10 Life Lessons I Learned from Binge-Watching ‘The O.C.’ As an Adult

I don’t want to say that I didn’t appreciate The O.C. when it aired in real time in 2003, because I really did. I knew from the moment those haunting Phantom Planet lyrics started playing from my TV screen that I had something special. I knew from the moment that Ryan Atwood and Marissa Cooper locked eyes for the first time that I was about to witness a love story unlike any other one I’d seen. If I sound dramatic, it’s because I mean to be! As an awkward middle schooler, The O.C.‘s quippy dialogue and emotional scenes gave me an outlet for my adolescent emotions, and its top-notch soundtracks set the stage for teary nights in my room.

I recently embarked on my first binge-watch of the first season as an adult, and I was fascinated by the extent to which a little grown-up perspective changed my colorful Orange County world. Once totally enamored with Marissa and Summer’s wardrobes, I was now more concerned with the subtle relationship dynamics playing out on screen (okay, the fashion is still pretty incredible). Once too in love with Seth to see his flaws, I was now tuned into the way his social faux pas and self-absorption made him kind of a bad catch. The O.C. has plenty to teach tweens and adults about, but here are just 10 of the life lessons I learned from my recent rewatch of the show’s first season.

1. A homemade breakfast can cure anything that ails you — and is pretty much guaranteed to make you more popular in any situation. A major tension in the first few episodes is the conflict between Sandy and Kirsten Cohen about whether or not Ryan should be allowed to stay in that beautiful pool house on a more permanent basis. True to form, Sandy the “Crusader for Justice” wants to give the kid from Chino a shot, while Kirsten thinks he’d be better off in foster care. While Ryan’s homemade breakfast doesn’t mark the final conclusion to this conflict, it definitely eases tensions between him and Kirsten. It just goes to show — there are few things that perfectly scrambled eggs can’t fix!

2. Hiding from a problem is typically not the best solution. As any group of high schoolers — or, at least, any group of high schoolers with easy access to empty mansions — would do, Seth and Marissa decide that the best way to avoid having Ryan sent to foster care is to hide him in one of Kirsten and Caleb’s model homes. Great idea, right? Wrong! I’ll spare you the dramatic details of the fight, the fire, and the awkward revelations about the history between Marissa’s dad and Kirsten, but suffice to say that hiding from potential consequences is rarely the answer… even if you are planning to do it in a mansion.

3. Share your dreams with the people you love. While Seth is open with Ryan early in the season about his dream to sail alone to Tahiti, it’s unclear whether or not he’s been as clear with his parents about it. This comes back to bite him in the you-know-where later in the season (and into season two), when he decides to flee Newport in pursuit of his lone journey. Don’t you think it would’ve been handy for people to know his dreams so they could support him in a more meaningful way?

4. Be open about your exes. Oh, where do I begin with this one? There are countless instances in this series where untold secrets about a previous relationship rear their ugly head at very inopportune times for the people involved, but let’s call Ryan, Marissa, and Theresa Exhibit A. If Ryan had been honest with new flame Marissa about his romantic past in Chino from the get-go, he would have avoided an extremely uncomfortable Thanksgiving encounter… and who knows what else? If you’ve had a tendency to be cagey about your exes with a current bae, watching Ryan’s example should make you want to be more honest.

5. People are rarely as intimidating as you think they are. For years, Seth was so enamored with Summer that all he could do was pine for her and secretly bestow her name on his boat, but when they finally met and start flirting, he learns that he’s not the only student at The Harbor School who sleeps with a toy horse next to their bed. (Princess Sparkle and Captain Oats are still so meant to be.) Think of how much less time our boy Cohen would have spent feeling sorry for himself if he’d thought for even one second that Summer was potentially his own kind of dork.

6. It’s important to know when to bring in an expert. Marissa got in way over her head when she tried to tackle Oliver’s health issues on her own, and while she probably needed a real grown up, even adults can learn from the cautionary tale that played out in the penthouse of that fancy hotel. It’s important to learn what you can handle and what’s above your pay grade. There’s no shame in admitting that you can’t get through something on your own. Rather, there’s only shame in knowing that a problem exists and that you didn’t seek the help that’s really needed.

