Stop What You’re Doing and Read This Open Letter from Celebs (Beyoncé Included) About Gender Equality

Yesterday was International Women’s Day, and women everywhere took a stand for equality with their actions, signs, and clothing choices. Celebs also got in on the action, with plenty posting on social media: Hilary Swank even invited women to share their stories to be featured on her website.

Another group of celebs, however, including Queen Bey and Madonna, banded together in a different way with an open letter to women everywhere. The letter was a call to action to join them in the fight against gender equality and take a stand once and for all with Global Citizen, a social action platform fighting for women and extreme poverty.

“This is about hearing a call — to join us wherever you are. About raising an alarm — drawing attention where there is work to be done. And about celebrating — those who are already showing us, against impossible odds, what is possible,” the letter read.

Published by Chime for Change, which was founded by Gucci and co-founded by Beyoncé Carter Knowles and Salma Hayek, the letter was stacked with celebrity support: In addition to Knowles and Hayek, it also had signatures from the members of Coldplay, Dakota Johnson, John Legend, Madonna, Freida Pinto, Julia Roberts, and Jada Pinkett Smith, to name a few.

The letter pointed out the threats to girls and women’s rights in today’s society, and sought to gain members in its efforts to reset the balance of power. “All over the world, women are on the frontlines, fighting for our future,” it reads. “Yet millions of girls and women are still denied basic equal rights. And recent policies and appointments in the United State jeopardize its position as a global leader and a positive role model on human rights.”

It was far from defeatist, however, leaving readers with an inspired feeling to aid in their battle. “We believe that connection empowers us,” it says. “That every voice matters. That each one of us is needed to achieve change. We believe we can do extraordinary things when we come together. We fight for education. For health. For justice. For every girl. Every woman. Everywhere. We fight for our future. Because none of us can move forward if half of us are held back.”

What better day than today, International Women's Day, to support women who are breaking boundaries and sharing stories?! Pop some popcorn, snuggle up in a blanket, and watch some of the incredible talent working to make our media more inclusive, diverse, and, frankly, entertaining, than ever before. Netflix is a perfect one-stop shop for a broad selection of inspiring movies and television series, so let's dig in.

Becoming

Courtesy of Netflix

Directed by Nadia Hallren, this documentary is partly based on the book by the same name. It follows First Lady Michelle Obama on her 34-city book tour and shows some of her work while she was in office, and provides a deeper look into her life.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Courtesy of John Wilson/Netflix

This whodunit is perfect for anyone who wants to travel abroad this summer, but in addition to enough mystery to go around, Glass Onion is actually a really empowering International Women's Day movie. All the women in this movie are standouts, but it's really Janelle Monáe's Andi that makes the biggest impression.

Ginny & Georgia

Courtesy of Netflix

This mom-and-daughter duo may seem like the new Gilmore Girls, but they're more than meets the eye. Created by Sarah Lampert, Ginny & Georgia shows these women taking control of their lives and we love any story that focuses on a mom and daughter relationship. Catch up on the first two seasons before Ginny & Georgia season 3 premieres!

To All The Boys I've Loved Before

Courtesy of Netflix

Things change for Lara Jean Covey when her five secret love letters are mailed out. The To All The Boys trilogy (based on the books by Jenny Han) is great if you're a sucker for snappy one-liners and John Hughes references, and the Covey sisters' relationships are just as great as the romantic ones.

Jane the Virgin

Image via The CW

International Women's Day is all about celebrating womanhood, and our ability to create our own destiny. What better Netflix show to watch than Jane the Virgin, which features Gina Rodriguez' Jane *literally* writing her own story? This series is heartfelt, romantic, and outright hilarious.

GLOW

Courtesy of Netflix

And if you haven't given the ladies of GLOW (created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch) a go yet, you should know it's not just a triumphant look at the real-life women of the professional wrestling world of the '80s — it also happens to be just a ton of butt-kicking fun.

Mudbound

Courtesy of Netflix

Mudbound is directed by Dee Rees, the first Black woman to be nominated for best adapted screenplay at the Oscars. It also boasts the work of cinematographer Rachel Morrison, the first woman ever nominated for best cinematography at the Oscars.

Feel the Beat

Courtesy of Netflix

Directed by Elissa Down and Produced by Susan Cartsonis, Feel the Beat revolves around April, who leaves NYC after an embarrassing audition video goes viral. She starts instructing the local dance team, hoping they'll get a chance to compete in front of Broadway legend Welly Wong. What follows is pure, heartwarming goodness that makes this a perfect International Women's Day movie.

Self Made

Courtesy of Netflix

Based by A'Lelia Bundles' On Her Own Ground, this limited series stars Octavia Spencer as Madam C.J. Walker, who revolutionized Black haircare and became the first Black, female, self-made millionaire. This one's for the period drama lovers!

