What’s more difficult than solving complex crimes and taking down the biggest criminals in England? Working side-by-side with a detective who is your polar opposite, of course. Such is the case with Detective Tommy Lynley and Barbara Havers, who have absolutely nothing in common.

Not only are their personalities totally polarizing, but the two also come from starkly different backgrounds. While Barbara is working-class, Tommy was born into an aristocratic family.

Of course, Barbara can’t help but feel skeptical towards her partner’s decision to join the police force. If he’s so wealthy and well off, as she comments in the series trailer, why does he bother working with their team of investigators? Yet according to Tommy, despite his cushy lifestyle, he feels as though there’s something seriously missing in his life. That’s where his detective work comes in: “It gives me some sort of purpose I’ve never really had before,” he confesses to Barbara.

One might question the point of a new reboot series, since the books have already been adapted into a program on the BBC from 2001-2008. What’s notable is the fact that several more books in the detective series have been published since the TV series wrapped up in 2008. This will likely provide more depth to the characters, since there’s more content to work with.
