Your Master Checklist of Doctors You Need to See (and How Often)

With controversies over health care legislation, constant breaking news about drugs and pharmaceuticals, and a growing collective concern over meeting our self-care needs, you’d think that getting regular check-ups would be high on most of our priority lists. But between tracking down GPs and specialists in your insurance network, scheduling appointments that don’t conflict with other obligations, and getting up the courage to ask about that weird health symptom that’s been plaguing you, many of us push our own personal health to the back of our minds. We’re helping you break that cycle and step up to the #adulting plate by laying out the five health professionals you should be seeing on the reg — and why.

1. General Practitioner: Your GP should be a one-stop shop for making sure your bod is in proper working order. According to the CDC, more than half of all doctor’s visits made annually are to primary care physicians. The most common reason for getting to the doctor is for prescription medication, but that shouldn’t be the only reason you give your primary care physician a call.

By establishing a rapport with a general practitioner when you’re feeling well, you’ll get better care and feel more comfortable going in when you’re ill. Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance carriers are mandated to cover one well visit per year as “preventative care.” Take advantage of this provision by stopping by your GP once annually for a check-up on your vitals, vaccine boosters, and routine blood work.

2. Gynecologist: For years, conventional medical wisdom advised women to check in with their gynecologist for a wellness check and pelvic exam once per year, and the hallmark of this exam was the yearly Pap smear test. But these guidelines are currently being reevaluated — according to Harvard Health, it may be time to throw them out the window. While a yearly Pap smear can’t harm you, it may be unnecessary if your results have come back normal for three years in a row. And once you’re over the age of 30, the recommendation decreases from annual to bi-annual Pap smears, anyway.

For now, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) still recommends keeping an appointment with the gyno during each calendar year. This might still be the smartest course of action, as it gives you an opportunity to have your breasts checked for abnormalities and discuss any sexual health concerns with your provider. Dr. Renjie Chang, a practicing OB/GYN and women’s health advocate, agrees with this course of action for several reasons. She says, “There are many early indicators of endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and cervical cancer. Early detection can make a huge difference in outcome.” Citing some examples of symptoms we might be tempted to ignore, she continues, “An overactive bladder could be an early sign of interstitial cystitis, which leads to chronic pelvic pain. Even something as minor as bad odor could indicate bacterial vaginosis, which, left untreated, can cause premature birth. The earlier something is found, the easier the treatment becomes.”

3. Dentist: To keep your teeth gleaming white — and get an early jump on dental conditions like gum disease and cavities — it’s recommended that you visit the dentist for a cleaning once every six months. If this is something you’d be tempted to skip, perhaps this will make your reconsider: Some studies link dental care to better quality of life and improved health overall. Twice a year is the ideal, and annual is the bare minimum to hop in the dentist’s chair.

4. Optometrist: If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, you’re probably used to visiting the optometrist once per year to get that prescription renewed. But if you’ve never had impaired vision, it might be hard to come to terms with it; in fact, you might not even notice. As we age, the clarity of our vision decreases gradually, which can affect our ability to read, drive, and perform at work. It can also give you migraines. That’s why a simple vision test once every other year is a good idea. You’ll also be tested for glaucoma during this exam and answer questions about your family history.

5. Mental Health Professional: Visiting a therapist doesn’t have to be reserved for times of crisis. You should have a psychiatrist, psychologist, or licensed counselor on your list of preferred medical professionals so that when you need one, you’ve got one in your contacts. You might not feel like you need to see a therapist at the moment, and that’s great! But there’s nothing wrong with checking in to get in touch with what’s going on with your heart, soul, and spirit.

Carolyn Wagner, a licensed professional counselor and psychotherapist practicing in Wilmette, IL, put it this way: “People often think that something has to be wrong to seek out a therapist, but that’s simply not the case. Therapy can help keep you from getting to a place where something seems or feels wrong. Much like your annual well visit to your physician, therapists can help you assess how things are going in your life, identify areas for potential problems, and provide ideas for how to prevent those problems from coming to fruition.”

It also means knowing where to find help when you need it. Wagner adds, “[Well visits] also establish a relationship with a therapist so that if you do find yourself having difficulty in the future, it’s easier for you to reach out for help.” Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety can manifest as physical pain if left untreated, and times of career transition, big relationship changes, and childbirth (read: ages 21-35) tend to be especially fraught with worry and instability. Consider your mental hygiene to be as essential as any other part of your body, and get thee to a psychologist who can assess your state of mind.

The easiest way to stop putting off seeing the doctor is to pick up the phone and make an appointment. Figure out the rest — whether you’ll need time off, whether or not your insurance will cover the cost of your care, etc. — later. By getting on the books with the doctors you need to see, you’re making a commitment to yourself that will pay off for years.

