5 Must-Makes for a Doggie Day-cation

There are special days to honor almost everyone. We’ve got the classics like Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day, but then there are others like Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day or Pi(e) Day. Today we’re making up a special day honoring all of the canine companions out there for our very own Dog’s Day. Lucky for this pup, Toyota gave us the keys to the new RAV4 so that we could take little Turkey Temple to the beach for a doggy day-cation. Not sure what a day-cation is? Check out our solo day-cation and our date day-cation.

Hello! I’m Roxy, the DIY Editor at Brit + Co, and I am the fortuitous gal who got to take our office dog Turkey to the ocean, which he LOVED! The drive was mellow and Turkey was a happy camper. The car was awesome. You know that feeling when you put your foot on the gas pedal and it seems like the engine could take you anywhere? That’s what I felt when I was driving along the coast. So good!

Turkey chilled in the back seat cute as can be, and I was able to drive him safely to the beach. The Backup Camera feature was so great. I could see what was happening behind me without having to turn around and get Turkey all excited (he does that whole, “are-we-there-yet?” thing). Also, the 18-inch Alloy Wheels were perfect for the rough terrain in the lot at the beach.

The day was all about Turkey, so if you are a dog parent or sibling or sitter, we’ve got five DIYs for you to make your dog-pal’s day.

If I’m heading anywhere with a dog, I know I need to bring a few essentials on the road. From treats to poop bags to water, dogs need their own little travel bags and purses. We decided to make one that not only carries Turkey’s must-haves, but it also functions as a feeding station. A vintage vanity case did the trick.

We laser cut a board that perfectly fits on the little ledge inside and holds two bowls.

Dog-themed Carry-all

Remove the tray and you’ve got plenty of space for toys, treats and puppy attire.

Nom nom nom!

– rope

Nautical Toy

– fabric dye

Tools:

– scissors

Let’s make this thing!

First you need to dye your rope. We made a matching rope leash, so we dyed enough rope for both projects. For the toy, cut four pieces of rope that measure about 30 inches each. Mix your dye with water in a bucket and add the rope. When you achieve the color you want, rinse and dry the rope.

Next, knot the four pieces of rope together. Separate each strand of rope into four corners, and fold two opposites over to create loops. Weave one piece of rope from the side over-under and then the piece of rope from the opposite side under-over.

Pull all four ropes at once and you’ll see a woven square form. Repeat this step until you have toy that’s long enough for your pup. Tie in a knot once you’ve reached the end and trim the rough ends.

Turkey could not stop playing with this colorful toy!

– rope

Nautical Leash

– RIT dye

– rope clamps

– leash hook

Tools:

– scissors

– hammer

Using your dyed rope, cut three pieces that measure 2.5 yards and two pieces that measure about 30 inches.

Take the three long pieces and slide the leash hook through all of them. Fold over the rope and hammer the rope clamp in place. Braid the rope to the end.

Fold the rope into an appropriate-sized loop that will fit your hand. Use your other rope clamp to hold the loop in place.

Use the small lengths of rope to wrap around the metal clamps. Then tie them in place.

Love it!

Dog clothes can be hit or miss, but a bandana (or dogdana, as we like to call them) is always in style for a little tail-wagger. We used the spray-dye technique to make Turkey a tie-dyed ‘dana. Check out some of our other spray dye tutorials to see what other cool projects you can make with this fabric dye.

Bandana

Spray your bandana and let it dry. That’s it!

Puppy Treats

Like most dogs, Turkey adores the beach. So it’s important to have treats on hand so that he doesn’t run off into the distance later to be found walking barefoot on the beach paw-in-paw with some golden retriever. Since we’re honoring our petite hound friend, we went all out and made him homemade treats. Check out the full tutorial here!

We drove, we played, we whale-watched, and we ate with smiles on our faces (Turkey too). It was a ridiculously gorgeous day, perfect for a coastal cruise in the RAV4. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to try it out for this amazing doggie day-cation! Turkey agrees :)

Home decor and wellness creator Kelly Marcelo always wanted to be her own boss. “I never really wanted to have a job where I wouldn't be in control,” she says. She started a wedding photography business in college, added a photo booth rental business, and launched a t-shirt business with her brother. When the pandemic put events to a halt, she found herself at a crossroads. What to do next?

She decided to pour herself into her passion for home decor. She started posting several times a day on TikTok and finding a new outlet for her creativity. Within a few months, she had 10K followers, steadily built her following and hired a manager, and was recently chosen to decorate the White House for the holidays. “You have to ask that question, well, why not me?,” she says.

