The Best and Worst Places in America to Launch Your New Business

Pursuing a side hustle can be an effective way to express your creativity, inspire your entrepreneurial spirit, and generate some extra cash. Even better, a side hustle is the perfect way to test a new idea, helping you gain ultra-valuable insights and feedback before officially launching your own biz. Hello, future #girlboss! Once you’re ready to quit your day job and hustle hard, you’ll be in a perfect position to write a business plan and set up shop. Turns out, where you do business really matters; according to new data from GOBankingRates, 15 major metros are actually much more likely to help you succeed right from the start.

To pull together their list for new business owners and future full-time entrepreneurs, GOBankingRates called on the 2017 Kauffman Index of Startup Activity and Sperling’s Best Places and ranked each location according to five key factors, including the rate of new entrepreneurs, opportunity share of new entrepreneurs, startup density, the cost of living, and projected job growth. Naturally, the results showcase a solid mix of spots around the United States that offer new business owners heaps of opportunities without the sky-high cost of jam-packed places we always hear about, like San Francisco and New York City. You know what they say: It’s all about location, location, location. Ready to rock? Scope the full list below.

The Best 15 Cities to Start a Small Business

We were thrilled to learn that some of our favorite places, like San Diego, Dallas, and Charlotte, offer vibrant, self-starting communities. While some cities on the list are more costly than others, it’s a relief to see that well-known hubs like Austin, Las Vegas, and Miami still rank as affordable when it comes to launching something new.

  2. Las Vegas, NV
  3. Miami, FL
  4. Dallas, TX

The Worst 15 Cities to Start a Small Business

Just as helpful as it is to know which cities can make starting up easier, it’s important to know which places might make pursuing your entrepreneurial path a bit more difficult. Though many places on the list are amazing spots to live, they’re generally much more expensive and already flooded with new ideas. According to GOBankingRates, you should carefully consider the cash you have in the bank for your company, along with what specific opportunities you’ll need to succeed. In some cases, the high cost of living could be worth it.

  1. Milwaukee, WI
  2. Pittsburgh, PA
  3. Detroit, MI

  5. Minneapolis, MN
  6. Chicago, IL

We know it's not uncommon to find yourself a little strapped for cash in the summer. And it's definitely not uncommon to want to work for an additional line of income to fund an upcoming big trip or to be able to afford that one-bedroom apartment you've been eyeing and retire from living life with roommates. Getting yourself a side hustle is the best way to put some supplemental money in your pockets. It's not always fun or easy, but it can definitely be rewarding.

With summer in full swing, starting a side hustle is as appealing as ever. Have a beach vacation planned but low on funds? Get a side hustle. Want to be able to take a few Fridays off but worried about missing out on the income from your nine-to-five? Get a side hustle. Going to one too many rooftops for after-work drinks with coworkers? Get a side hustle to pad your wallet, and use budgeting apps like Mint to track your progress. If you share finances with a partner, you can even see where your household could benefit from some added earnings by using Turbo's Household Income feature.

Here are some popular side hustles you can start this summer and smart ways to make those dollars work for you.

1. Become best friends with your neighbor's dog. With dog-walking apps on the rise, it's becoming more and more popular to help out your fellow neighbors by walking their dog when they need it most. Whether it be early in the morning, during the middle of the day when you're working from home already, or for an extended weekend, you can likely find some time into your day-to-day schedule. With tools like Rover and Wag, you can sign up to be a dog walker when it's convenient for you (good for in between classes and after work). A 30-minute stroll through the park costs a pup's human $20 (sometimes more in larger cities), and an hour costs $30.

2. Turn that brain into money. Whether you're a recent graduate looking for extra cash or looking to give back academically, there is definitely money to be made. Colleges are becoming more and more selective in who they admit, making parents more motivated to shell out for tutors across all subjects. Tutoring in specific topics can make you good money, but parents are willing to pay the big bucks for SAT/ACT tutors. If you did well on either of those tests, you can leverage that into charging anywhere from $50-$100 an hour.

3. Have car, will travel. If you look at the apps on your or your best friend's phone, you're more than likely to see an entire folder dedicated to transportation, e.g., Lyft, Uber, Curb, and Via. The trend of ridesharing and on-demand cars is all the rage, so why not capitalize on it? It's easy to sign up for Lyft and Uber, with one catch: You do need a car. Once you're signed up and ready to hit the road, you're able to turn on the app and pick up passengers whenever it makes sense for your schedule.

4. Be your own boss and start your (fill in the blank) blog. It's not a simple task to start your own blog and gain a strong following, but if you are a subject matter expert in a certain industry (design, travel, fashion, etc.) and have a passion to share your story, it can be very lucrative. If you're passionate about writing in general, you can also look for freelance postings at your local newspaper or an online publication you follow religiously.

As much as I love Tom Holland and Zendaya and Shaun White and Nina Dobrev, celebrity friendships are *just* as important as celebrity relationships! Emma Stone is one celeb with some very fun friends (hello Taylor Swift!), but the friendship that continually makes headlines is the one she shares with Ryan Gosling. As iconic as this duo's filmography is, their relationship is even better. From Crazy, Stupid, Love's Dirty Dancing lift to breaking our hearts in La La Land, here are the friends' best moments.

Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling's Friendship Timeline

July 19, 2011 — Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling Star In Crazy, Stupid, Love

Crazy, Stupid, Love is continually praised as one of the funniest ensemble movies of the 21st Century, and for good reason. The film, which stars Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, and Joey King, introduced Emma and Ryan, but it also gave us their recreation of the Dirty Dancing lift, which is something I didn't know I needed until I saw the movie. You can stream Crazy, Stupid, Love on Hulu!

