s not accurate in terms of what we know about happiness," she says. "Happiness hinges on being present and engaging in positive actions and having fulfilling relationships — and coupling isn’t the only source of connection (assuming it is almost like limiting your diet to strawberries — it’s not going to fill you and will deplete you)."

There is so much more to my worth than whether I have a romantic partner: I love movies and books, I love talking to my little sister on the phone, and I can spend hours happily in the kitchen listening to music and making a nourishing dinner. There's much more to your worth, too.

My mother constantly reminds me to wait for Mr. Right, not Mr. Right Now. There are pros and cons to every phase of life, and I'm very content with the pros right now. Eventually, however, I'm hoping my Valentine's Day charcuterie board for one will become a board for two.

  • 2 lbs beef Tenderloin center cut canon (ask your butcher)
  • 1-2 T Avocado Oil for searing
  • 8oz shallots, minced
  • 1 lb Mushrooms, cremini or button, minced
  • 6 T butter
  • 1 t thyme leaves
  • 1 T minced Parsley
  • Salt and Pepper TT
  • Pastry Dough x 2:
  • Bread Flour 1 1/2 cups plus 1 T
  • Butter 3/4 cup (6oz) cubed
  • Salt 1/2 t
  • Ice cold water 1/4 cup

  • Slice off a 2 lb center cut canon from a beef tenderloin or ask your butcher.
  • Pat dry, season heavily with salt and pepper. sear on all sides using a fat with a high smoke point (Avocado oil)
  • Tip: Precooking your beef is the secret to preventing a soggy bottom crust and most of the moisture is removed prior. This will also ensure that your tenderloin is cooked perfect every time.
  • Roast in a 150 oven to an internal temp of 115. Chill
  • TIP: I like to measure my canon lengthwise side to side then the circumference by using butchers twine. This will help me determine the size I need to make my prosciutto bed and pastry sheet.
  • Make your mushroom duxelles. Saute half a pound of minced shallots in 6 T butter then add 1 lb finely chopped mushrooms and thyme, saute, deglaze with sherry wine as necessary, cook until pan is dry, add minced parsley, season and set aside.
  • Add flour and butter to a counter top mixer and using a paddle, combine on lowest speed until the butter is turned into crumbs and all the flour is Incorporated. Pour in your ice water and mix until combined. Place dough onto the counter and form into a ball then flatten/ wrap with plastic wrap and chill.

Diversity in design brings unique perspectives that only drive the industry forward, making it more innovative, forward-thinking, creative and bold. Yet only 2.3 percent of interior designers are Black, according to data from the job search company Zippia. Orgs like the Black Interior Designers Network have put their energy toward amplifying marginalized design voices and have helped uplift Black designers in media, books, magazines, blogs, and TV – and we are grateful for it. Personally, as a passionate decor enthusiast and writer on the topic, I discovered several designers through the network and have been inspired by their unique points of view ever since. Here are 17 lessons we learned from some of our favorite Black interior designers, none of whom fit a mold but instead dare to break it with every design they create.

Lesson #1: Trust Your Instincts

Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "My client had an unbelievable art collection that I needed to put to work! When it comes to extremely unique pieces that are bold and almost whisper stories to you while viewing it, I want the space to be equally as interesting. This historic West Hollywood home was truly a match made from above with wooden ceilings, french doors, and stone floors that balanced the gallery that was about to fill it. Photo by @douglasfriedman"

We can sometimes love a bold idea but are afraid to make the investment on taking a chance. What I found and what I learned from many of these designers is that the boldest ideas are often the best ideas so Trust. Your. Instincts! In my own home, my favorite design choices are the ones where I didn't follow what I saw on social or what was trending but what truly gave me a creative spark.