Check out Kelly’s colorful and creative world and how she’s making every move count in her business with the help of TurboTax, so she can focus on what she loves to do!

Don’t Wait for Perfection. In the first month of launch, Kelly’s goal was to post three times a day. “I was really trying to focus on getting as much out there at first, but then also being able to get that information to see what worked with people,” she recalls. That market research allowed her to build an audience, learn what her audience craved, and focus on the wins. “It was very intense at the beginning, and then I eased back. I'm like, ‘Okay, let me breathe, because it was not sustainable at all.’”

Refine and Strategize. To avoid burnout, she slowed her pace and stepped back to focus on the bigger picture. “I didn't pressure myself once I was on solid ground. I decided to focus more on refining the content, making it for the fun of it, and focusing on the strategy part.” Step back and analyze your learnings and decide how you want to move forward and grow.

Invest in Your Growth. Kelly joined a business accelerator for underrepresented creators in the middle of her journey that proved to be a smart strategic move. “I feel like that changed the whole course of where I am now, because once I was able to get support from them and talk to people directly after the program, that's when I got my biggest brand deal.”

Be Brave. “For me, it was recognizing that the fear was always going to be there,” says Kelly. “If you want to live a creative life, you're going to have to do something that's scary, and it's probably going to require steps that you don't want to take. For me, being on camera was very scary.” Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to take on moves that push your boundaries and help you develop new skills. Remember that being brave doesn't mean being fearless. It means acknowledging your fears but choosing to move forward despite them!

Anne Hathaway's The Idea of You just debuted with a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and now we're even more excited to see this 2024 movie! Anne's talked about her husband Adam Shulman during some of the press for the movie, which has us asking the question, "Who is Adam Shulman and how did they meet?" Well you might be interested to find out it's actually super similar to the onscreen meet-cute in her newest film.

In The Idea of You, we see two characters meet and fall in love at a music festival (Coachella to be specific). Well, you wouldn't believe it but Hathaway and Shulman's real life meet-cute is not that far off! Although Shulman wasn't in a boy band and Hathaway wasn't an eager audience member, they were both at film festival in Palm Springs when they met. Hmmm, coincidence right?!

Now fast forward to 2024, and Hathaway and Shulman are still together and as in love as ever! Hathaway said in a recent interview with Drew Barrymore, "I’m my own person, he’s his own person, and we choose to be together because we believe we make each other better and this union is something we both want to participate in." We're obsessed with them and we know that once you hear about their incredible love story, you will be too. See their full relationship timeline below!

While they've been happily married since 2012, he and their children remain mostly out of the spotlight. Here's what we do know: Shulman's been an actor since the early 2000s, he produced Hathaway's Song One, and he's now primarily a jewelry designer (he actually designed Hathaway's engagement ring himself). They're also both native New Yorkers, born and raised!

April 2008 — Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman Meet At A Palm Springs Film Festival

Anne Hathaway & her husband met through mutual friends at a film festival in Palm Springs in 2008, and Hathaway thought he was "the one" almost immediately. "I knew from the second I met him that he was the love of my life," she tells Harper's Bazaar UK. And after they met, their connection grew even stronger. Hathaway has talked about how her trust was broken in a previous relationship so falling in love with Shulman was a "ridiculous joyride."

After months of dating and being seen out and about by the paparazzi, the pair started attending award shows together in the latter portion of 2008. By January 2009, Shulman accompanied Hathaway, alongside her brother, to an event where she received the Desert Palm Achievement award for her work on Rachel Getting Married.

In an interview with Vogue, Hathaway says they "hit it off immediately, but it took us a pretty long time to get together." Well, we suppose the saying is true that when you know...you know. And clearly Hathaway was smitten immediately!

November 2011 to September 2012 — Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman Get Engaged and Tie the Knot

After three happy years of dating, the couple's rep confirmed they were engaged after Anne Hathaway was spotted wearing an engagement ring in early November 2011. In multiple interviews throughout the remainder of the year, Hathaway gushed about her new fiancée, and how content she was.

Then the couple said "I do" at a lovely ceremony along the stunning coast of Big Sur, California on September 29, 2012. According to The Hollywood Reporter, they had a luxurious ceremony at a private estate with 150 guests — talk about a BIG wedding! The guest list was reportedly made up of friends and family, meaning there were almost no celebrities or people from the industry invited. We love how private they are!

