Julia Louis-Dreyfus Is Getting Through Chemo With a Little Help from Katy Perry
In late September, just after she won her sixth consecutive Emmy for Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time, she didn’t provide any further details on prognosis or potential treatment options, but now she’s updating the world on her status, and it’s clear she’s still got her humor and strength fully in tact.

“Chemo #2: finito,” she wrote on a selfie showing her in shades, a pulled-up hoodie, and a painted-on mustache.
“We are NOT f*cking around here,” she continued. “‘I’ve got the eye of the tiger. The Fighter dancing through the fire cuz I am a champion and you’re going to hear me ROAR.'” She went on to thank her Veep costars Tony Hale and Timothy Simons, and — yep — Katy Perry, whose song “Roar” she quoted in her caption, for “their hilarious and loving inspiration.”
Later, she shared a video that revealed what that inspiration was.
In the clip, Hale, playing JLD, mimes beating up Simons, playing the role of cancer, as Perry’s “Roar” plays in the background. When they get to the chorus, they hold up signs with the lyrics on them: “You’ve got the eye of the tiger, a fighter. You are a champion and we’re going to hear you roar.”
“How lucky am I that these bozos have my back? What a moving inspiration to my day,” she captioned the video. “I’ve watched it a gazillion times. Thanks to @mrtonyhale @timothycsimons & @katyperry.”
Support for Louis-Dreyfus poured in on social media following her diagnosis, and she even got a super special shout-out from former Vice President Joe Biden. “We Veeps stick together,” Biden tweeted in the wake of the news in September, sharing a photo from a parody video they filmed for the 2014 White House Correspondents Dinner. “Jill and I, and all of the Bidens, are with you, Julia.”
HBO previously said that they would adjust Veep‘s filming schedule for its seventh and final season as needed for its star’s treatment. Judging by her support network and her fierce attitude, Louis-Dreyfus has everything she needs to keep fighting through her treatments. We wish her all the best!
