The Celeb-Approved Way to Wear White + Black for Summer
Fashion trends come and go, but it’s hard to beat a tried and true classic. Sure, some celebs have zeroed in on tons of color and crazy style, like Zendaya mixing prints AND a dress in one outfit or blinging out their look with sequins. But lately, we’ve seen a return back to black and white — and there’s NOTHING boring about it. While the colors themselves are simple, the way they’ve been doing them has been anything but. Here are three slay-worthy examples.
1. Michelle Williams: She’s been relying on Louis Vuitton (she appears in their ads) lately, and this show stopper is a slight departure from the more complex looks she’s been rocking. It’s all in the simplicity: The cool, easy white dress is complemented by the black spaghetti straps and black strappy sandals. The ruching makes the petite star look taller, and the entire effect is very ‘90s. (Photo via Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty)
2. Jenna Ushkowitz: Everyone’s favorite Gleek has really stepped it up here with a great example of a demurely sexy dress: The cutout and slit are tasteful, while the pattern and color blocking are sophisticated. While her fashion risks have been commendable in the past, it’s really refreshing to see such an elegant, modern look on her. (Photo via Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty)
3. Cate Blanchett: Cate’s also on theme here. The parts of this dress shouldn’t all work as one — leather, sweatshirt material, draping, a bustier — but they somehow all come together for the sum to be greater than the whole of its parts. It’s classic Cate: Take something really daring and interesting and make it look effortless and even casual. (Photo via Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty)