Tiffany Brooks HGTV’d on Instagram: "I sat down and had an idea and I turned it into reality ✨ SWIPE ➡️ To see my original rendering 🖊 🎨 How do you think it came out? • • • • #ChicagoInteriorDesigner #TiffanyBrooksInteriors #InteriorDesigner #CelebrityInteriorDesigner #DesignIdeas #HGTVDesignStar #HGTVHost #chicagointeriordecorator #blackgirlmagic #hgtv #supportsmallbusinesses #HGTVHost #photoshoot #explorepage #renovation #photography #instagood #picoftheday #trending #worklife #workingmom #trending #fyp #design #beforeandafter #custom"

The Expert on Instagram: "“Brigette was so incredible!,” says @theexpert client Hannah D. “Decorating a new home felt like such stress and she made me feel confident and excited again. She is very intuitive, all her ideas were exactly what I was dreaming of before I even realized it. She instantly understood my taste, and we accomplished so much in just one hour!” Who wouldn’t want to pick the brain of one of LA’s most sought-after interior designers? @brigetteromanek’s client list includes @gwynethpaltrow, Beyoncé, and Joe Jonas to name a few. Her wildly imaginative style and mix-master skills translate into rooms that are fresh, functional, and will inspire for years to come—and you can ask her all your burning decor-related questions too! Book your own one-hour consultation with Brigette by tapping the link in bio. 📸 @yoshihiromakino"

FORBES MASTERS | INTERIOR DESIGN on Instagram: ":: GO BOLD :: Maybe on your walls or throw pillows but what about your sofa or chair? Adding a large pattern to an upholstered piece is the ultimate bold choice. Are you into it? We chose a large houndstooth fabric for this @mgbwhome media lounger and it proved to be everything we imagined and more. • • • #largeprint #largepattern #fabrics #upholstery #design #decor #interiordesign #atlantadesigner #interiordesigners #gobold"

Lesson #2: Flaws Are Beautiful And Worthy

Justinablakeneyhome🌞 on Instagram: "Our Love Me Some Me art print is a daily reminder about loving ones-self and that even flaws (flawed art, flawed people) are beautiful and worthy ✨"

Love this lesson from Jungalow creator Justina Blakeney – perfection is so overrated. Imperfections in art, which interior design really is, are what make it beautiful and unique.

Lesson # 3: Layering In What You Love Can Lead To Happy Accidents

danielle colding on Instagram: "This was such an accidental color palette. Sometimes palettes just build from the ground up. Bed, then nightstands, then pillows, and done. I remember being bowled over by the light fixtures and thrilled to feature my friend @jlagarrigue artwork above the bed to tie it all together. I wish I could say there's a formula to successful interiors...but so much of design consists of back to back happy accidents. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo by @brittanyambridge #dcdny #interiordesign #colorpalette #bedroomdecor #artlove #lightfixtures #blueandorange"

"Sometimes palettes just build from the ground up. Bed, then nightstands, then pillows, and done. Lesson #4: People Are The Key To Good Design

Tavia Forbes on Instagram: "Designing for real people with real budgets"

Design is about people, right? It's all about how you will use the space and how it will make you and the ones you love feel in it. What kind of experiences do you want to create through your design?

"Some of our clients have a younger family and need maximum storage and space for everyone. Other clients are in their forever home and want to focus on an aging in place type of design. My first step in design is to find out what clients' needs are and present a design that makes their home life better than before they hired me, " says April Gandy, Founder and Principal Designer, Alluring Designs Chicago.

Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "The dining room at the Isle project. I'm really proud of how my custom dining table design came out. I can't wait to see the family's first dinner party settings in this space. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"

Love this idea from celeb designer Brigette Romanek to bring in lounge sofas around a dining table – we want to be invited to that dinner party, so cozy yet elegant!

Lesson #5: Corners Create Opportunities

Tiffany Brooks HGTV’d on Instagram: "Don’t forget your smallest corners .. It’s the best opportunity to add something special 🤩 • • • #HGTVSmartHome #ChicagoInteriorDesigner #TiffanyBrooksInteriors #InteriorDesigner #CelebrityInteriorDesigner #DesignIdeas #HGTVDesignStar #HGTVHost #blackgirlmagic #supportsmallbusinesses #smarthome #instagood #picoftheday #designinspiration #explorepage #explore #trending #ad100 #housebeautiful #phillipjeffries"

The smallest spaces can be the most fun to design because you can make an impact with a smaller budget and less time commitment. Make them shine with wallpaper, bold art, vintage furniture or anything personalized.

