Renters, Rejoice! 2 Ways to Transform Your Itty Bitty Bathroom

Around these parts, we’re pretty much color-obsessed. Adding swatches of bright color to everything we can get our hands on is par for the course. So, when we decided to team up with Lowe’s to give my boring beige apartment a DIY makeover, simply adding color was top of mind. And what better place to add a splash of color than the splashiest place in your home? ;) Not only will we show you two totally different ways to use color in this transformation, but we’ll also create lots of new areas for keeping bathroom essentials on hand.

My husband David and I live in a one-bedroom but, miraculously, we have two full bathrooms. We also have a lot of friends and siblings who like to crash with us often, so even though we don’t have a guest bedroom, we do have a guest bath! Even though we’re lucky to have two bathrooms, they’re both fairly small and don’t offer a ton in the way of storage and organization. Scroll on to see how we turned one bathroom into a floral, green, tropical wonderland and the other one into a cool blue zone perfect for minimalists.

Before we get to these gorgeous water closets, a little more about this apartment makeover series: We’ve teamed up with Lowe’s to transform my boring, un-decorated apartment into a home that truly reflects my (and my husband’s) personal style. Not only have we stocked up on plenty of decor items and DIY materials from our local Lowe’s, but we’ve tapped into their style team to get advice on how to coordinate the new with the old and how to better define space with a few simple tricks. Check out the whole series right here to see how my apartment gets totally transformed, room by room.

Read on to see how we fancied up two tiny bathrooms!

TROPICAL RAINFOREST BATHROOM

That’s right. I’m calling this one the Tropical Rainforest, but without the humidity and mosquitoes, of course. I wanted to create a nature-infused space to start the day. Though the bedroom is where we wake up, the bathroom is really where the day tends to start. For me, a day doesn’t even begin until I’ve showered, brushed my teeth and taken my pup Turkey for a walk. To create a rejuvenating and refreshing space to really wake up, I wanted it to feel lush, green and alive — hence, the tropical rainforest theme. By mixing shades of green decor with actual greenery, I was able to achieve just what I set out to do. And now this space is a great place to start the day. (P.S. Stay tuned for the super calm ocean-inspired bedroom that coordinates perfectly with this!)

As you can see in the before and after, a little paint, coordinated textiles and on-the-wall organization and plants can go a long way.

Step 1: PAINT

As with any room upgrade, the first step is to paint your walls. I chose a warmer green tone that made me think of vacation vibes: Organic Green, from Lowe’s collab with HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams (the exact color is FF 11 Organic Green SW 6732). Be sure to choose a paint that is bathroom-friendly, meaning it can handle moisture and condensation.

Step 2: BRING IN GREENERY

Next, we decided to bring in some greenery. I love these leafy greens that are super hearty, no matter what the season. We have the same ones in our kitchen, in fact. They have the power of making a space feel cozy and alive, and they’re not bad on the eyes either ;) Head to your local Lowe’s to check out their nursery department — they’ve got tons of ferns, palms and other lovely options to add life to your space.

Step 3: ADD IN COORDINATING LINENS

You can’t go halfway in the color department. The point of this design was to make the space feel more refreshing and calming. On the towel front, we like to keep a his and hers approach, so we went with one dark green towel and one light green. Top it off with a few hand towels and you’re good to go.

Step 4: MAKE A JEWELRY ORGANIZER

When it comes to accessories, I’m a super visual person. Jewelry boxes have never done the job — I can never find what I’m looking for, or I forget certain things even exist. In the past, I’ve simply stuck push pins in the wall to hang necklaces. Now, it’s time to upgrade that hack and make an on-the-wall jewelry organizer that doubles as decor. Check out the video below to see how it’s done!

Did you catch all those steps? If not, here’s the breakdown.

Materials:
– 12×12-inch piece of wood (we got ours cut at Lowe’s)

– sanding block

– painter’s tape

– paint brushes

– screw driver

– drill

– various knobs (we used crystal knobs, porcelain + nickel knobs, brass + porcelain knobs and white cabinet knobs)

– pale green paint (CC 01 Recycled Glass SW 7747)

– white paint (FF 17 Ibis White SW 7000)

Instructions:

1. Sand all sides of your wooden square.

2. Drill holes in the wood! This is where your knobs will go. You can go with a grid design or just drill them randomly, which is what we did.

3. Make sure to also drill two holes at the top for hanging.

4. Tape and paint! Use painter’s tape to create a diagonal design. Let the first color paint dry, then move the tape over and paint the second color. Let dry, then remove tape.

5. Add in the knobs. Use a screwdriver to screw them in on both sides. Done and done!

As you can see, we also added a few hooks directly into the wall to create as much jewelry display space as possible. And how fly are those wall planters?!

We used Rust-Oleum spray paint to paint these metal garment hooks gold and complemented them with three white robe hooks.

Step 5: DESIGN AND ORGANIZATION DETAILS

Finally, a few design details will finish this scene off. On the sink, make sure your toothbrushes, Q-tips and everyday makeup essentials are at the ready. Our shelves are filled with bins for organization, extra towels and more. And on the floor, we’ve got a cushy aqua polyester bath rug.

