More Alexander Skarsgård? Yes please!
Apple TV's 'Murderbot' Season 2 Is The Quirky Sci-Fi 'Black Mirror' Fans Needed

Murderbot may seem strange to some — a robot programmed to kill that isn't all that murderous? — but I couldn't get enough of the Alexander Skarsgård-lead sci-fi on Apple TV+! The Big Little Lies actor not only gave a thrilling performance as the robot in question, but the story itself is a prescient adaptation that really speaks to how society and technology are so enmeshed.
Needless to say, there’s a whole lot left to unpack when it comes to the second season of the hit sci-fi program. With this in mind, here’s what you have to know about season 2!

What is 'Murderbot' about?
Does anyone else get that creeping feeling when they’re using ChatGPT that the AI service is a lot more capable and humanistic than it claims to be? While the system is quick to ease humans’ concerns by saying things like “I’m just a bot,” at times, a chilling sensation tells me that it’s a lot more powerful and advanced than we can ever imagine.
This is essentially the premise of Murderbot. This particular bot has managed to hack the feature within him that prevents his free will and independence. As a result, despite being treated like a robot, it secretly holds the ability to feel. These emotions come in the form of unexpected panic attacks, curiosity, and a thirst for soap opera-style dramatics. No, really. This bot is obsessed with soap operas, particularly fixating on a series called The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. While “Murderbot,” as it calls itself due to its ability to kill, is programmed for destruction and obedience, all it really wants to do is binge-watch its favorite soap (we love it for that).

Apple TV+
As someone who is used to seeing Alexander Skarsgård portray villainous roles (Succession, Big Little Lies), it’s nice to see him play a charmingly awkward sweetheart for once. Don’t let its nickname, Murderbot, fool you. It may be programmed to kill, but the truth is, it’s about as harmless as a kitten.
I found myself completely captivated by the storyline, which is based on the Victor Hugo Award-winning novels by Martha Wells. I love the unique premise as well, which is honestly so rare nowadays, what with all these live-action remakes and formulaic storylines. In turn, Murderbot felt like a breath of fresh air, exploring themes of free will, agency, individualism, and emotion.
Will there be a 'Murderbot' season 2?
Yes! Apple TV+ greenlit Murderbot for another season. In a joint statement, Chris and Paul Weitz said, "“We’re so grateful for the response that ‘Murderbot’ has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’ world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team."
What will 'Murderbot' season 2 be about?
For the second season of this sci-fi character-driven story, we’ll dive deeper into this bot’s complex well of emotions that will eventually bubble up to the surface, no matter how hard he tries to keep them at bay.