7. Making a choice is almost always necessary, even if it seems like you can have it all. Teenagers everywhere swooned at the thought of being in Seth’s shoes (Chuck Taylors, obviously) and having twoseemingly perfect suitors vying for their attention. Remember those awesome Chrismukkah gifts Seth got from both Summer and Anna? Well, it seemed too good to be true at the time… and it was, because in the end, Seth had to make a choice, and his inability to do so in the first place really damaged his credibility.

8. When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. Sandy and Kirsten spend a lot of time in the first season trying to put their faith in Caleb, even though he continually proved not to be trusted. While it’s nice to give people the benefit of the doubt, this dysfunctional family dynamic should serve as a reminder to all of us that people’s actions speak a whole lot louder than their words.

9. It takes a lot longer to rebuild trust than it does to destroy it. Ryan is basically the poster child for trust issues, and every time he’s let down by one of his friends (ahem, Marissa), we get a front row seat to the inevitably long process of the aforementioned disappointing friend trying to win him back. Life would be much easier — and TV much less interesting, I guess — if we didn’t tamper with people’s trust in the first place.

10. Appreciate family members and all of their quirks. No relationship better demonstrates this truth than that between the Cohen family and The Nana. By the time Sandy’s mother has arrived in Newport, we’ve already been treated to tons of family folklore about how intimidating and, well, mean she is. So when we find out later in the episode (spoiler alert!) that she actually has cancer, it’s like a punch to the gut for us too. This particular emotional roller coaster should serve as a lesson to us all that it’s important to appreciate the good, the bad, and the ugly in our family members because our time with them isn’t guaranteed.

If you haven't gotten your fill of all things Vanderpump Rules, Hulu is coming to your rescue with a brand new show, Vanderpump Villa. The series follows the hand-picked staff of Lisa Vanderpump’s luxury French villa as they live and work together, navigating every extravagant desire of their wealthy guests. As you can expect, when beautiful people go with Lisa Vanderpump and her business ventures...chaos follows.

The news came out one day after Bravo aired the final episode of Vanderpump Rules’ season 10 reunion, in which fans saw the highly anticipated confrontation between Racquel Leviss and Ariana Madix months after news of Leviss’ and Tom Sandoval’s affair broke. The affair, which captivated the nation and has since been dubbed “Scandoval,” subsequently ended Sandoval’s decade-long relationship with Madix and the close friendship between Madix and Leviss.

The finale episode brought in series-high ratings for Vanderpump Rules and Bravo with over 4.1 million viewers over a three day period. This, combined with Hulu’s latest venture into more unscripted territory, likely marks the reason for Vanderpump Villa, and TBH we’re not mad about it.

If you've got questions, though, we totally get it. Here's everything we know about the new series so far.

What is Vanderpump Villas?

Image via Instagram

The Vanderpump Villas — called "Chateau Rosabelle" on the show — are actually the Chateau St. Joseph, located in Mazerolles-du-Razès in the South of France. While the property is owned by Delphine and Frédéric Roubieu, Lisa Vanderpump and her curated these experiences for guests as a sort of "pop-up" business. However, the show follows whether or not Lisa wants to dive in head first and make this a more permanent part of her extensive hospitality portfolio.

Will "Vanderpump Villa" be an ongoing series?

Image via Bravo

We're not sure yet! So far, Hulu ordered an initial 10 episode season, though that can certainly change. Plus...we still have to find out if Lisa even wants to continue this new international business venture!

Who is in the "Vanderpump Villa" cast?

Images via Hulu

Vanderpump Villa brings us a slew of new faces this year! The staff includes everyone from the Executive Chef to the housekeepers. The full cast is Stephen Alsvig, Gabriella Sanon, Anthony Bar, Caroline Byl, Marciano Brunette, Priscila Ferrari, Hannah Fouch, Andre Mitchell, Terry Hall, Eric Funderwhite, Grace Cottrell, and Emily Kovacs.

When will "Vanderpump Villa" premiere?

Image via Hulu

An official date is still in the air, Hulu states the show is "Coming soon," and Entertainment Tonightreports we can expect the show to premiere this spring. For now, catch up on all things VPR on Peacock or live on Bravo.