Sherrell Design Studio on Instagram: "“There is always LIGHT, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.” -Amanda Gorman, The Hill We Climb ~ An artist’s studio for the artist in her | Fairfield Falls II Project. @sherrelldesignstudio 📸: @madelineharperphoto"

"A thoughtfully designed space can dramatically improve the lives of the people who live in it," says Texas-based designer Sherrell Neal. "I love layering color, texture, and light combinations that achieve timeless and livable interiors. For 2023, I'm using more bold paint colors and wallpaper on the 5th wall (ceiling)!"

Lesson #6: Make It Warm + Cozy But Unconventional Too

Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "This is your sign to not sacrifice comfort for design… Some may think that in order to have a beautiful space there will be compromises made in terms of functionality and comfortability. The drama! I know that having a warm and cozy space will make me feel happy in a room which is a primary focus of mine if I am going to be spending a lot of time in it. What do you prioritize in your spaces? Photo by @douglasfriedman"

The warm and cozy part serves the people living in the space while the unconventional part serves your creative soul.

Justina Blakeney on Instagram: "I love designing because it’s such a fun mix of intuitive and calculated. So much of what happens in the process unfolds in the moment, with experimentation and improvisation and just feeling into what makes the space sing. It’s really is like music to me—the high notes, the low notes, the rhythms, the chorus, the bridge, all the different elements coming together to create harmony. Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "I feel so blue... I loved putting together this dining room for my clients at my Los Feliz project, clients who trusted the process and allowed me to flesh out some of my more unconventional ideas. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photographed by.... @tylerjhogan"

Lesson #7: Use Color Strategically For Bigger Impact

Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "Don't be afraid of that bright pop of color! The pink piece is such a dimensional part of this room. I can't imagine the space without it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ photograph by @michaelcliffordphotography from @houseandgardensa cover shoot"

The neutral trend is lovely but a pop of color surprises and delights. Color is everything in these designs.

Me and General Design | Architectural Interior Design on Instagram: "When pop of color works in a fresh new way! Try something new today and see what happens! 💫💫💫 #badassdesign"

𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐬 on Instagram: "𝐏𝐔𝐑𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐍: I was listening to some classic Prince online this morning, and his 1980s hit “Purple Rain” ☔️ reminded me of my own affinity for this rich, jewel tone color. Often used to denote royalty, purple has such a wide range of hues, from lavender and violet, to aubergine and merlot. And it makes for quite the bold statement, especially when it’s applied judiciously in interior design and architecture. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Back on July 30th, I posted here about commissioning all the interior doors of my clients’ American Colonial Revival manse to be lacquered a deep purple color. That post led to many inquiries and curious DMs. 😜 So for all of my IG friends here, yes, I 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 did do that, and here’s a close up shot from the foyer! ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Collin’s Dictionary defines the term “whimsical” as ‘unusual, playful, and unpredictable, rather than serious and practical’. Traditional interior design is known for being formal. Likewise, this space is designed to be elegant, but we didn’t want the home to take itself too seriously. 😉 I love taking the classic Trad decorating genre and giving it an 𝘶𝘯𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 twist!—CDJ⁣⁣💜 ⁣⁣ #designremix ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣"

Lesson #8: Make It Wild But Serene

Justinablakeneyhome🌞 on Instagram: "Wild, but make it serene #justinablakeneyhome"

So much of design is about balance. Sure, you can bring in a tropical wallpaper with a bold tile and mix in some gold accents and colorful art but balancing the color and tone and texture of the space is key to not being too extra.

Lesson #9: Elegance + Drama = Intrigue

Brigette Romanek on Instagram: "The intrigue...a hallway view of the powder room at Isle project. #interiordesign #romanekdesignstudio 📷 @michaelcliffordphotography"

That lamp, the tile, the wall treatment, oh my swoon!

Lesson #10: Play!

MONET MASTERS on Instagram: "// CHILDREN OVER THIRTY // So thrilled to share our cabana space titled “Children over thirty”. Thrilled to be a part and amongst such brilliant designers. If there is any lesson you can take away from this @forbesmasters design is that it's all about having fun with it. If you feel good about it you'll bring that energy to a space too.

Lesson #11: Enhance Architectural Details With Paint

Tiffany Brooks HGTV’d on Instagram: "I love using paint to enhance architectural details!! 🤩🎨 And everyone has been asking so I had to let you all know. Love how HGTV designer Tiffany Brooks uses paint to highlight the molding here.

