Anyone else feel like detective shows are getting rather stale and predictable lately? I know I’m not the only one who’s getting tired of all the clichés when it comes to this well-worn TV genre, to the point where I almost want to turn my back entirely on any newly released crime fiction show. Yawn! All of it just feels so “been there, done that.”
So when I first heard about the newly released crime show, Code of Silence, my initial instinct was to roll my eyes. “Great,” I thought to myself. “Just what we need. Another run-of-the-mill crime drama.”
Yet it wasn’t until I actually sat down and read the series’ premise that I began to lean in and pay attention. All of a sudden, my initial misgivings about the ITVX series began to melt away. And when I saw its outstanding 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, I knew my instincts were completely wrong. Talk about a 5-star drama! After reading the plot summary alone, I was hooked. And when I finally sat down to watch all six episodes of the first installment, I could hardly contain my excitement at the announcement that the series on Britbox is already renewed for a second season.

What is Code of Silence About?

This detective series tells the unique story of Alison Woods, who works at the local police station. Yet instead of serving as a mastermind detective or chief of police like we’d expect from your standard run-of-the-mill crime drama, Alison works at the police station’s canteen. Instead of solving crimes, Alison solves how to get rid of the gross stains that clutter up the microwave. In other words, her life is just plain mundane. Although she’s a brilliant woman who would be perfectly fit for a more demanding career, Alison's faced with constant workplace discrimination due to the fact that she’s deaf. Her mother, who is also hearing impaired, has an equally difficult time landing stable work.
Yet everything changes when the police force realizes Alison has so much more to offer; as a deaf woman, she's able to lip-read, which serves as a highly valuable tool for a team trying to take down a gang of dangerous criminals. Will Alison’s disability actually serve as her greatest strength?