Vanderpump Villa | Extended Preview | Hulu

Lisa Vanderpump can be seen telling her carefully selected staff that they'll need to provide topnotch service to guests in France, but chaos quickly ensues. We expect to see moments where fun, arguments, love, and luxurious dining fills our screens.

If Vanderpump knows anything, it’s how to pick an incredible reality TV cast – so you know that Vanderpump Villa will be incredible. Can't wait to watch along with y'all! 😘

School is finally back in session! Our favorite mockumentary returns February 7 and I, for one, could not be more excited. Judging from the trailer, Abbott Elementary season 3 is going to be full of laughs, especially since Ava spent the summer at Harvard and it turned her into a menace. First up on the agenda: I need the Abbott Elementary season 3 premiere to address just how "fine" Gregory and Janine are after their kiss, because I do not believe them. If you're excited for the new season of the hit TV show, then here's everything you need to know before the premiere.

What is Abbott Elementary season 3 about?

Image via Disney

Abbott Elementary season 3 will pick up with our favorite Philadelphia teachers. Janine and Gregory have to navigate their newfound friendship after sharing a kiss...then deciding to stay friends (I'm still crying about it). Ava's returned from Harvard with a newfound fervor for order and productivity, and Janine starts out the year by executing a district-wide career day. I'm very excited to see what it looks like for all these characters' relationships, their jobs, and their lives to evolve!

"It's always just about more growth," Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson tells Cosmopolitan UK. "So [for season 3] I think it'd be fun to ask what happens when people have the opportunity to go on to bigger and better things and make massive change, so that's what I'm interested in playing with."

What is the Abbott Elementary season 3 release date?

Image via Gilles Mingasson/Disney

Season 3 of Abbot Elementary will premiere on February 7, 2024 at 9 pm EST. The series was renewed for a junior season on January 11, 2023, so I'm very excited that the season is finally here!

Who's in the season 3 Abbott Elementary cast?

Image via Gilles Mingasson/Disney

Abbott Elementary season 3 features all your favorite characters from the first two seasons, including Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis. Josh Segarra, Kimia Behpoornia, and Benjamin Norris will also be joining the cast.

Where can I watch Abbott Elementary season 3?

Image via Gilles Mingasson/Disney

Abbot Elementary season 3 premieres its first two episodes on ABC February 7 (you can also watch the premiere on the Hulu + Live TV bundle), and you'll also be able to stream the episodes on Hulu the next day. New episodes will air weekly until the finale on May 1.

How many episodes will be in season 3 of Abbott Elementary?

Image via Gilles Mingasson/Disney

Because of the writers and actors strikes over the summer of 2023, Abbott Elementary season 3 will have 14 episodes instead of 22 like season 2. However, Quinta is viewing this shorter season as an opportunity to rest. "[22 episodes] is a lot of TV, in particular for me because I’m writing and producing and starring in it,” she tells Deadline. “So for me, I welcomed a shorter season because it was tiring, exhausting work. Love it, but exhausting for me.”

Is there going to be an Abbott Elementary season 4?

Image via Gilles Mingasson/Disney

Quinta Brunson "definitely" wants to do a season 4 of Abbott Elementary! "And more should we be fortunate to do more," Quinta tells Cosmopolitan UK. "But, I'm not going to tell you what I see for the end, because then you won’t watch!" We'll have to see how this school year plays out to determine what season 4 could hold (and if Janine and Gregory will finally get together!)

I've been trying all year to get SNL tickets, and I finally got to sit in on an episode of SNL season 49 the weekend of February 3! I was super excited for this episode of Saturday Night Live because Ayo Edebiri was the host and I'm a huge fan of The Bear. So I knew if I wanted my shot at getting an SNL standby ticket, I had to really work for it! Because of the demand, Saturday Night Live tickets in 2024 can be hard to get, which is exactly why I've laid out how I got my standby tickets and how you can get yours! Keep reading for all the details.

Is it possible to get SNL tickets?

Image via Chloe Williams/Brit + Co

Yes, it's possible to get Saturday Night Live tickets in 2024! The SNL ticket lottery opens back up in August, so until then, you can use the standby portal to try and get a spot in a taping. Reservations for the Saturday Night Live virtual standby line open at 10 am EST the Thursday before a show, and it's super important to be on the page at least five minutes beforehand. As soon as the clock strikes 10 and the reservation opens up, you have to move quickly to claim a spot.

