Over the years, I’ve tried more than a few ways to create a flawless cat eye. I took a stab at freehanding it (which works approximately never for me), used a stencil, tried a specifically designed tool, or even broke out the trusty credit card trick, which became my go-to. Lining up the edges of the card with the tail of my brow and the outer corner of my eye makes it relatively easy to trace a clean cat eye line, but it’s also inconvenient. I mean, who wants to keep their credit card at the ready when doing makeup?
I have dreamed of a product that was designed for this purpose and could fit right in my makeup bag. When I got my hands on the e.l.f. Line & Define Eye Tape ($2), I realized that my dreams were answered and became pretty quickly obsessed after the first use. I’d tried the tape hack before — and it works — but removing the tape was always painful and required an immediate touch-up. This tape, however, was created to hack the cat eye and peel off gently without any irritation.
The pre-sized tape works best, in my opinion, when used with a liquid eyeliner (versus a gel) because it’s easier to line up against the tape. After aligning it with the outer corner of my eye and the end of my brow, I draw a short line, tapering the tip so it thins out at the end. I let it dry as I repeat on the other eye. As promised, I was able to peel off the tape without any uncomfortable tugging or pulling. I’m left with the cat eye of my dreams: a sharp, smooth, defined line that’s perfectly even on both sides. Finally.