In the months following their wedding, Anne Hathaway won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables. Before accepting the award, Hathaway turned to embrace and kiss her date, hubby Adam Shulman. Later in her speech, Anne Hathaway says, "I want to thank my husband, by far and away the greatest moment of my life was when you walked into it. I love you so much."

January 2016 — Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman Are Expecting Their First Child

After being married for a few years, the pair announced they were pregnant with their first child! The news broke with the pair celebrating what looked like a Hawaiian beach baby-moon. In an Instagram post celebrating her pregnancy, Hathaway says, "Posting a bikini pic is a little out of character for me, but just now while I was at the beach I noticed I was being photographed. I figure if this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter)."

July 2019 — Anne Hathaway and Husband Adam Shulman Are Pregnant With Baby #2

After baby Jonathan comes baby #2, Jack! And this time, Anne Hathaway took it upon herself to announce her own pregnancy via Instagram once more. "It’s not for a movie...⁣⁣#2," the star says in the caption. "All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love."

Anne Hathaway has talked multiple times about how she really struggled with infertility. "Each time I was trying to get pregnant and it wasn’t going my way, someone else would manage to conceive," she says in an interview with theDaily Mail. "I knew intellectually that it didn’t happen just to torment me, but to be honest, it felt a little bit like it did."

December 2023 — Anne Hathaway Talks About Her Matching Tattoo With Her Husband

Today, Anne Hathaway & husband Adam Shulman maintain a fairly private life. Despite not divulging too much information in recent years, Hathaway recently revealed she actually shares a matching tattoo with her husband! "We actually have a tattoo," she tells Drew Barrymore. "The idea is that individually we’re whole, but together we’re more."

The star showed off her ink where you can see what resembles a "W" for "whole" one way, and "M" for "more" when flipped around. The actress continues, "I’m my own person. He’s his own person and we choose to be together because we believe we make each other better. And this union is something we both want to participate in.” Although they're their own independent people, they love connecting as a team because they're stronger together than they are separate. We love that sweet sentiment!

We're obsessed with this matching tattoo idea and think it is the perfect sign of their beautiful love story. We bet you're as in love with them as we are!

Want to be your own boss, but not sure where to start? Have a side hustle, but want to turn it into something more? Living a creative life in work and play takes dedication, inspiration, and time. But making time to hone in on your craft can boost your happiness and make you feel more fulfilled, not to mention lead to bigger opportunities. We tapped Dani Dazey, one of the most colorful interior, fashion, and print designers, to share her creative life and help you build yours.

In this reel, Dani shares how she makes every move count in her design business by focusing on what she does best, and letting TurboTax experts help her manage her taxes. Check it out!

Ready to take your creativity to the next level? Here are tips for building a dreamy creative life!

Find your niche. Be curious and explore hobbies that pique your interest, whether you want to become a pro at interior design, cooking, fashion, or some other field. Decide what makes you unique. “What's really cool about my brand being so focused on color, it seems niche, but it's actually a really broad spectrum. A lot of brands like to align themselves with color and joyfulness, and to me, color represents a happy disposition and a joyful living space,” says Dani.

Schedule creative time. If you have a 9 to 5, schedule time in the morning, after work or on weekends to explore your craft or run your business. Marking your calendar and making time to be creative will help you make sure you don’t let the chance slip by – the more you do, the more you discover your talents and build your expertise.

Don’t try to do it all. “When you're running your own business, you're essentially forced to wear all the hats,” says Dani. Being a small business owner can look like a one-woman show. Don’t try to do it all yourself. Instead, focus on what you love and let experts do the rest. Whether TurboTax experts prepare your tax return or you do it yourself, they guarantee their calculations are always 100% accurate, or they’ll pay any penalties.

Surround yourself with inspiration. Look for ways to build a creative community, visit exhibits and shops that resonate with you, go for a nature walk for inspiration – essentially become your own student and read books, take classes, and pull inspiration from everywhere. “What's so cool about interiors and fashion is there's such an overlap between inspiration,” says Dani, who’s inspired by vintage design and mixing different color schemes. Ask questions too – people with more experience are always happy to help and share with someone who has a similar passion.

Collaborate with others. Host a regular creative hang with friends, tap into a local creative community, find people online who you relate to who might want to collaborate on a project or promotion. This is a great way to get the word out about your unique offerings. Dani has turned her fashion business into an interior design and print business, collaborating with brands on wallpaper, shoe design, and more.