Personalize your bathroom by adding photos and other decorative elements on your shelves. As you can see, the more plants, the merrier ;)

We even dotted the windowsill with a little family of succulents. So fun!

Treat yourself to a tub tray for when you really need some R&R.

MINIMALIST GUEST BATHROOM

For the guest bath, we wanted to take a very minimal approach. The less clutter, the better! The big challenge in here is actually finding space. This bathroom didn’t come with a mirror or any shelving, so our guests have to crowd all of their things on the back of the toilet or on the window sill. We wanted to solve that, and also create a space that feels clean and calm.

Step 1: PAINT

Surprise, surprise, the first step is painting the walls. We chose a crisp, cool gray for this room (HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams, FF 19 Upward SW 6239) to make it feel a little more spacious than it actually is.

Step 2: INSTALL A DIY VANITY

As I mentioned, this bathroom had no mirror or shelving. So, the big challenge here was figuring out how to invent a vanity! First, we installed this brush nickel rectangular bathroom mirror. We paired the mirror with a matching glass bathroom shelf for at least a little space to house bathroom essentials and a dopp kit. How handy is that?

Step 3: ADD A SECOND TOWEL BAR

To further increase space, we added a second towel bar. Obviously, this is great for hanging additional towels, especially if you have multiple guests. The other way we were thinking it could be used is as a mini closet. Guests can hang up their clothes and let them steam a bit while they shower and get ready in the morning. We used this polished chrome towel bar by Kohler.

Looking pretty darn good!

Even this brass + beige shower is looking better with a little gray blue paint next to it.

And there you have it! Two bathrooms completely transformed by color.

Home decor trends come and go but some of them stand the test of time, and good designers seem to capture exactly where that line is drawn. Shawn and Tina Taylor, the adorable husband-and-wife dream team behind L.A. design firm Dacotah Studio, create stylish, comfortable homes that feel timeless and effortlessly put together.

The pair met at the bakery Bread Lounge in downtown LA, at separate tables. "We struck up a conversation and found out we were in industries that mirrored one another. Shawn was doing customization for brands and I was working in fashion," says Tina. (The bakery catered their daughter's first birthday.) Now Tina brings her eye for design while Shawn manages their interior projects for Dacotah, like their latest project in the eclectic Silver Lake neighborhood, where they had their first date. They beautifully remodeled a home built in 1938 for a modern family and it offers so much inspiration.

BEFORE

Before the remodel, the home left A LOT to be desired -- think boob lighting and icky yellow walls. The double doors shown here are mid-century cool but the entry design is pretty sad and dated. Tina and Shawn truly modernized it and created a sanctuary for the couple and their baby.

AFTER

Their inspiration? "Tulum! Our clients were so excited about this specific area and were inspired by Mexico. They love postmodernism design and they are a bit of a maximalist at heart," says Tina. "We wanted to keep the design pretty neutral so we could balance the design and art."

Here's the entry now -- amazing, right?! The whole house feels serene and tailored while embracing the beautiful LA weather and views. Shawn and Tina used earthy, natural materials to keep it timeless and took advantage of the terraced hillside for planting and lounging with drought-tolerant plants.

Here are 12 ideas I took away from their gorgeous design that I'll be bringing into my own home, or future home!

Home Decor Ideas À La Dacotah Studio

'70s Modern

"We wanted to preserve the older architectural details, which had tons of character and charm and looked beautiful with the newer materials we selected," says Shawn. I'm loving these classic modern sofas in a pop of orange. The OGs were designed by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset in the 1970s and go for more than $5K but you can find more affordable options inspired by the original. The color scheme here is on point without feeling overly trendy.

"If you are going to play with trends, do it in a way that can be swapped out every so often (e.g., rugs, artwork, accent chairs), rather than going too trendy on the hard materials like countertops, tiles, etc," says Tina. The coffee table they found vintage in Palm Springs and the artwork is designed by pop artist Steve Harrington.

Sculptural Lamps

Lamps can make such an impact in a room. This black table lamp from Jonathan Entler stands out like an art piece, as does this Hem Puffy chair. This Wayfair sculptural table lamp and Article lounge chair have a similar effect at a lower price point. We can't all afford high-end pieces but a few key pieces here and there that we love is also a good investment.

Transitional Flooring

"We used earthy. natural materials, mimicking the Yucatan/Tulum region of Mexico," says Tina. The porcelain kitchen flooring transitions to maple wood flooring throughout the home. I love the lighter natural woods mixed with the stucco and stone, creating unique moments that separate the spaces.

Wishbone Chairs

The first time I saw Hans Wegner's Wishbone Chair (1949) I was smitten. I have two chairs inspired by the original that I splurged on more than a decade ago at HD Buttercup. They are the pieces I still hold on to and always get compliments on — a true test of a classic design that never goes out of style.

Maple Cabinets

There's so much to love here: the durable Taj Mahal Quartzite slab tile, the vertical window that frames the hedges, the clean-lined shelf, and the continuation of maple on the cabinets. "The kitchen cabinets were maple wood and the stain was natural, which was more cost-effective while maintaining that beautiful, natural look," says Tina.