If you're successful, you'll get an email confirmation (and later your SNL standby number for the in-person line). If it sells out before you can get a ticket, you'll have to try again next week. The February 3 show was my third or fourth attempt, so don't lose hope!

How long is the wait for SNL tickets?

Image via Chloe Williams/Brit + Co

Your wait for SNL tickets totally depends on your standby number. (I will point out that I got SNL tickets to the dress rehearsal, so my experience will be tailored towards that performance!). After confirmation emails are sent out Thursday, everyone has to be in line and checked in Friday night by 6:30 pm. This is where the waiting comes into play because they don't hand out the physical standby cards until 12:01 am on Saturday morning!

Honestly, the wait wasn't as bad as it could have been because before the online portal, you had to wait in line (without a pre-approved number) all night long! It was cold, but I was with a friend *and* NBC gave out tomato soup and hot chocolate, so honestly, I had a great time. I made some friends in line, and we were allowed to go into NBC studios periodically to walk around or go to the bathroom.

The last two hours were definitely the hardest, but once they started handing out SNL standby cards, it flew by! I was originally number 16, but since some people didn't show up, I got bumped up to 12. I'm super lucky that I was so close to the front; I was in a cab by 12:30 am and in bed by 1:30 am.

How many people get into SNL standby?

Image via Chloe Williams/Brit + Co

In the standby line, I was surrounded by people who'd gotten SNL tickets multiple times, and it seems to be the general consensus that around the first 40 people always get in. The line for standby cards was definitely over 100 people, but I'm not sure more than 60 made it all the way through to the show. How many people get into SNL standby really depends on how many regular audience members don't show up, so the number will change.

I wore jeans, a hoodie, and sneakers to wait in line so I'd be comfortable, but for the actual dress rehearsal, I wore a sweater, purple trousers, and black Chelsea boots. I also had some fun with my makeup and added some purple eyeshadow to my bottom lash line! I ended up being a little too warm in my coat (I definitely didn't need it in the studio), so if I could change one thing, I'd have worn a lighter coat that was easier to carry.

What time is the Saturday Night Live dress rehearsal?

Image via Will Heath/NBC

For the Saturday Night Live dress rehearsal on Saturday, we had to be checked into the NBC Studios store by 6:30 pm. Once we were all lined up in numerical order, it got a little tricky because they moved us in groups of ten through security, into a room, and up the stairs. This whole process took about an hour and a half because of how many people there were. But once we got upstairs and into the elevators, it was a quick shot up into the studio and into our seats!

Another important thing I'll point out: through no fault of anyone, we ended up getting jumbled in the elevator, which meant I got pushed back to number 18 instead of number 12, and got a worse seat. It was still a good view, but it was admittedly not as good as it could have been.

What happens during the SNL dress rehearsal?

Image via Will Heath/NBC

Once we were seated, the party began! This was definitely the coolest part of the whole experience, but not in the way I expected. I loved seeing Ayo Edebiri (especially since we could see her before she came on camera) and Jennifer Lopez, but my favorite part was how the whole crew worked together. As soon as the show had a commercial break, everyone was rearranging the sets and moving cameras.

I spent the better part of a decade doing theater, and have so much respect for all the crew members who put this show on every single week! It felt like there was a role for everything: someone held a flashlight the whole night, the hair and makeup artists made sure the cast looked perfect, and there was even a designated employee who grabbed Ayo's hand and ran her offstage for her quick change every. Single. Time.

The biggest different between SNL dress rehearsal and the live show is that we got to see about 45 minutes of extra content! The dress rehearsal is the actors' and writers' chance to see what an audience resonates with. Our version of the Weekend Update featured a lot of banter about which bits landed and which ones should have gotten more laughs, and overall, the energy in the room felt just a bit more relaxed.

The most memorable skits were the Dune 2 popcorn bucket pre-tape, where Ayo Edebiri and Marcello Hernandez sang about wanting to lose their virginity to the unfortunately-designed merch (which went viral last week), and the School Hypnotist sketch, which was the absolute best use of Ayo's stage presence. Overall, I really enjoyed getting to see the SNL dress rehearsal, and I'm definitely going to put in for more SNL tickets throughout the rest of the season!

