3 Effortless Ways to Elevate Your Denim Jacket in Seconds

Spring, summer and fall, a denim jacket is an effortless any-season essential (and cornerstone to every on-point lazy girl outfit formula) that can add a touch of casual cool to any ensemble in seconds. Like a good pair of jeans, a classic chambray topper is a piece you’ll hang onto forever, and once you find the perfect cut and fit, it’s game over. But just like all your much-loved everyday basics, a denim jacket’s versatility can become somewhat daunting, and you might find yourself stuck in a style rut, teaming it with the same duds day after day. Style Resolutions is here to send those sartorial blahs packin’, and reignite that passion for your favorite off-duty outer layer. Below, we’re serving up three RN ways to rock this timeless piece, whether you’re getting your girl boss on or straight-up chillaxin’.

How to Wear a Denim Jacket for Work

There’s just something that feels stuffy about wearing a blazer when temps are hovering around a balmy 80 degrees, no matter what your dress code says. Keep those free-wheelin’ summer feels alive even when you’re on duty by draping a denim jacket around your shoulders. To balance out the casual-cool appeal, team the topper with a crisp button-down shirt and a sophisticated midi skirt with a folksy floral print that feels polished rather than prissy. Skip the expected black pumps and strut your stuff into your nine-to-five in show-stopping yellow suede sandals, and up the fierce factor with architectural drop earrings.

How to Wear a Denim Jacket for a Night Out

Channel your inner ‘90s style goddess by taking your denim jacket for a spin on your next GNO with a slinky slip dress that is the epitome of grunge glamour. Bar hopping is better when you have a set of dramatic velvet platforms in tow (these babies were meant to be shown off), so say sayonara to your go-to stilettos and block heels. Before heading out the door, tack on a pair of asymmetric earrings and a bright geometric crossbody that reads street-style royalty. Best dressed? You’ve got this, girl.

How to Wear a Denim Jacket for the Weekend

Bomber jackets are rad, but sometimes you just can’t beat a classic. Whether you’re hitting up a crafters’ market or noshing on tacos with your crew, a denim jacket with endless laid-back vibes is so key for weekend adventures. Style it with an embellished tank and printed joggers for just the right balance of Insta-worthy and lazy-girl aesthetics, then work in a few RN accessories, like metallic slingbacks and a bright bandana, for a bit of added panache.

If there’s one pattern with more staying power than plaid, stripes, and polka dots combined, it’s definitely leopard. As you look ahead to the upcoming ho-ho-holidays, this feline-inspired print will be the strategic piece in shaking up your winter wardrobe for everything from the office Christmas party to a blowout NYE bash. Practice moderation this season with pieces that deliver just the right amount of “rawr” without entering OTT territory. Ahead, we’re sharing three non-intimidating ways to pull off leopard, according to your fave celebrities.

How to Rock a Leopard Shift

Former SNL cast member Sasheer Zamata’s shimmery leopard shift dress was the real MVP at Kate Spade New York’s most recent fashion week presentation. Pair this long-sleeved cheetah print frock with a sleek red-orange coat and mink fur loafers that deserve a double take. Last but not least, a floral embroidered ladylike satchel and celestial-inspired drop earrings will have you channeling your inner Hollywood starlet before you know it. How to Rock a Leopard coat

Start taking notes, bad betches. Bella Hadid’s DGAF style is yours for the taking. Peep this textured faux fur topper that’s easy on the eyes — and wallet. Adopt a rocker ‘tude with a Nirvana t-shirt, faded black frayed-hem jeans, and scene-stealing star ankle boots from style influencer Danielle Bernstein’s debut footwear line, Archive Shoes. Transition your getup from day to night with a hands-free belt bag, a layered Bing Bang pendant necklace, and a pair of Le Specs’ now ubiquitous cat-eye frames. (Photo via Alo Ceballos/GC Images)

How to Rock a Leopard Mini

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander successfully demonstrates how to incorporate leopard into your day-to-day uniform. On the prowl or off, this jacquard weave wrap-over skirt will always do you right. Teamed with a mini pebbled leather saddle bag and effortless Breton stripes, the result is more Kate Middleton, less tough-girl-in-training. But perhaps we spoke too soon? The addition of a denim jacket, contemporary hoops, and towering lace-up booties, and you’re ready for a night out on the town. (Photo via Pierre Suu/GC Images)

Power red has been dubbed the official color of fall 2017. (Millennial pink, you’ve finally met your match.) Perhaps it’s the rise of a new #girlboss, feminist-empowered era, or maybe it’s the ‘round-the-clock styling potential of this ubiquitous hue that’s keeping it around for longer than a season. Either way, this feisty and fiery shade packs no shortage of sass. Knowing how to successfully rock a kick-butt head-to-toe red lewk? Now that’s another story. We look to regional It girls, including Gigi Hadid, Olivia Palermo, and Chrissy Teigen, for tips on mastering power red like a boss.

Pantsuit Nation

You need not be the first lady or a model like Gigi Hadid to rock a power red pantsuit when out and about town like a true HBIC. The key here is to introduce non-red statement pieces — like an ivory bow-blouse and fringy yellow drop earrings — that work to counterbalance the pool of red. Working gals: Ditch the corporate schmorporate guise with one of OAD’s geometric satchels and some noir pointy-toe pumps that were made for the nine-to-five and five-to-nine grind. (Photo via Sonia Recchia/Getty)

Clockwise from top left: Cuyana Silk Bow Blouse ($185), BaubleBar Bonita Drop Earrings ($42), H&M Blazer ($50), H&M Suit Pants ($35), OAD New York Mini Kit Zip Satchel in True Black ($350), La Canadienne Montreal Falone ($395)

Power Red Accessories

Bad betches everywhere, look what you made us do. Yes, power red can be intimidating, but a little bit of this mighty hue can work wonders in the sartorial department. Olivia Palermo’s style chops aside, it’s her showstopping strappy red steppers that are the real MVP here. A crazy bachelorette weekend is as good of a time as any to show off your sartorial prowess, starting with a silk mini dress and a textured leopard print topper. Enter hot-to-trot territory with a pair of trend-right OTK boots, a set of red and gold u-shaped earrings, and a slogan tote that will fo’ sure turn some heads. NIGHTTIME Frills

Take it from Chrissy Teigen, the queen of date night dressing: Frills aplenty will always do you right. Our favorite Hollywood starlet (and red haute mama) doesn’t shy away from embracing power red to the max — she brings the drama en route to dinner with her slinky red top and flowy trousers. For your next GNO, style this femme red blouse from & Other Stories alongside streamlined black culottes for instant boardroom-to-bar appeal. Allow a pair of VERAMEAT’s celestial-inspired gold half-moon earrings and some crimson-soled pumps to lend just the right amount of zhoosh to your look. Last, but not least, we recommend Madewell’s fuss-free compact leather crossbody bag that’s made to fit just the essentials. (Photo via Raymond Hall/GC Images)

Clockwise from top left: & Other Stories Ruffle Blouse ($85), VERAMEAT Lunar Face Wire Art Earring ($140), Madewell The Chain Crossbody Bag ($88), COS Chunky Heel Pumps ($133), The Group by Babaton Beecroft Pant ($98)

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