Summer 2011 — Ryan Gosling Says "There's Nobody Like" Emma Stone

It's hard to believe, but during their Crazy, Stupid, Love era, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were even more fun offscreen than they were in the film! "Emma Stone is just, like, constantly opening Christmas presents," Ryan Gosling said during the movie'spress junket (via ET Online). "There's nobody like her. As soon as she signed on to the film, I knew it was going to be good."

January 7, 2013 — Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone Team Up On Gangster Squad

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling took a step back to the '30s to share the screen in 2013's Gangster Squad. In addition to our favorite BFFs, the mobster vs. cops movie stars Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, and Sean Penn. The real standout though? Emma Stone's incredible wardrobe. I mean just look at that red dress! You can rent Gangster Squad on Amazon Prime.

December 9, 2016 — Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling Star In La La Land

In their most acclaimed joint project to date, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling broke the internet as Mia and Sebastian, an actress and jazz pianist (respectively) who are both trying to make a name for themselves in LA. The movie continues to be a source of Halloween costume inspo, heartbroken TikToks, and takes up a good portion of my summer playlist. La La Land also won Emma Stone an Oscar at the same ceremony it was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture Winner. Talk about drama! You can stream La La Land on Tubi.

September 30, 2017 — Emma Stone Joins Ryan Gosling On SNL

SNL fans got a huge treat during the fall of 2017 when Ryan Gosling served as host — and Emma Stone showed up as a surprise guest! And of course, his monologue included references to La La Land. "I was like, me, Ryan Gosling, I’m like a white kid from Canada, I can try and save jazz, so…I did!” Ryan jokes during his monologue.

“You didn’t save jazz,” Emma says after surprising the audience. “WE saved jazz.”

March 10, 2024 — Ryan Gosling Shares A Silly Moment With Emma Stone During "I'm Just Ken"

These two musical goofballs just can't help themselves when it comes to a little song and dance. During Ryan's performance of "I'm Just Ken" at the 2024 Oscars, he interacted with the crowd — as one with that much "Kenergy" does — and made his way to Emma's seat. The two shared a little moment together, obviously giving the rest of us so much life as they did so. La La Land 2, anyone?!

If there are two topics we’re totally into, it’s cool celebs doing interesting things and women pursuing side hustles. Maybe you’ve noticed? Either way, thankfully for our never-ending appetite for both, the two are not mutually exclusive! While you may think that anyone with a robust IMDb page has to spend all their time rotating between making movies and attending premieres, many celebs seriously get down with a side hustle. That’s right, you can find Grammy-winning musicians, respected actors, and high fashion models opening restaurants, starting design firms and creating beauty ranges (celebrities, they’re just like us!). We’ve rounded up 10 of our favorite examples to inspire your own entrepreneurial spirit.

There's something about celebrity relationships I just can't help but fangirl over. Whether it's Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce living out a real-life rom-com, it's Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck tying the knot 20 years after they met, or it's Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds being the cutest parents ever, I just love celebrating love. One actress that's been having a huge year is Emma Stone — after all, she's allegedly the subject of the Speak Now (Taylor's Version)track "When Emma Falls In Love," she hosted SNL for the fifth time, *and* she's getting insane amounts of critical acclaim for her work on Searchlight Pictures' Poor Things movie. Plus, Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCary are busy raising their baby girl! This is one family I can't get enough of, so here's everything you need to know about Emma Stone's husband.

After the couple was seen walking around LA wearing matching gold bands, a source told Page Six that the couple did get married! After the SAG awards and Golden Globes, movie fans everywhere mark one night as the highlight of their year: Oscar Sunday. My 2023 Oscars party was complete with themed foods, over-the-top decorations, and googly eyes à la Everything Everywhere All At Once. Both Oppenheimer and Barbie were up for some serious awards, and we've got the scoop on who took home the biggest awards of the night. Da'Vine Joy Randolph Wins Best Supporting Actress

Da'Vine Joy Randolph won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in The Holdovers. This well-deserved win comes as no surprise as Da'Vine's swept awards season so far! We're thrilled for this first-time nominee AND winner!

Ryan Gosling Handed The Mic To America, Greta, And Margot

Unsurprisingly, Ryan Gosling brought the Kenergy to his performance of "I'm Just Ken" at the Oscars. Between the vocals, the choreo, and all the silly bits in between was a poignant moment that may not seem like much, but was absolutely something to me. Amid the controversial snubs for Greta and Margot — and America not winning her category tonight — Ryan handed the mic over to the trio during his much-anticipated performance. He's been very outspoken that there wouldn't be Ken without this team, so it's extremely apropos for him to let them shine like that.

Billie Eilish + Finneas Win Best Original Song

In this house, "What Was I Made For" stays on repeat! Are we crying a lot? Yes! Is it an Academy Award winning masterpiece? Also yes! Really though, after their tear-jerker of a performance, Billie Eilish and Finneas took home the Best Original Song win for "What Was I Made For." We couldn't be happier for the sibling duo!

Cillian Murphy Dedicating His Oscar To "The Peacemakers Everywhere"

After winning the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy took a moment to call out "the peacemakers." His war film hit theaters in a year where tensions are on the rise all over the world, and to acknowledge those trying to end the fighting felt especially on time.

Emma Stone's Cady Heron Moment

After walking on stage with her broken (and gorgeous) dress, Emma Stone took time to acknowledge her fellow nominees and said, "I share this with you." It's giving Cady Heron "we should all just share it" without the cheap plastic crown. Gotta love our award-winning redheads! Really though, Emma's speech was sweet, and we loved seeing her share the love with her husband Dave McCary.