Don’t let failure stop you. Mistakes often lead to breakthroughs. Experiment with new ideas and techniques, and view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. You’ve got this! Don’t feel like you have to reach perfection before making the next move. Small business life is a journey of doing and learning. “I learned not to limit myself in what I think I can and can't do,” says Dani. “I always wanted to pursue interiors and I thought when I was younger that I had to pick a lane. But all these years later and letting go of those self-limiting thoughts, I ended up doing interiors and that took on a whole life of its own.”

Diversify your revenue streams. “A big part of being an entrepreneur is getting used to the ups and downs of running a small business, and the slow times,” says Dani. She soon learned to diversify streams of income and pursue other creative ventures, such as licensing her designs and renting out her spaces for photo shoots. “I would say really think about how you can capitalize on all the different things you're doing and get creative with that,” she adds.

Travel and explore. Have you ever traveled and not felt inspired? Not possible! See new perspectives and get out of your comfort zone and you’re sure to feel creative and inspired in the process. Travel means learning new things about yourself and what you want out of life. Tight on budget? Visit a new place in your area, have coffee with someone in your field, do something out of the norm to gain inspiration and try something new.

When you’re ready, make that big move. Dani spent six years doing apparel graphics for a corporation, until she gathered the courage to start her own clothing line. “That was probably my first really big move and I built that up on social media,” she says. She used social media to get the word out. “I used a lot of my spaces for photo shoots for my brand, so I would design really cool funky spaces and then people started to ask me if I did interiors,” she recalls.

Share your story. That brings us to having the confidence to share your work and your process. “When Instagram stories came out, I started to share my behind the scenes process,” says Dani. “And that was when people actually started to really connect with the brand. I realized that my superpower wasn't to make a fancy-looking brand and seem like it was already established. It was to embrace that I was this solopreneur at the time.”

This post has been updated.

A quiet, lesser known pocket of Beverly Hills known as Beverly Hills Post Office (BHPO) shares the same popular zip code but is tucked up in the hills north of BH proper, where you'll score scenic ocean views. Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn of celeb-loved L.A. design firm House of Rolison were tasked with reimagining a 1950s Beverly Hills home in the coveted neighborhood for a modern era.

Photo: Nils Timm

“It's our priority to maintain and enhance the original charm and soul of our homes,” says Leigh. Before the stunning reno, the home lacked a sense of flow with cramped rooms and a narrow kitchen, and had thick, dated carpeting throughout.

Photo: Nils Timm

“The home was a bit of a mish mosh of styles, and had not been updated in quite some time,” adds Leigh. “We wanted to give it a cohesive style, while bringing light to its show pieces.”

Photo: Nils Timm

Those show pieces included its wood vaulted ceilings that had been painted over, and the original fireplaces that had been closed and were no longer functioning properly.

Photo: Nils Timm

The House of Rolison team breathed new life into the home, adding additional square footage and natural light, maximizing the home's stunning ocean and city views.

Photo: Nils Timm

The fireplaces throughout the Beverly Hills home were restored, the ceiling stripped of its old paint, and the decor infused with a calming neutral earthy palette that grounds the design.

Photo: Nils Timm

“BHPO has a lot of renaissance revival homes and this home was much more traditional. We wanted to make the home feel more tied into the homes of the area, while giving it its own playful flare,” says Leigh.

Photo: Nils Timm

Leigh and Hahn let the home speak for itself, using restraint in terms of deconstruction and preserving a lot of the cool mid-century charm. The fireplaces exude warmth beyond raising the temperature.

Photo: Nils Timm

“There were sections of wood paneling, original to the home, that inspired a lot of the design. Funny enough, during deconstruction, the original paneling completely fell apart," says Hahn. "We ended up rebuilding it, in a way that was more flattering to the space, and made it feel much more elevated.”

Photo: Nils Timm

Bold natural stones are used in the kitchen and bath. “ It really gave a playful texture and refined the design in a way that really helped the final product sing,” says Hahn.

Photo: Nils Timm

This green on green is spectacular. Bathrooms are drenched in marble, and architectural details throughout give the home a luxury vibe while still feeling not too fussy and precious. "It's less uptight than contemporary but still playful and bold," says Hahn. Moody vignettes throughout add personality and uniqueness too.

Photo: Nils Timm

“We are known for combining styles that aren't necessarily supposed to be friends, but end up playing well together.” They did that a lot here with lighting and textures. "We would say it ended up being a more transitional style, which blends contemporary and traditional. Transitional style fuses a combination of modern and classic," says Hahn.

Photo: Nils Timm

Thank you to House of Rolison for this stunning peek! Here are some BEFORE photos - eek!

BEFORE