Lesson #12: Metallics Make Neutrals Pop

danielle colding on Instagram: "Some metallic pops bring this neutral guest bedroom to life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo by @patrickclinephotography #dcdny #interiordesign #guestbedroom #bedroomdecor"

They really do in this gorgeous bedroom designed by Colding.

Lesson # 13: You Can Never Have Too Much Art

Justinablakeneyhome🌞 on Instagram: "You can never have too much art! 🎨👩🏾‍🎨💅🏾🖌#jungalow"

Art completes a space and adds a bit of soul -- share art you love and your space will feel like you.

Sheila Bridges on Instagram: "Hard to believe it was just a few weeks ago that I was in Iceland to receive delivery of a new painting by Icelandic artist @julohaf. She was working on a series of “green ladies” (celebrating the nude female body without it being objectified or sexualized) when I visited her art studio in Reykjavik. So happy I stumbled onto her work. 💗💚#art #travel #throwbackthursday #painting #pinkandgreen #fridayflashback #design #home #artlover #oilpainting #interiors #interiordesign #homeawayfromhome #sheilabridges #harlemtoilegirl #designer"

Samuel & Sons on Instagram: "Celebrated New York designer, Sheila Bridges (@harlemtoilegirl), recently sat down with us to speak about her design inspirations, her philosophy on creating the feeling of home, and her favorite holiday tradition. Lesson #14: Have A Clear Point Of View

Justina Blakeney on Instagram: "People often tell me that @TheJungalow is a strong brand with a clear point of view. I have a lot of fun thinking about branding and brand recognition and so I thought I’d share an exercise I do periodically to help get clear on how to make my brand stand out from the crowd. 💡 Think deeply about how your brand engages with the five senses: 👁️ 🤚🏽 What does your brand look and feel like? For example, if you were to have a home, shop, or hotel that exemplified your brand, imagine what it would look and feel like when you first walk in. What colors do you see? Warm? Cool? What type of furnishings? Curvy or angular? Velvety or linen-y? Vintage or new? Modern or rustic? Patterned or solid? What kind of weather matches your brand? Warm and sunny? Snow? Autumn breezes? 👅 What does your brand taste like? Tropical fruit? Mashed potatoes? A sunny side up egg? 👃 What does your smell like? Vanilla? Sage? Cedar wood? Jasmine? The beach? Spaghetti? 👂 What does your brand sound like? Brazilian Jazz? R&B? Ocean waves? Children playing? Honing in on how your brand engages with the senses is a great exercise you can do to get to know your brand more intimately—and once you are super clear on this, you can weave your vision into all aspects of your brand—from colors and font choices, to tone and the types of products or services to offer. Photo of my very jungalicious Lanai, a space that exemplifies @thejungalow brand, by @jennapeffley for @archdigest 💗🙌🏽🌞🌿"

Blakeney's branding tips can apply to any design – you want consistency and a clear direction to get a cohesive look.

Lesson #15: Every Moment Is A Chance To Show Up

Ceilings too can create a moment.

Lesson #16: Heritage Details Create A Sense of Place

danielle colding on Instagram: "Consignment store dressers meet childhood bedroom Degas, meet my mom's elephant planter and my fave lamp bought at a design showroom sample sale! This dresser vignette is like a road map through my life...So many special meaningful items paired with things I was able to purchase as an adult. My Bed Stuy apartment was such a place of healing after the death of my mother. Spaces can truly be a refuge during trying times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #dcdny #interiordesign #consignmentfinds #vignettestyling #specialmemories ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"

Colding perfectly articulates why having heirlooms and nostalgic items bring a sense of soul to a place. "This dresser vignette is like a road map through my life...So many special meaningful items paired with things I was able to purchase as an adult. My Bed Stuy apartment was such a place of healing after the death of my mother. Spaces can truly be a refuge during trying times," she says in her post.

Lesson #17: Support small, minority-owned businesses.

"I’ve learned I do a better job of staging a space once I can see it put together in person instead of having it all figured out before we get started," says Gandy. "I have also enjoyed meeting and partnering with new local small businesses, especially minority owned businesses. It gives me a sense of pride to know I’m contributing to their success," which brings us to our final lesson #17: Shop small. Finding unique pieces you won't find in mass quantities will inspire a space that feels personal, special, and one-of-a-kind.