Between work commitments, grocery runs, and coffee dates, it feels like we barely have time to even make it to the gym. So when we do actually get our gear and go amid all these responsibilities (hello, 2024 New Year’s resolution), who can blame us for simply wanting to skip straight to cardio, burn as many calories as we can in 30 minutes, and then bounce? Unfortunately, this is a super ill-advised way to exercise, because it means you’re skimping on an essential part of the workout routine: stretching. Although adding a warmupmight mean tacking an extra 20 minutes onto your workout (you can do it!), the numerous benefits should make integrating stretching into your gym time a no-brainer. Nichole Tipps — lead trainer for V Shred, a virtual fitness training program — offers us some insight about the importance of stretching.


Everything You Need To Know About Stretching During A Workout

1. Why to Stretch: It’s not just for gym rats. According to Tipps, all of us, no matter how athletically inclined, should be incorporating stretching into our schedules.

“Many people ignore stretching when working out or just as a daily routine,” she says. “Stretching has an array of health benefits that serve as building blocks for longevity and physical well-being.”

Stretching increases flexibility, which improves range of motion in addition to improving workouts, and it delays the effects of atrophy later in life. It also aids posture and relieves stress. In terms of exercising, stretching has advantages both pre- and post-workout.

“Stretching increases blood flow to the muscles and improves your circulation,” explains Tipps. Because of this, failing to stretch beforehand can result in injury, and neglecting to do it afterward can lead to enhanced soreness and a longer recovery period. You’re also making yourself more susceptible to pain, inflammation, and tension in general, Tipps warns.

2. When to Stretch: Most people are at least vaguely aware of the benefits of stretching, but a lot of confusion surrounds when to actually do it during a workout. Contrary to popular belief, the heavy-duty stretching should be reserved for when you’ve finished exercising.

“After your workout is a better time to stretch with more dedication,” Tipps confirms. “Your muscles are tense, and they are tired and stressed in a good way. So stretching can help relieve that tension and reduce the soreness that results from working a muscle.”

Allot 10-15 minutes for these post-sweat stretches. Before your workout, simply stretch lightly, keeping the time to less than 10 minutes.

“Ease your muscles into the idea that you will be challenging them to perform,” Tipps instructs.

3. What to Stretch: Both of these stretch seshes should always address your arms, legs, and back, regardless of what areas that workout focuses on.

“There are different parts to each of these areas, so concentrate on those that your workout calls for that day, but don’t neglect everything else altogether either,” advises Tipps. “Remember, a lot of workout routines include compound exercises, which are multi-joint movements that work several muscles at one time.”

Although stretching might initially seem like yet another chore to add to your to-do list, its benefits are invaluable enough to no longer ignore. As Tipps encourages, “Stretch regularly, and over time you will reap the benefits and maintain your mobility.”

If you’re one of those people who needs all the help you can get to enjoy your workouts, it can be hard to motivate yourself to work out twice a week, much less four or five times. By contrast, for some people, exercise addiction is a very real thing. But actually, there’s a pretty definitive number of days that you should be working out versus resting, at least once you’ve reached a higher level of fitness. Most new activity and fitness trackers even provide expert guidance on resting, like COROS watches and the new Apple Watch. Cue the ever-important rest day. It turns out, exercise experts agree on the number of rest days people who are in good shape and exercising regularly should take. On average, you should be taking two days per week for rest and active recovery.

Strength Training: 2-3 Days

The magic formula, according to Noam Tamir, CSCS, founder of TS Fitness, is three days of strength training, two days of cardio, and two days of active rest per week.

Strength training days are absolutely crucial for maintaining a healthy weight. In addition to forming and shaping a strong, sexy bod, adding muscle mass increases your resting metabolism — meaning you'll burn more calories when you’re at home on your couch, enjoying a good Netflix binge. If you’re not looking to add any noticeable muscle, you can theoretically strength train twice a week and make use of that third day for cardio, but we wouldn’t recommend skipping it altogether.

You can strength train in a variety of ways, too. Lifting is an obvious option, but for those who are really looking for a leaner physique or who just hate lifting, pilates and intense vinyasa yoga are also fabulous. Functional training, like rock climbing or rowing, also qualifies.

Make sure to take a break between your strength training days. Most experts say that you need at least 48 hours for your muscles to recover. In the meantime, there’s cardio!

Cardio: 2-3 Days

Cardio is undoubtedly important, not only for keeping your heart healthy, but also for burning fat. Without getting too technical, you should aim to hit 85-100 percent of your target heart rate for roughly 15 minutes. You can calculate your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. So, if you’re 27, your max heart rate would be 193, and 85 percent of that would be 164.

