Learn How To Make Coffee Like Your Fave Barista

coffee barista training about the basics of coffee

You know you can count on your morning latte to wake you up, but do you actually know anything about how it’s made? You’re not alone in just settling for a basic brew. Though coffee culture can be *a tad* egotistic – side eye to the beanie-wearing, mustache-having bar bros – leaning into the origins of your A.M. cup can be super satisfying, and paves the way to explore your palette and passion for coffee. Do you like a coffee with a heavy body? Big fan of microfoam? Is the bag of beans you have single-origin?

Whether you’re trying to perfect your go-to café order or just learn more about the craft, keep this quick guide in your back pocket for all things coffee. We’re breaking down some common terms to help you get the *best* benefits from your brew.

🔥 Hot tip:
When in need, hit "CRTL F" on your keyboard to search for a specific term you need to know.

Coffee Beans + Types of Roasts

  • Single origin: Coffee bean labels reading “single origin” just mean that the beans are sourced from a singular, traceable producer, crop, or region around the world. This makes identifying the best parts of your brew easier, even if single origin coffees come from different regions.
  • Blend: Coffee blends are essentially the opposite of single-origins – blends include beans from multiple farms or regions, instead of just one. The benefit of a blend is the different flavors included can balance each other out for the optimal taste.

Coffee beans are roasted after getting harvested to evoke their beloved flavors and aromas. Each roast is distinctive from the other, and you’ve probably heard of light, medium, and dark roasts. But what do they mean? It all has to do with the roast time and temperature, which also affect the caffeine content and taste of your coffee.

  • Light: Light roast coffees are roasted for a shorter amount of time at a lower temperature than medium or dark roasts. The result is a denser, more flavorful coffee. (There are more flavors in coffee than just… coffee? Yes, we’ll break that down in a sec.) It’s a common misconception that light roasts have more caffeine than dark ones – but the two contain about the same levels.
  • Medium: Medium roast coffees are the Goldilocks of the three main roasts. They’re roasted at a moderate temperature and time for a more balanced flavor, and contain the most caffeine.
  • Dark: Dark roasts stay in the roasting process for the longest time and heat up at the highest temperatures, too. This longer process results in a less creamy, more robust coffee brew.

The Espresso Shot

Photo by Larissa Farber / PEXELS

Whether made by man or machine, espresso is crafted by forcing hot water at a high pressure through a puck of very finely ground coffee beans. The product is a super concentrated dose (or shot) of coffee! There are three parts of an espresso shot to note:

  • Heart: The heart of an espresso shot is the very bottom layer and is the most bitter element. When made correctly, the heart will be a dark brown hue.
  • Body: The shot’s body lies in the middle layer and retains a medium brown color.
  • Crema: Crema is the lightest layer of an espresso shot, which floats on top. Crema contains the most complex flavors and aromas of espresso.

Types of Coffee Drinks

The types of espresso drinks you can order from Starbucks or your favorite local café are categorized by the espresso-to-milk ratio.

  • Latte: 1:2 espresso to steamed or cold milk
  • Mocha: 1:2 espresso to steamed or cold milk with a dose of chocolate syrup
  • Americano: 1:1 espresso to hot or cold water
  • Cappuccino: 1:1:1 espresso to steamed milk to milk foam
  • Cortado: 1:1 espresso to steamed milk
  • Flat white: 1:4:1 espresso to steamed milk to light milk foam
  • Lungo: A lungo is a type of espresso shot that uses more water, so it’s pulled longer. It’s more subdued in flavor than a regular espresso shot.
  • Ristretto: Ristretto shots are quite the opposite from lungo – it uses less water and is pulled in a shorter time than a regular shot. It has the strongest flavor of the three.

Different Brewing Methods

Photo by Josh Withers / PEXELS

There are tons of coffee brewing methods – each one has its own result in flavor, so you can dial in on your preferred brew. Here are a handful of the most popular methods:

  • Espresso machine: Espresso machines automatically push hot water at a high pressure through pucks of finely ground coffee for strong shots that can be used to make lattes or enjoyed alone.
  • French press: French press coffee is made by combining water and grounds in a vessel to make a brew, then the press separates the ground material from the brew from pressing down on a filter. It’s best served fresh, and you can make French press coffee in big batches, or single-serve amounts.
  • Siphon: A siphon or vacuum brewer brews coffee by heating up and cooling down water vapor from a lower vessel that rises to the upper vessel, which cycles back through the maker as brewed coffee. It can be pretty involved, so if you’re looking to prep a quick cup, this option might not be the best brew for you.
  • Aeropress: The aeropress utilizes pressurized air to force water through coffee grounds, similar to an espresso machine. The brew won’t be as strong, but it’ll still have a bolder taste than drip coffee.
  • Percolator / moka pot: A percolator, or moka pot, works by heating up water in a lower chamber that travels up through coffee grounds that get brewed up to a top chamber. Traditional percolators are made to be used on the stovetop, but you can find electric ones that make your coffee brewing ritual a whole lot easier.
  • Pour over: Pour over brews entail manually pouring hot water over coffee grounds that flows through a filter into a vessel at the bottom. There are pour over containers you can get to brew large batches of coffee, or attachments that go over the top of your mug for a single serving.

