What is 'The Couple Next Door' about?

The Couple Next Door one burning question: Is monogamy enough? We’re talking long-term couples who’ve been together for years and years. While it’s true that many couples are able to successfully thrive in monogamous relationships and truly only have eyes for their significant other, a sizable number of couples struggle to stay faithful to their partners while in monogamous relationships. In many (but not all!) cases, the initial fireworks fizzle, and sometimes that romantic spark dies altogether.

When this happens, human nature often takes over, and it’s not uncommon for spouses to develop crushes on others outside of their relationships. But it’s the whole “wanting what you can’t have” aspect that can send those crushes into overdrive, which can sometimes lead to straight-up obsession. But what happens when you’re married, and the object of your obsession happens to be your next-door neighbor?

The anthology series follows these themes season-by-season, featuring new couples each time.

Season 1 starred Sam Heughan (Outlander) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark). It followed a young couple whose lives are turned upside down after they move next door to a traffic cop and a yoga instructor. At first, they’re eager to settle into their new community by befriending their neighbors. But what starts off as a warm housewarming friendship quickly turns into a twisted tale of temptation, betrayal, and shocking consequences.

There are currently two seasons of The Couple Next Door out! Both seasons explore the lives of two separate couples who engage in secret affairs with one another. I’ve always appreciated the more bleak portrayals of on-screen romances that aren’t always as warm and fuzzy as the Hallmark channel might lead us to believe.

Movies like 2004’s Closer, starring Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts, explore this exact theme of romantic portrayal. We’ve seen something similar as well on The White Lotus season 2. And while such themes of scandal and infidelity are heartbreaking in the real world, I find it fascinating to watch unfold on my TV screen. That’s exactly where The Couple Next Door comes in, to tell it like it is. Is it moral? No. But is it riveting television? You bet.

It was hard for the chaos of the first season to be matched, butThe Couple Next Door season 2 successfully managed to be somehow more binge-worthy and exciting than the first installment. The question is, will there be a third season of the riveting drama? This is the burning question fans are dying to know.
