Meryl Streep Makes Her ‘Big Little Lies’ Debut in HBO’s New Teaser
During the 2019 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 6, HBO debuted a promo teasing new seasons of several shows set to air this year, including a first official look at Meryl Streep in Big Little Lies season 2.
“I want to know what happened that night,” Streep’s character, Mary Louise, says in the brief clip, as the camera cuts to a worried-looking Madeline (Reese Witherspoon). The scene then flashes to a police line-up of Madeline, Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz), and Renata (Laura Dern).
The super-quick scene hints at the story set to unfold with Streep’s character as she tries to find out what happened to her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard), who, spoiler alert, died at the end of season 1.
Previously, we’ve seen tiny snippets of the HBO show’s second season, including a look at Witherspoon throwing an ice cream cone at Streep. “I might or might not have thrown an ice cream cone at Meryl Streep — in a scene, ’cause she made me mad,” Witherspoon told Good Morning America in September. “I think it’s one of the top moments of my entire career. For real.”
Kidman also previously posted a photo of herself and Streep in character, sharing a sweet family moment with Celeste’s kids. (Kidman’s real kids will also make a small cameo in the show.)
Season 2 of Big Little Lies will go beyond author Liane Moriarty’s original 2014 book, so much of what will take place is still unknown. So far, no specific release date has been set.