Outdoor Living

I will never not buy or rent a home that doesn't have tons of natural light. I love how the kitchen feels seamless with the outdoors, bringing in tons of light but also making it easier to entertain outdoors. The pendants echo the table lamp in the living room while the rope-backed bar stools are total Tulum vibes.

William Sonoma Cambria stool has a similar aesthetic. This trio pendant by Plato is also a showstopper.

Warm Bedding

I'm slowing phasing out of my blue phase. These mix-and-match organic sheets from Morrow Goods are a warmer upgrade.

Built-In Shelves

Built-in shelves are looking more sleek these days. This curved maple built-in continues the design story in such a stunning way.

Bath Planters

Bring the outdoors in...to your bath. Love this built-in planter for bringing clean-air plants into your self-care haven. The zig-zag tile is also a dreamy effect.

Terrazzo

I'm been obsessed with terrazzo for quite some time and adore how they use it here on the flooring. The speckled colors are just *speechless* and add an unexpected design element to the whole serene aesthetic. Never boring!

Brass

This whole look just slays but I especially love the brass bath towel bar inside the shower, creating more of a spa-like feeling inside. Also a ceramic vase with flowers are especially lovely for you or your guests.

Asymmetry

I love the organic effect of this brass mirror and clay pendants — as Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi said, "There are no sharp corners in nature." West Elm has a similar mirror design you can shop, too.

Fans who were left on the edge of their seats after watching the first part of AHS: Delicate last year won't have to wait longer for part two! Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian are gearing up to pick up where their characters left off, and sinister twists are about to get much darker. While we know the focus revolves around their interactions, we can't wait to see how Gilmore Girls star Matt Czuchry fits into what's sure to be a big reveal.

Read on for a mini recap of part one of AHS: Delicateand learn all the juicy details about part two!

Recap of Kim Kardashian's involvement in AHS: Delicate

Image via FX Networks

Kim Kardashian as 'Siobhan' in "American Horror Story: Delicate"

As good as Kim Kardashian is as the icy publicist Siobhan on AHS: Delicate, don't expect her to watch herself onscreen. She appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live yesterday and explained why she hasn't seen herself in clips of the show when Jimmy Kimmel played and unsettling one.

Her character can be seen intimidating a fertility doctor to do her bidding as she pierces the top of his neck with a long orange fingernail. She smiled before saying "It's so funny, I can't watch it back," and then added, "I get so nervous."

She even talked about the difference between filming for TV and working as an actual actress. She said, "I called my sisters and I go, 'Guys. You — not to say you'd ever want to get into acting — but you are so lucky you can wake up and just, we can sit in bed and film, and you don't have to get up...like there is no schedule."

However, it seems like the budding actress took her new schedule in stride because Star Trek actor and AHS co-star Zachary Quinto applauded Kardashian’s acting chops.

“I did a cameo on this season of ‘American Horror Story’ and I got to meet her,” the actor told People. “She was so lovely and warm and, really, I don’t think she needs my advice.” Quinto added, sharing that Kardashian, was “really in her element” on set and he was “really impressed by her spirit and her openness…I really look forward to seeing this season because I think she’s gonna do a wonderful job.”

Recap of AHS: Delicate Part 1

Image via FX Networks

The first part of AHS: Delicate premiered on FX September 20, 2023 and centered around actress Anna Victoria Alcott's desire to become a mother. Played by Emma Roberts, viewers watched as her husband Dexter Harding (played by Matt Czuchry) was supportive of her IVF procedure so the couple could conceive their first child. Despite the previous struggles, the procedure is a success and the happy couple learn they have a baby on the way.

However, things go horribly wrong when Anna starts being followed and eventually experiences a violent miscarriage during her first trimester. Somehow the baby actually survives, but Anna still experiences a series of strange hallucinations and events. From losing her hair to vomiting a foreign object, she starts to wonder if something is wrong with her baby. There's also the fact that she told her publicist Siobhan (played by Kim Kardashian) that she'd do anything to remain at the top of the her career.

What's revealed is that a baby cult does exist and Dexter's dead first wife knew all about it. However, the cult still looks at him as a threat so it's only a matter of time before they close in.

If you need a refresher, catch up on the first part of AHS: Delicate on Hulu and be sure to check out the eery trailer for a look at part two! Also, get your hands on a copy of Danielle Valentine’s novel Delicate Condition to see how the story truly unfolds.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part Two | Official Trailer - Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian | FX

We suspected Siobhan may have a darker role than Anna thinks and the trailer confirms it. As Anna gets further along in her pregnancy, it's hinted that her growing baby may not be 'normal' and there's nothing she'll be able to do about it.

We're crossing our fingers for Anna and Dexter, but the baby cult may have the final say in AHS: Delicate Part 2.

The first portion of AHS: Delicate Part 2 premiered on FX April 3, 2024, but the series will come to a close beginning April 24. All we can say is things are about to get extremely bumpy 👀.

What do you think will happen during the final moments of AHS: Delicate Part 2? Let us know in the comments!

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