Coffee Tasting

Tasting coffee is more involved than tasting your go-to burger or pasta dish. The flavor notes are definitely complex and can sometimes be perceived as yucky. But once you learn to properly taste a cup of coffee, the easier it’ll be to identify the qualities you like and the ones you don’t.

There’s a short list of steps that baristas and coffee connoisseurs use to taste coffees:

  1. Smell: Smelling your coffee before ingesting it helps prepare the palette for what’s to come, plus your nose can actually identify a lot more notes than your mouth can.
  2. Slurp: We know slurping your drink isn’t super welcome in traditional dining situations, but it’s helpful in the coffee tasting sense. Slurping allows the coffee to reach every part of your palette for you to taste all of its flavorful nuances!
  3. Analyze: Think about what you experience as you taste the coffee. Is it acidic? What notes do you get? Below are a few terms most commonly used to describe coffee.

You can analyze the taste of coffee by these terms:

  • Body: A coffee’s body primarily relates to its texture. So, does it feel more bold and heavy, or light and weak?
  • Acidity: Acidity can be perceived as sharpness or dryness among the tongue and palette. There are tons of different acids that can be found in coffee, but the main thing to note are their effects on tasting.
  • Sweetness: Think of coffee sweetness like a scale. The brew can either be smooth (sweeter) or harsh (less sweet). It’s all about what you can distinguish!
  • Finish: The coffee’s finish relates to the feeling and taste it leaves after you’ve consumed the brew. Maybe there are some stronger flavor notes or acidic sensations that shine through once you’ve finished it!
  • Aroma: Aroma in coffee just means how it smells. Some coffees give off sweet, fruity smells, while others have more robust, darker chocolatey ones.

Life is all about the little treats that keep you going. For me, it’s either a sweet dessert or a biiig cup of iced coffee – but those purchases can really rack up, especially when I’m making weekly (or TBH, twice- or thrice-weekly) Starbucks runs. I know I’m not alone in wishing there were more Starbucks deals that’d save me a buck or two each visit.

Does Starbucks have discounts?

Yes, Starbucks has discounts often. They usually depend on the day and time you visit, or seasonal offerings that the chain decides to promote. You can easily find Starbucks deals in the Starbucks app, and check back here for current offers!

What is the cheapest thing to get from Starbucks?

If you still want a drink (but want to spend the least amount of money), a kids-sized steamed (or cold) apple juice is the cheapest thing to get from Starbucks at $2.25. Typically, any kids-sized drink will save you some dough!

How does Starbucks Rewards work?

You earn 1 Star per $1 spent at a Starbucks location with Starbucks Rewards after scanning the Starbucks app and paying with cash, debit card, credit card, or select mobile wallets. You can earn 2 Stars per $1 spent after making a purchase with a preloaded Starbucks Card linked to your Starbucks Rewards account as well. Once you earn enough, you can spend those Stars on freebies like a drink customization, a hot brewed coffee, or a handcrafted drink like a latte!

A Cinderella Story isn't just a movie — it's honestly a cultural moment. The costume montage, the spastic colons and synchronized swimming, the rain in this drought... even Gavin Degraw singing over the One Tree Hilltrailer on the DVD stand out! Everything about this film is iconically ingrained in our collective conscious, making Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray the Y2k blueprint for many of the "It" pairings we know and love today.

We last left our Princeton royalty preparing for their freshman year of college, dreaming of happily-ever-after — or at least graduation — and that was that! But in this era of reboots, I've often wondered what happened to our OG tortured poets after the credits rolled. Luckily, I'm not the only one! Chad Michael Murray just tee'd up a sequel, and yes that's me you hear squealing right now. Here's everything we know about what's to come for everyone's fave modern fairytale!

Is there a part two to a Cinderella story?

Photo via Warner Bros Entertainment Inc

There's Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley, but that's more so a part of a series of "Cinderella stories" rather than an actual sequel. So far, we haven't gotten a follow-up on our Princeton-bound faves.

Has "A Cinderella Story 2" been announced?

There's been no formal announcement yet, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. During his press tour for Mother of the Bride, Chad Michael Murray told ETthat he's definitely interested in bringing Austin Ames back. He said that even his daughter told him, "You need to make another one of these, Daddy," after she watched A Cinderella Story for the first time.

His response to the idea? "Here you go, Hil. From me to you, let's do it!" — referring to Hilary Duff, of course! The timing couldn't be better either, given that Hilary just gave birth to her fourth child and could hypothetically be available to film in the coming months...just saying!

Again, there's no official information about this project yet, but with a main piece of the puzzle on board, we're one step closer to my own personal happily-ever-after — a real sequel to A Cinderella Story once and for all.

The Starbucks summer menu just dropped, and it’s packed with some pretty divisive drinks. The menu lineup introduced a new flavor of Refreshers alongside something Starbucks has never done on a large scale before: boba. The most recent release also brought two new sweet treats to the pastry case – the Orange Cream Cake Pop and Pineapple Cloud Cake.

