Tom Hanks Helped a Man Propose to His GF, and Cue the “Awwws”
Less than a week after watching Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa surprise his GF with a proposal on live TV, another unexpected engagement is making headlines, this one thanks to a totally unexpected celeb co-conspirator. During an appearance at the Texas Book Festival in Austin on Sunday for his new book, Uncommon Type: Some Stories ($16), Tom Hanks helped a man propose to his girlfriend — who just so happens to be a major Hanks fan — in the sweetest way ever.
According to the Associated Press, the bit was clearly pre-planned, with the The Circle actor pausing his Q and A session with his audience to say that he was bored with answering their questions and wanted to ask one of his own.
He then took out a piece of paper before pointing out a man in the crowd named Ryan McFarling, who had a question for a woman named Nikki Young: “Nikki, will you marry me?”
The couple made their way to the stage to Hanks, 61, and, with over 1,000 people watching and cheering, McFarling proceeded to get on one knee with a ring. Needless to say, Young said yes!

After the surprise proposal, Young spoke to KVUE News reporter Molly Oak about the experience, saying that it took a second for her to understand what was happening.
“I’m like super fangirl with Tom Hanks,” she said, showing off the flower given to her by the two-time Oscar winner and admitting that she almost fainted when she realized what was happening. “I don’t know how he did it, and magic happened. Most epic proposal ever.”
As for the iconic star, he reportedly hugged the new bride-to-be and gave the couple his best wishes. Too cute!