Quiet luxury had a beautiful run in 2023, but the mob wife aesthetic has entered the style group chat and is telling everyone their days of embracing side character energy is over. When I think of this trend, I can picture Elvira Hancock from Scarface and Carmela Soprano from The Sopranos in all of their glamorous glory. Also, while she may not have been a mob wife exactly, we can't forget Fran Drescher's style in The Nanny her gaudy and expressive style continues to have impactful influence.

A slow cooker is your best friend when it comes to feeding a crowd, and there is no better time to put it to good use than Super Bowl Sunday! These Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos are so rich and tender, from the flavors cooking together low and slow all day. Making the taco shells crunchy is entirely optional but totally worth it. It’s one additional step that makes a huge difference, and might have you adding them to your regular weeknight dinner repertoire, too!

For this recipe, you can use a variety of bell peppers – each color offers a different flavor and adds dimension to the tacos. And, if you don’t have a slow cooker, you can make this on your stovetop, too, as more of a skillet-style fajita, by sautéing the bell peppers and onion over high heat to get a great char. Cook the chicken separately, then toss them together with the taco seasoning. If you’re looking for some great veggie options you can try my Sweet Potato or Mushroom Tacos too – there’s truly something for everyone!

This is also one of those slow cooker Super Bowl recipes that you can freeze and save for later. These tasty tacos can be made ahead of time and stored in freezer-friendly containers, so you can thaw them in the fridge the day you want to eat them, then heat them up when dinner time rolls around. A simple trick that I use is to store tortillas in the freezer too, so I always have them on hand. When I want to reheat them, I pop them in the microwave for 15-30 seconds. Easy peasy! So, no matter what celebration comes your way, you’ll be prepared having these tacos on-hand.

If you’re looking for something sweet to bring your meal to the end zone, there’s no better play in your game plan than these Double Chocolate Football Brownies – they are an absolute winner, and utterly delicious too!

Ingredients for Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos with Oven-Baked Crunchy Shells

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 1/2-2 pounds chicken breast, sliced into very thin strips
  • 1 red onion, sliced into thin strips
  • 3 bell peppers, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 12 ounce can black beans, rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice plus additional lime wedges for topping
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil or olive oil
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 10-12 8 inch tortillas (corn or flour work)
  • 2-4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 12 tablespoons shredded Mexican-style cheese

Tutorial: Watch How To Make Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos

It can be hard to decide on which slow cooker Super Bowl recipes to make for your crew, but these Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos make the choice so easy. Each bite brings a different flavor that's super addicting. Everyone will be asking for the recipe!

How to Make Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos with Oven-Baked Crunchy Shells

  1. Lightly coat the bowl of the slow cooker with cooking spray, or two tablespoons of olive oil.
  2. Add the chicken, onion, bell peppers, and black beans to the slow cooker.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the lime juice, oil, garlic, taco seasoning, and salt.
  4. Pour the mixture over chicken, onions, and peppers and toss to coat well.
  5. Cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours or on low for 4-6 hours, or until chicken is cooked through.

Assembling the Slow Cooker Tacos

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Place the corn tortillas on a half-sheet baking pan, or similar size baking sheet, lined with aluminum foil.
  3. Drizzle enough olive oil over the tortillas to evenly coat each side of the shell with olive oil.
  4. Place about 1 tablespoon of cheese along with about 1/3 cup of the chicken mixture onto 1 half of the tortilla so that the other half can fold over; exact amounts will vary based on the size of the tortilla used.
  5. Repeat until all the tortillas are filled and folded.
  6. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, then flip the tacos over and cook about 10 more minutes or until both sides are crispy.
  7. Remove the tacos from the oven and once they are cool enough to handle, add toppings and a fresh squeeze of lime onto the tacos and enjoy while they are hot.
  8. Top with your favorite toppings like Cotija cheese, fresh salsa, fresh cilantro, chopped guacamole, and sour cream

Check out my favorite go-to, no-mayo slaw to serve with these crunchy tacos available in my cookbook, Everyday Celebrations From Scratch, which is on SALE now! Get your copy in time before your next celebration!