You can get there with high-intensity interval training, long-distance running, Zumba, cardio kickboxing — whatever floats your boat.

Active Rest: 2 Days

Finally, one of the most important parts of your workout plan: active rest. Two days of your week should be fully focused on letting your muscles rebuild through gentle stretching, walking, restorative yoga, or foam rolling. By completing these kinds of workouts twice a week, you’ll be staying active and building flexibility all while chilling out!

The Dangers of Over-Exercising

It’s important to take time off from your workouts if health is your overall goal. For one thing, over-exercising can lead to adrenal fatigue and other disorders, as exercise is literally added stress for your body. Your adrenal glands respond to exercise by releasing stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, and over time, not giving your adrenals a break can lead to tiredness, lethargy, and even thyroid problems.

And besides, it’s important to take a mental break from exercise. When you start to obsess about fitness, is when a healthy habit turns into something more sinister. Do yourself a favor and take at least two days a week for rest or active recovery. Your body will thank you!

We're still deep in Vanderpump Rulesseason 11, but any good fans know the news never stops with this spicy crew. Whether their breaking stories about Scandoval or scorching friendships and starting feuds, there's just always something to talk about. The latest goss may not be what you're thinking though — according to Page Six(and Andy Cohen himself), production is fully paused on anything related to season 12. They have their alleged reasons for halting, but here's what I think is really happening.

Why did producers pause "Vanderpump Rules" filming for season 12?

It's been a major talking point during this season and its interview cycles that cameras basically went right back up after the Scandoval news broke, and they never really went back down for a full break. According to both production and Andy Cohen himself, Page Sixreported that they ultimately decided to press pause on anything season 12-related because wanted the cast to have a break after the almost nonstop Scandoval-fueled filming last year.

Will Ariana Madix return to "Vanderpump Rules" season 12?

I honestly don't think Ariana Madix plans to return to the Vanderpump Rules cast, and here's why:

  1. She's booked and busy. Between landing a hosting gig on Love Island, wrapping up a broadway show, scoring shoe deals, writing books, and beyond...it just makes sense that maybe Ariana's outgrown this world! She started on VPRwhen she was 28 years old — a full decade later, she's just a different person with likely different goals, especially after Scandoval.
  2. There was some allegedly big friendship-altering drama at the reunion. Since they filmed, there are plenty of rumors about who's still friends and why, but one thing is for certain: nobody's talking. And while obody will spill the beans on what was said yet, even Andy Cohen confirmed the reunion was "intense." My guess is that Ariana revealed to the cast that season 11 was her last, and that it sent everyone — especially Lala Kent and Scheana Shay — into a spiral. After all, this show is everyone's job at the end of the day, and Ariana leaving could potentially impact that. Still, like I said, she's likely outgrown the entire situation.
  3. Something About Her finally opening could mean their own show. Katie Maloney and Ariana announced onWatch What Happens Live!that their long-awaited sandwich shop is set to open on May 22. It's safe to say that the girls are EAGER to eat at this shop, with Tiktoks and Tweets galore asking about the opening for a while now...so why wouldn't Katie and Ariana wanna capitalize on that even more with their own show? It's obviously all speculation, but I could definitely see this being a successful, actually interesting VPR spinoff...I'm looking at you, The Valley.
Considering all this, my guess would be that production's working hard to make things work with Ariana, or find a way to break the news easy to the rest of the cast.

Who's returning for "Vanderpump Rules" season 12?

There aren't any formal announcements of returning Vanderpump Rules cast members — especially because the current season is still on air. However, one could safely assume almost everyone would choose to return, except for Ariana and maybe Katie (because have you ever seen someone more sick of every single man's BS on one show before?!). But, I'm not sure if we're even gonna get another season of this show, TBH. Why?

  • Nobody works at Sur anymore, and it just feels like we've moved so far past the original premise (and exciting drama) of the show.
  • Lisa Vanderpump (you know, THE Vanderpump in Vanderpump Rules) is hardly on anymore, and when she is, she's saying something that's just...off. Plus, she's got the Villa to run — they're apparently casting for another season as we speak.
  • Everyone's kinda phased out of this era — they're all older, have kids, split up, etc. There's just not that much keeping them all together in this way. Some could easily phase into the travesty that's The Valley, but ultimately VPR is just maybe past it's prime.

When will "Vanderpump Rules" season 12 air?

I would have guessed we'd get the next season by mid-winter 2025 given the turnaround time of the most recent season of Vanderpump Rules, but now I'm not sure. If I had to guess, I think we could get something by fall 2025, but who knows how long this hiatus can last. Or — like I said before — if the show even returns.