Do Revenge

Courtesy of Kim Simms/Netflix

This Netflix movie is campy, candy-colored, and filled to the brim with '90s references. It also centers female experiences and relationships, which makes it a great International Women's Day pick.

Queen Charlotte

Courtesy of Liam Daniel/Netflix

Remind your friends that they're royalty (not to mention yourself!) by binging Queen Charlotte on Netflix. The Bridgerton prequel follows the titular queen as she marries the future King George and changes the course of society forever.

Once summer rolls around, strawberries take center stage, which means strawberry desserts are the highlight of the season. From classics like strawberry shortcake to innovative creations like strawberry s’mores, these 32 strawberry desserts push the boundaries of that fruity, juicy flavor we all know and love. Get ready to indulge!

Strawberry Freakshakes

Think of this recipe as your traditional strawberry milkshake, but leveled-up beyond compare. The "freak" label for these decadent shakes is entirely accurate, as they get loaded with sugar, ice cream, donuts, whipped cream, and of course, rainbow sprinkles. (via Brit + Co)

Strawberry Donuts

These strawberry donuts earn a healthy (or well, healthier) edge by using whole wheat flour, coconut oil, and Greek yogurt. Don't worry though – they're still as sweet as ever, and they'll be super tasty alongside some coffee for a nice morning treat! (via Brit + Co)

Strawberry Tart

This tart looks impressive, but it's not all that hard to execute. Get your hands on just 5 ingredients – store-bought pastry dough and custard help expedite the process – and you'll be well on your way to strawberry, dessert-y goodness. (via Brit + Co)

Strawberry Chia Oatmeal Cookies

Turns out, you can eat cookies for breakfast! These strawberry-filled lil' bites serve as a quick power-up with fruit, oats, and chia seeds. You can even pack a few in your lunchbox for a healthy mid-day snack sesh. (via Brit + Co)

Boozy Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

These skewered strawberry desserts would make a fun Friday night activity to share with your boo! Simply soak some fresh berries in pink champagne overnight, then assemble them onto skewers before dipping them right into a dark chocolate bath and garnishing with more chocolate and crushed pistachios! (via Brit + Co)

Strawberry Lemon Cookies

Strawberries and lemons are a match made in flavor heaven, and these easy cookies (they only take 20 minutes) deliver a strawberry lemonade-type taste. Summer, here we come! (via The Edgy Veg)

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is an absolute classic! This recipe makes a few simple swaps (like whole wheat flour instead of regular, and maple syrup instead of white sugar) to make each and every bite a tad bit lighter than your traditional take. (via Whole and Heavenly Oven)

You haven't lived until you've tried putting fresh strawberries on your s'mores. Just look at that gooey goodness! (via Feel Good Foodie)

The crunchy coating on these strawberry shortcake-inspired ice cream bars is exactly why you need to make them this summer. It's comprised of brown Rice Krispie pieces and freeze-dried strawberries to add some variety in texture, and wow, is it delicious! (via Half Baked Harvest)

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Rhubarb makes an excellent partner to strawberries. Case in point: this no-frills, uber-fresh pie with an impressive lattice crust! (via Completely Delicious)

Strawberry Cocoa

This sip is like if you combined a strawberry shake and hot chocolate into one. It's so dreamy! (via Two Peas & Their Pod)

These strawberry fudge bites are just perfect for a little Valentine's Day dessert. This recipe surely doesn't shy away from sugar! (via Where Is My Spoon?)

Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Matcha Madeleines

Strawberry Cake Mix Brownies

Strawberry cake mix makes these strawberry desserts so much quicker, but they don't skimp on flavor at all. If you want to take things up a notch, try adding some fresh strawberries on top! (via Kathryn's Kitchen)

Strawberry Rice Krispie Treats

These Rice Krispie treats would make our child selves go crazy. You'll only need four ingredients to make 'em: freeze-dried strawberries, cereal, marshmallows, and butter, so they're a good dessert to make if you don't have a lot of ingredients on-hand and don't feel up to baking! (via The Endless Meal)

Chocolate Strawberry Mock-tini

This non-alcoholic, dairy free martini is decadence at its finest. You'll create your very own chocolate coconut simple syrup before concocting a mix of cashew milk, strawberries, and swirls of melted chocolate. (via Chef Bai)

We all need more brownie recipes in our life, right? These rich bars are instantly elevated by a homemade strawberry jam that you'll likely have leftovers of to put on toasts, sandwiches, and more strawberry desserts! (via Two Spoons)

On May 2, 2023 at 12:01AM, the WGA strike went into effect. The same day, NBC announced that SNL would be immediately impacted, and that the May 6 episode would not air live. Instead, the series will show reruns for an unknown amount of time.

SNL will air repeats until further notice starting Saturday, May 6,” NBC said, via Variety. The upcoming episode was supposed to be hosted by Pete Davidson, who was a regular cast member until last May, and musical guest Lil Uzi Vert. Other hosts this season have included names like Jenna Ortega, Pedro Pascal, Steve Martin and Martin Short, Quinta Brunson, Keke Palmer, and Ana de Armas.

