Bestselling author Rebecca Ross is most well-known for writing the acclaimed Letters of Enchantment series (which was a Dakota Johnson book club pick!!). Now, its first installment, the romantasy book Divine Rivals, is officially being adapted for the big screen.

Following the publication of Divine Rivals in April 2023, fans online went wild. More specifically, the #BookTok community caused the work to go viral, cementing its success. In fact, the Letters of Enchantment series actually reigned on the New York Times bestsellers list for over 125 weeks and even won a Goodreads Choice Award for Readers' Favorite Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction the same year.

So, it makes sense why Divine Rivals sparked a bidding war among studios as they fought to secure the rights to the book. In the end, Paramount Pictures came out on top and will now be turning the story into a movie.

Here's everything we know about Paramount's Divine Rivals movie.

Is Divine Rivals going to be a movie?

Amazon Prime

Yes, we're getting a Divine Rivals movie! It's still very early in the pre-production process, so we don't have a release date yet. But we're hoping to see it in 2026.

What is the book Divine Rivals about?

The story is "an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak and the unparalleled power of love," according to the official synopsis. The tale is set in the midst of an ancient war between gods and centers on 18-year-old Iris Winnow, a journalist whose brother goes missing while fighting on the front lines.

Her mother is devastated, and in an effort to hold the fort down for her family, Iris sets her sights on getting a columnist promotion. However, her rival at the paper, a handsome young man named Roman Kitt, winds up getting the letters Iris intended for her brother, and they unexpectedly fall in love.

"Expelled into the middle of a mystical war, magical typewriters in tow, can their bond withstand the fight for the fate of mankind and, most importantly, love?"

It seems that fans of the classic 1998 film You've Got Mail, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, will definitely enjoy Divine Rivals (and the upcoming movie), as long as they're also into a bit of magic.

Who's in the Divine Rivals cast?

We don't have a Divine Rivals cast yet, but there are plenty of fan casts to tide us over until we get an official announcement. Lily Collins, Danielle Rose Russell, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Nicholas Galitzine, Whitney Peak, Jayme Lawson, Jonah Hauer-King, and David Corenswet are all popular choices!

Who else is involved in Paramount's Divine Rivals movie?

Now that Paramount Pictures has secured the rights to the novel, Sofia Alvarez, who wrote Netflix's adaptation of To All The Boys I've Loved Before, is set to pen the script. Pouya Shahbazian, who worked on the Divergent movies, and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for producing the G.I. Joe and Transformers film series, will also serve as producers.

"This has been such a hard secret to keep (I've been sitting on this news since last August), but I can now say... Divine Rivals is being adapted for film with Paramount Pictures!" Rebecca Ross said on Instagram following the project's announcement.

"I could not be more thrilled, and I'm honored that Sofia Alvarez will be writing the script," she continues. "A huge thank you to my producers–Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Pouya Shahbazian–for, first of all, loving the book and Iris and Roman's story, and for seeing a vision of what it could become on the screen."

Are we getting a new Divine Rivals book?

Who will be cast in the film adaptation remains to be seen, and no release date for the movie has been shared yet. However, fans can look forward to reading a new prequel, Wild Reverence, which will be released in September.

And as you wait for Divine Rivals to hit the big screen, you can always revisit Rebecca Ross' original book, available for purchase on Amazon.
