Emma Roberts’ Hairstylist Teaches Us the Perfect Lazy-Girl Date-Night ‘Do
Now that it’s February, you’ve probably started thinking about a certain chocolate heart-filled holiday that is quickly approaching. Whether you’ve got a date with your boo on the calendar or are planning the ultimate Galentine’s bash, don’t forget to add the perfect holiday hair look to your TDL. Maybe in the past, you’ve gone with a pricey salon blowout or a perfectly styled braided updo that took forever to pull off. Well, forget all of that. This year, celeb hairstylist Nikki Lee is teaching us how to pull off a knotted hairstyle that is super, duper easy and looks unbelievable. “Sometimes a braid can look a little juvenile, if not done properly. A knot can read sexy and effortless,” Nikki, who works with Emma Roberts, Julianne Hough and Sarah Hyland (to name a few), tells Brit + Co. Here are the deets and step-by-step instructions for how to pull it off.
Step 1: To get started, you’ll want to add some textured waves. Nikki, who co-owns LA’s Nine Zero One salon, recommends using the T3 Twirl Convertible 1.25 inch curling iron for the right size curl. “You want the wave to be effortless and textured,” she says. Use the tool to curl large sections of hair, always with the ends left out. When releasing the strands, pull the iron straight down to keep your wave from becoming too big and bouncy. Next, take a flat iron (Nikki’s favorite is the T3 SinglePass Luxe 1 inch Straightening and Styling Iron) and run it through the bottom three inches of the hair. Work quickly as you don’t want it perfectly straight.
Step 2: Now that the texture is set, split your hair into two sections in the back. Cross over each other and pull like you’re making a knot. Repeat that step again and secure the bottom with a small, clear elastic.
Step 3: To boost the volume of the style, pull pieces of the knot out. “This is a great way to wear your hair if you can’t decide if you want it up or down, and it only takes a few minutes,” Nikki says. “I really love it because from the front it gives the illusion that you have a lob or short hair, but in the back you have a fun, flirty element with the knot!”