Additionally, according to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC sent an automated email confirming the show was taking place...then sent a follow-up retracting it. Considering SNL was scheduled to break for their hiatus on May 20, they only lost a few weeks of their end-of-spring season.

Why is the writers strike happening?

Writers in the entertainment industry (represented by the Writers Guild of America) are demanding fair wages from the bigger Hollywood studios (represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). The strike began on May 2 at 12:01 because the contracts ended at midnight.

Where is the strike?

Picket lines are in New York City and Los Angeles.

What shows will be impacted by writers strike 2023?

In addition to SNL, other late-night television shows are being immediately affected, includingThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

We don't know yet whether the upcoming seasons of scripted shows and movies will be affected.

Has this happened before?

Yes. During the 2007-2008 television season, the WGA went on strike for the same reason they're on strike right now: fair compensation.

What happens during a writers strike?

During the writers strike, television and film writers that are a part of the WGA stop working until they can reach a fair contract with the larger studios. The 2007-2008 strike lasted from November 2007 until February of 2008.

Is the writers strike 2023 over?

Yes, the writers' strike is officially over! On September 24, after five straight days of negotiation, the WGA and the larger studios + streamers finally came to a tentative agreement on a brand new three-year contract. If they end up signing the contract, the writers' strike (which has lasted for 146 days) will finally come to an end. Picketing officially ended Sunday night, and after the WGA councils voted to agree to AMPTA's contract, the writer's strike officially ended at 12:01 September 27.

Late night shows like The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live, as well as daytime talk shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show, can now return to air. That means we could see brand new episodes by the first week of October!

However, because other scripted programs are still being affected by the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike, production and post-production for your favorite TV series and movies is still at a standstill.

There are a number of TV shows in the running for best teen drama. I'm ready to press play on The Summer I Turned Pretty, One Tree Hill, and The Vampire Diaries at any given moment, but there is nothing like watching Friday Night Lights season 1. It might not be as glamorous as Gossip Girl, but that's exactly why it resonates so deeply when you watch it — FNL both highlights and honors viewers' real-world experiences because the characters are SO relatable. Instead of leaving you envious of a fictional life, Friday Night Lights welcomes you into a community you feel like you already know.

Image via NBC

Everyone in the fictional town of Dillon, Texas lives and breathes football, and Friday Night Lights season 1 opens just before the first game of the season. Right off the bat, we're introduced to characters that both evoke emotion and spark our curiosity, and we're told exactly where they are in their lives: new head coach Eric Taylor is struggling to win the town's confidence. Fullback Tim Riggins struggles both with motivation and against confident running back Smash Williams. All-American quarterback Jason Street has dreams of playing in the NFL while timid Matt Saracen takes care of his grandmother during the afternoon and serves as second-string quarterback at night.

Not to mention the fact that when I watched Friday Night Lights for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by how compelling and multi-dimensional the women are. Tami Taylor has the perfect blend of motherly love and the kind of Southern sass that puts you in your place. Minka Kelly's Lyla Garrity is one of my favorite TV characters of all time because she might be wealthy and popular, but she evades "The Curse of the Brunette" that seems to plague early 2000s leading ladies. Instead of turning into a manipulative mean girl like the high school versions of Blair Waldorf and Brooke Davis, Lyla is just kind. Does she still make insanely bad decisions (like kissing her boyfriend's best friend)? Yes, but aren't bad decisions a right of passage when you're 17?

The show's initial plots and character arcs revolve heavily around football, but the sport really just serves as a funnel for all the off-field drama. The tension between the characters makes their gameplay even more passionate — and when Street gets seriously injured during that first game of the season, the town rallies together in a way that highlights how strong a community can bond in the face of tragedy.

Image via NBC

Life in middle-class America can be tough, but it can also be really, really sweet. While I'm neither from Texas nor have attended the kind of football school Dillon High is, the contrast between the characters' responsibilities and the fun that comes with parties and joining your friends at the local burger joint resonates with me every time I rewatch.

Even the fact the show is named Friday Night Lights emphasizes that contrast because it shows just how much of a spotlight is on these kids, and how much weight is on their shoulders when they're truly just trying to survive their teenage years.

Rather than providing an escape from viewers' realities like Outer Banks does, Friday Night Lights season 1 emphasizes the realities of juggling multiple jobs, school, and family responsibility that a lot of viewers experience too. It allows you to understand the characters in a really personal way — and feel like you're a part of the community too. The world can seem so big and scary (now more than ever), which is why the simplicity of Friday Night Lights totally redefines comfort TV.

What's your standout moment from Friday Night Lights season 1? Check out why Gilmore Girls Season 7 Wasn't Supposed To Be The Final Chapter for even more TV show musings!