Given that these new sips and snacks really venture into uncharted territory, I had to give them a proper try to see if they’re worth it! If you’re on the fence about trying some items from this year’s Starbucks summer menu, scroll on for a totally honest review.

Summer-Berry Refresher

I got my hopes up for the new Refreshers with fruity boba. In hindsight, the long-awaited hype was not worth it. By itself, the Summer-Berry Refresher tastes just like blue Gatorade. Sorry not sorry.

The boba was expected to be the saving grace of this drink, but I was left wanting more after sipping down my first few pearls. The raspberry-flavored popping boba pieces supply a fun texture, but they’re not super flavorful. You also don’t get a great serving size based on the ratio of the drink.

Maybe it was just the location I went to, but though I was given the special wide boba straw, I couldn’t use it with the lid that came with my drink. My Refreshers were handed to me with the signature Starbucks sipper lid – which is too small to fit the new straws. Just a bit annoying, especially if you plan to drink this in the car or on the go!

Summer-Berry Lemonade Refresher

I sipped theSummer-Berry Lemonade Refresher sans boba first. It definitely has more flavor than the OG, but it’s overwhelmingly lemonade-y. The zesty lemonade really overpowered the berry Refresher flavor, so much so that you can’t quite taste the berry.

I might recommend ordering this bev with a light amount of lemonade, so the flavors balance out more harmoniously.

Summer Skies Drink

Okay, y'all – the Summer Skies Drink redeems the rest of the Refreshers. Essentially, it’s the Summer-Berry Refresher with a splash of coconut milk, a la the Pink Drink. I think it’s my favorite of all 3 of them!

It’s creamy and mildly sweet, which works out wonderfully. With the boba, it’s definitely giving milk tea, which I – as a boba fiend – very much appreciate. Though I like the drink itself, I still wish the boba delivered a more berry-like flavor.

White Chocolate Macadamia Cold Brew

Well, yes! The White Chocolate Macadamia Cream Cold Brew is – dare I say – the best thing on this year’s Starbucks summer menu. It’s so good. I typically associate nuttier coffee flavors with fall, but this bev has changed my mind. As much as I appreciate a sweet treat, this cold coffee was a nice reprieve from the all-new Berry Refreshers I had sipped beforehand.

This new menu item is great for those who don’t like a ton of sweetness — the bitter cold brew contrasts exceptionally well with the sweet white chocolate macadamia-flavored cold foam. It gets even better (my tasting notes read: “so very delicious”) when you stir in the cold foam with the coffee.

I also enjoy the little crunchy cookie crumble bits on top. While the popping boba (Starbucks is calling ‘em pearls) falls flat, these sprinkles actually enliven the drinking experience!

Orange Cream Cake Pop

New cake pop just dropped! And it’s everything. The hard shell that coats the tiny ball of cake in this treat is extremely satisfying. When I bit into it, it had an indescribable (in a good way) kind of crunch to it. And while the exterior is harder, the cakey inside is very moist. I wasn’t surprised at how good the texture was since most of Starbucks’ cake pops are scrumptious. That’s that for the texture…

As far as the flavor goes, I expected more of the Orange Cream Cake Pop. Sure, there’s a slight orange flavor – it’s not too overwhelming – but this skewered snack is definitely heavier on all things vanilla-y and downright sugary. It almost tastes like an orange Dreamsicle.

All that being said, I’d still order the Orange Cream Cake Pop over and over and over again if I just want a lil’ something.

Pineapple Cloud Cake

I didn’t get to try the Pineapple Cloud Cake yet since the location I went to had sold out (a good sign, perhaps)! According to Starbucks, it’s “an airy cake filled with layers of pineapple cream, pineapple spread and whole fruit pieces with a sweet drizzle topping.”

Amazon's adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s famed Red, White & Royal Blueblew our minds with its perfectly extravagant and messy royal romance. Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz stole our hearts with their antics, proving that love isn't always as cookie cutter as we think it should be. Not only that, but it was the LGBT film we never knew we needed until it hit the big screen last year.

If you've been missing Prince Henry and Alex, you're in luck because a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue is officially coming! Here's everything we know about the latest developments!

Is the main cast returning?

Image via Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

I'm happy to share that Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are returning! I honestly don't think the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel would be the same if they weren't.

However, no other cast information has been released! Hopefully we'll see Uma Thurman and Clifton Collins, Jr. reprise their roles!

What's the sequel going to be about?

Image via Prime Video

As of yet, Variety reports that not much has been confirmed about the sequel's plot or release date. My guess is that there the two lovebirds will have to juggle new responsibilities and mishaps.

What the original plot of "Red, White & Royal Blue?"

Image via Prime Video

The novel centers around the character of Alex Claremont-Diaz, a first son of the United States, and his romantic relationship with Prince Henry, British royalty.

We cannot wait to see what new adventures are two lovebirds will cook up in Red, White & Royal Blue, but for now we’ll be rereading (and rereading) RWRB.
